Canadian Sellers on ebay have a new hurdle to go over. The Canadian ebay sellers tax effective on July 1st 2022.
Pursuant to the guidelines announced in Canada's 2021 Federal Budget and recent provincial sales tax amendments, eBay Canada Limited ("eBay") will be required to collect Canadian sales taxes (GST/HST/QST/PST) on applicable sales to Canada-based buyers.
Effective July 1, 2022, for all sales of tangible goods sold within Canada, eBay will be collecting the Canadian sales taxes (GST/HST/QST/ PST) from Canada-based buyers on behalf of Canada-based sellers (irrespective of registration status) and remitting the tax to the appropriate tax authorities.
For sellers not registered to collect tax with the CRA and provinces, there is no action necessary. You will begin to see sales taxes charged and collected by eBay on buyer purchases beginning in July. eBay collected taxes will also be displayed in your seller reporting as of that date.
For GST/HST and/or QST registered sellers, eBay will be appointed as a billing agent for collection and remittance of Canadian sales taxes where the sales tax laws do not automatically require it. As such, eBay will require completion of billing agent authorization forms. We are sending separate communications for GST/HST and QST-registered sellers with the billing agent election forms.
With this change in sales tax collection responsibilities, eBay aims to alleviate our sellers of the administrative burden to accurately charge and collect sales taxes on taxable sales made through the platform and comply with all applicable legislation. eBay is taking over this responsibility for all sellers - not just those that are not registered - in an effort to simplify the experience for our community. Any questions or concerns about tax collection will be handled by eBay Customer Service. You can also visit our Tax Information page here.
eBay will also be responsible for collection of the Canadian sales taxes on supplies to Canada-based buyers of digitally downloaded goods, including sales from non-Canadian sellers. eBay's User Agreement has been updated to implement these changes and provide for compliance with applicable laws.

This is one of the 2 reasons why I stopped selling on ebay (the other being not being able to use Paypal to get funds). The worst part is that a business or individual in Canada does not need to charge taxes if they do less than $30 000 of revenue.

This country is ridiculous. I’ve been looking into reselling as some side income because working 60 hrs a week isn’t enough and now I’m finding out about this. Between the inflated shipping here, taxes on taxes, fees, and just general higher prices on everything you better hope to source items for $5 and sell for $100 to make it worth while after your pie gets fingered by Turdo.

Yah..the tax is certainly questionable. Picked up a 20 year old used disc player and had to pay tax. I disagree with this law. Used items sold by private sellers should still be exempt. I have already withheld some buys unfortunately as a result.

Now even though the "ebay selling fee" is 9% for electronics if you have a store, instead of paying 90$ in fees making a net return of 910$ on ur laptop, you are paying 9% in fees on the whole 1,219$, which comes to 109.71$ in fees, giving you a net return 890.29$ instead now... thieves

our government has screwed us to the max with taxes, yet so many large corporations hide their monies in offshore accounts and pay little or no tax, and the CRA stated it's too hard to go after them for taxes but far easier to put the squeeze on average CDNS, as for free trade that was just a myth. As when a person buys a small 10-dollar item, with exchange and shipping fees to Canada often cost almost 50 bucks or more which is utterly ridiculous! Yet one spends 50 bucks or more from Amazon there's free shipping, but Jim Bezos owns amazon and has offshore accounts in those tax havens like Bermuda, US Virgin Islands other tax havens certainly not right or fair.

Sooo....Ebay collects taxes on behalf ofntye seller for an product that Ebay never owned......there must be a legal term for someone that does this. If Ebat charged a fee for their services and chsrged taxes on their service that would be understandable. Their interpertation of these new Canadian laws seems to be.....misinterpreted. That or federal governments are getting desperate to pay off debt. I saw somewhere that this new law was put in place to stop personal sales with mass items sales such as a store not having to charge and collect tax. Charging one person selling one used item and collellecting taxes when the seller is not a business and does not have a tax number......questionable.

I just pulled all my auction items. I sell and trade collectibles . Some items very low value but all in all a great way to network . An item i sold was Gst taxed 3.50 for 20.00 in value and shipping is 11.50. My "profit" which is zero as i paid full value plus tax originally and now see negative losses. Ebay allows small sellers to recoup value on used items. Now being "taxed" equals ebay accumulation of more funds at the sellers and buyers expenses used item which have been previously taxed should be exempt . But i just pulled 140 items off and cannot sell any longer on ebay. Basically the amount i sold will not even pay for my time, supplies, or energy. Its really unfortunate to the community.

we have become sheep to be fleeced by our corrupt government. Back in the day unions were started to protect the workers from the rich companies but the only time we CDN rose up was with a trucker convoy over the mandatory covid shots, when that happened the whole country should of rose up and then they would have taken notice and forced them to make changes to the laws and taxation. Even in ancient times Roman emperors kept the plebians occupied with free bread and circuses and knew when the mob rose up the emperor's head would roll. In India the farmers rose up against an unfair law and were shot at and beaten by the police and army and eventually the government did not implement that law only because of the mass of farmers fight back. Things like this has happened in other countries and we need to show the government we are not happy as most cannot even afford to live and future generations will be burden by excessive debt created by spend happy Trudeau.

Is ebay going to tell revenue Canada that I made $100? Or $83 after their fee? What a joke! And now buyers are discouraged by tax prices on everything, so harder to sell.
