Жыл бұрынIn this video we take a look back at some of the most insane guitar licks from popular instructional videos.
If you have been learning to play the guitar at any point over the last 30-40 years you will have no doubt came across a number of these instructional videos from famous guitar players, mainly from the REH video group.
Some of the guitar playing on display in these videos is jaw-dropping and while pretty impractical if you are just starting to learn, they show off the skill of the some of the shredders that were around in the 80s, 90s and beyond.

Yeah kind of a weird choice to put him as the very first on the list: No disrespect to anybody else most people will never be able to play well, any of this. And maybe Paul Gilbert or Alan Holsworth have (had) the same kind of freakisly large hands and reach but not at the speed Shawn was playing.

They were actually rather small with short and stubby fingers, something he shared with other famous guitarists like Angus Young, Phil Keaggy, Andres Segovia, Steve Lukather and, last but not least, the great Danny Gatton, who had more virtuosity, improvisational talent and good taste in his little finger than Shawn Lane or anyone else in this video, even with a towel wrapped around it: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oqh3lNF228urhpc.html This is, of course, my very personal opinion, but it is one I share with the likes of Steve Vai, no slouch himself, who said: "Danny Gatton comes closer than anyone else to being the best guitar player that ever lived."

@@ArkyMalarkey Danny Gatton doesn't even come close to Allan's musical knowledge, or Shawn's incredible technique or feel. Danny Gatton, Truth be told looks like a standard blues player who just relies on flashy theatrics. Gatton's an amazing player, I love his stuff, but to say his note choice, phrasing or virtuosity is better than Allan's or Shawn's? Yeah... right. Snap back to reality.

Paul Gilbert was the most helpful for me. I learned more about shredding and how to build speed and technique from his video than I had in 10 years of playing. Shawn Lane was in his own league. All I learned from him was that I'll never play like that. Allan's brain was the most incredible facet of his playing. There will never be another like him.

yeah, but would you even WANT to play like that? Nobody ever heard of him, other than a few guitar players around the world. Much in the way you and i have our own licks that sound very impressive, we both know that some of it is smoke and mirrors and most average guitar players could play those lixx pretty easily with a few hours practice. This should be a good lesson for you. The guy can probably play ANYTHING or at least A LOT of things other people cant, and thats what he is renound for basically, but yet he is in capable of playing the notes that would allow him to support himself financially as a guitar player. There is no sound more dead than shred guitar.

Nothing really wows me these days on guitar. I certainly enjoy the great players and get cool ideas from them, but when I just watched Shawn I literally was throwing my hands up and saying "what the fuck?". It's just different.

People talking about musicality forgeting these are just examples lol. No one wants to see a shred demon teaching pretty melodies and no one wants to see Mr soul teaching chainsaw shred. They are playing what people wanted to learn from them most, simple.

I've always found Reb's style super melodic and catchy, which I love. He's got crazy speed, but it generally still sounds very musical.

Shawn and Allan are awesome. Their playing is so dreamy and otherworldly. Heady stuff. Meanwhile I’m not even beginning to understand what Steve Morse is doing. It’s cool stuff though.

I'm not sure if it was REH but John Petrucci's rock discipline was definitely the most useful as to actually getting better. Same for the Paul Gilbert stuff. Vinnie Moore had a good one too, very clean playing with minimal delay/distortion.

The only (almost) impossible licks are Shawn Lane's. From all the guitar players I have seen, maybe only one guy named Roy Marchback is able to play these kind of licks at such speeds.

Holy shit this channel is a goldmine, i absolutely suck at guitar but i grew up with these videos as a young metalhead in the early 2000s. I love every second of this. PD: Allan Holdsworth is just from another dimension. Dude's playing was insane.

I grew up in the 80’s when these were first coming out. I would borrow some of these on VHS from my local library because I couldn’t afford to buy them, lol! But I did have bootlegs of the “Star Licks” lick tape cassettes of Randy Rhoads and Yngwie Malmsteen. I did actually by a lick tape from the METAL METHOD lesson series from Doug Marks. This video brings back memories! Thanks for posting this!

Incredible and untouchable masters of the shred lead guitar. Just amazing. I’m content with the knowledge that I’ll never be able to play like them. But that said, there’s only one solo on this video that is in any way memorable or melodic and that’s Reb Beach’s. I know that’s just on this sample of licks, but it does provide a lesson there…The solos we remember (even shred ones) are the ones we can sing. Maybe that’s why you find Satriani, Vai, Gilbert, Kozen, and others coming back to more melodic and often bluesy solos on their latest tunes.

I have almost all of the REH and Hot Licks releases on VHS. Each has its place in my heart. The Steve Lukather one is great, as are the Vinnie Moore and Steve Morse tapes. But Shawn's is the only tape that I just switched my amp off and watched. I was never gonna do that.

Looking back, it's actually great to see these videos and know that what you see is what you hear - these days it's impossible to know if what you're hearing on a video is actually real. That said, there's a big difference between Allan and the other chaps here. As good as they were, they were indeed playing licks - stuff that they had worked out in advance. Allan didn't play licks - he improvised all that stuff on the spot.

What do you mean it's hard to tell if it's hard to tell if it's real these days? Do your eyes not work? Even amateur guitarist can spot a fake guitarist nobody is out there pretending to shred much less pretending to make tutorial videos if that's what you're saying.

