Ok, "beat your mug" was a phrase back in the 90s. It means to put on makeup. I remember it because Sister Mary Clarence said it to Jennifer Love's character in Sister Act. Also, to "read someone to filth" is also an old phrase that got shorted. Still means the same thing.

Explanations for some of the slang: a lot of the third quiz was genz slang but i know it from gay slang more. as for beat: it comes from using a beauty blender (an egg shaped sponge) to apply foundation/other products. you have to repeatedly tap your face with it. doing so aggressively is "beating" your face. It can be used to describe the process of doing makeup: "She's beating her face" or to describe the finished product: "her beat is incredible" meaning her makeup is incredible. I personally have never heard wig used in a sentence. Its more of a response to something you find cool/incredible/really good. so to use it in conversation you just say "wig," when you're in awe of something read/reading comes from ballroom and drag culture i believe. explained in the documentary Paris is Burning, "you get in a smart crack and everyone laughs... because you've found a flaw and exaggerated it, then you've got a good read going." so while now it means an insult, it comes from playfully insulting your peers. what people really mean when they say read nowadays is more akin to shade. please don't quote me on this lol.

yeah queer black culture and ballroom especially is where the majority of slang comes from, it’s so weird that that’s not just widely known and accepted fact. not to shade anyone who hasn’t been exposed to it in that manner, but just that it’s an interesting phenomenon and it’s been going on since the beginning of ballroom

35:05 "Beat is defined as aggressively applying makeup to get a bold look" Seán has taught us "batin'" is Irish slang for "beating", so I wonder how the Irish gen Z is using that one ("I'm gonna give your face a right batin'; you'll look grand" 😂). Also, that term has been around since the 1970s (it became popular in drag culture).
@mind0fz
@mind0fz 4 ай бұрын
In the event that Sean or Ethan see this: "Beat" was originally a slang term in drag culture. Its a term because drag performers were trying to get makeup blended on their face so fast, that it was as if they were "beating" their faces. Because drag is much more popular in the mainstream, phrases like "beat", "wig", and "mug" have entered the gen Z language

Bonus fact: the "y" letter in things like "ye olde" is not pronounced as a y, it is actually pronounced as a "th" sound, as it is a replacement for "thorn" letter (þ) which used to be the letter used for "th" sounds Another example: Yat man over yere uuas eating a yick slice of cheese!

Or a lighthearted way to call someone dumb - pelotudo/a (peh low to doe/duh): stupid or dumbass - bombilla (bome bee sha): a specific straw used for drinking tea as it has a filter at the bottom - mate (maw tei): a specific cup or mug for a specific tea drink - Yerba [mate] (sher baw): a milled or ground herb native to South America used for tea, usually energizing Chile - wea (weh uh): noun; thing, thought, situation, topic etc - weon (weh onne): dude or bro (masculine) - weona (weh o nuh) dude or bro (feminine) There’s endless more, these are just a few off the top of my head. Yes, that was a callout to chile, sorry Chile. Y si gustan ver mis credenciales pos… no se que decirte xd

Today, I learned that most Gen z slang is just Simlish.
@rosebrown6381
@rosebrown6381 4 ай бұрын
SImlish is actually a fully translatable language at this point. Not sure about some of the slang still, lol. But as an 'Elder Millennial/ Gen Y' (look up the years for Gen Y and you'll see we get thrown back and forth with Gen X and Millennials all the time, but since I'm on the younger end of Gen Y, I end up in with the Millennials more ), I grew up with so many different kinds of slang, it's ridiculous. I heard 80's slang, retro 60's and 70's slang (my parents watched old TV shows a LOT), 90's slang, and I LIVE on the web, so everything since 2000 has been in my awareness at least to some degree as well - I'm disabled, but was a computer tech before that, so being online all the time was/ is all my social life. Keeps me fairly enmeshed in meme culture, lol.

i'd like to see you guys do this again but with uk gen z slang, since this one was mostly american gen z slang and just do more stuff about slang in general. also, i'd say that scotland also has different sets of slang in different cities, towns and neighbourhoods because of Gaelic and Scots :) like in dundee the word ken is used very frequently but over in inverness for example, they just say know. ik that in inverness, rougher neighbourhoods use the slang ay, (eg, "ay he said that!") and in nicer ones they don't

We used 'Zeitgeist' in music college when talking about artists who reflected the time in their music... it is effectively German for 'Spirit of the Time' or 'Time Ghost' ('zest' = Time, 'geist' = spirit/ghost)