@@preston2636"shredders" these days use all kinds of studio tricks and spend hours doing hundreds of takes trying to nail it, particularly those players who you see on instagram or shorts where these older school players tended to just go off the cuff, and you can tell- it sounds a LOT more natural and human, as inhuman as some of their technique seems

@@zolarczakl6815 Today's players are amazing, and you don't have to be so condescending towards them because you think they can't play off the cuff like guitarists in the past. They can, but they also have to navigate a very different environment. A perfectionist environment created by social media. There is also a lot of money in social media and in order to get noticed in a ocean of players you have to strive for those perfect takes. Call it inhuman if you like, but they are actually very talented people playing. And they put in thousands of hours of practice. If a studio version of a song sounds too fixed up, go watch live performances and judge them on how well they play it live instead of assuming they can't just because they are a modern player.

@@MikaelLV There are some amazing players today for sure, but the vast majority of players these days are bedroom warriors who don't know how to play with other people and who portray themselves in a certain way, doing it for clout and to flex on social media for follows and likes and that crap. I definitely agree that the root cause is social media, it's causing a kind of pathology in most people, not just guitarists, to strive for the appearance of perfection and to appear outstanding and exceptional, which causes a complete shift of what is important as a musician. I've tried jamming with so many "amazing" guitarists who have impressive looking instagram pages who don't understand some very fundamental shit. They can do certain things they've spent hundreds of hours practicing great, but so much effort is put towards being able to show off instead of being a well rounded musician. It was definitely the case in the past, but it's a problem that is getting much worse.

Shawn lane perfected efficiency of motion. Allan holdsworth introduced sounds we never heard before. Paul Gilbert showed anything was possible with alternate picking. Reb Beach was just a cool MFer with killer licks and phrasing, heading for a heartbreak with them seventeen year olds.

I had just about all those old instructional vids. Learned a few techniques from each one, but spent the most time on the vids from Greg howe, Steve morse, and Frank gambale's chopbuilder....made me an exponentially better player. A few vids were so advanced, they were just a demo...like Shawn Lane's.

All of them are beasts. My personal favorites are Kotzen and Morse, Kotzen because of his amazing overall musicianship and Morse for his melodic versatility and technical finesse demonstrated on both electric and classical guitar. That said, Lane and Holdsworth are in league of their own, even in this mighty company.

They are all amazing, but for me, the most tasteful player out of the bunch was Reb Beach...that ballady solo was just perfection! And Richie Kotzen of course...knowing what he became all these years later; a master songwriter, singer and player.

I remember the Brett Garsed, Joe Diorio, Greg Howe, Tony MacAlpine, Kee Marcelo, Jason Becker and Frank Gambale have some serious chops too. You might be interested to check a French one : Patrick Rondat "Virtusosité et vélocité à la guitare" Oh... and also the one where Steve Morse demonstrates _2manyNotes_ Can't remember whether it's Power Lines or Highlights...

Growing up watching these type of instruction video tapes, I always felt like a hack on the guitar. Then I realized that if I wrote solos like people sing, I could create my own thing. I could still throw in a blazing fast run to show off, but people remember the more melodic part of a solo than the brain melting fast notes. CC Deville has more in common with Kurt Cobain than people realize. You can sing the solo to “…Teen Spirit” just as you can to “Every Rose…”

Shawn Lane was really good at doing what you explained. He blazes through these examples here (it is just an instructional video) and then can record songs like Illusions with an acoustic and little to no shred, perfect all rounder. Yes its true that SOME people remember melodic moments better, but face melters will inspire you to become more technically proficient - i dont think people liked EVH for his melodies, it was his innovative techniques.

@@uraniumcranium2613 well I’m not even a pimple on Shawn’s ass when it comes to neck knowledge at hyper velocity, the brain to fingers thing. So that’s why I always felt like a guitar hack to all of these guys. I couldn’t innovate out of a wet paper bag. But, I did have an ear, and I could read people’s reactions to things that emotionally moved them. So I focused more on that way of playing so that I had a chance of succeeding. Doesn’t always mean that I did succeed, but at least had a chance. And of course, I had to throw a EVH harmonic horse whining Floyd fun trick every once in a while to show that I wasn’t a grunge player😂.

Reb Beach was my fave - by far! [ With the possible exception of Yngwie and Gilbert. But they are npt new to me.. ] And it seems I'm not alone, as his spot is the "most replayed" part of the video. His was actually the most subdued of all the all shredders...but he had such supreme control. And that cones out in every bend and nuance. Contrasted by Richie Kotzen , who (well, firstly, I didn't even know he could shred like that ), but...was kinda sloppy in his technique. Next to Reb, anyway. Also, the double hand tap technique - not just for the fast passages, but right throughout, the melodic parts too, really create a unique sound. It gives the sonic impression that he is flying free from "boxes".

The pain of only being able to rent these overnight as a teen was real ! You could only learn so much then you would either pay the late fees or go back and rent it again! If I wanted to buy them they were like 60 bucks a video and I had no money at that age.

Reb Beach sounds great , uses the tap more than most. Morse is all about strict Alternate picking . Lane I always dig his 2 notes per string patterns of 4 5 6 and 7

@@facemelters I am going to look for an Mp3 of that, I have seen Reb with Dokken on the first tour he did with them , I did not recognize him , I remember he completely shredded on every song as if he did not acknowledge the album recordings, then the next leg of the tour we saw them again and he was playing all Lynch's melodies . Monster player
