The shot when Legolas slides down the stairs was actually the actor going down the stairs connected to a string and with the shield strapped to his feet like a snowboard. You should really see the behind the scenes from shooting this masterpiece of a trilogy, its amazing seing the effort and practical effects going into this 😊🎞

The bows used on LOTR during principle photography weren't PVC with sculpted bits added on top, they were high-density rubber bows molded off of fully sculpted masters. So not THAT functionally different from a PVC bow, but molded and cast instead of heat-shaped and built up with additive processes. They were around 10 lbs draw weight.

This is the same for X Wing fighters in Star Wars. In space things don't bank and turn. They rotate and thrust ... Same for guns. Bullets don't act right in movies and guns often don't recoil ... Archery is just the latest thing to get added to the list 🙃

the bows being held at full draw by elves could be explained in universe by their strength being almost supernatural , the humans have no such excuse. there are other feats of archery that can be explained by the mechanics of fantasy . great video , love lotr and archery so great seeing both topics merged by a great creator

Thx, for the video ❤One more thing, 07:07 He is aiming straight between Gimli's legs (look at the angle of the arrow and where his eyes look) with overgrip (or whatever we call it in English), one finger over the arrow. Archers, who is reading this, how do you think where the arrow will actually go? 🤣 R.I.P. P.s. Yeah, yeah, MB he knocked arrow much higher, but look at the wrapping. I don't think so :)

As far as I remember the information about elves from the book, they were exceptionally strong and resilient compared to humans, despite their delicate appearance. Attention was drawn to the fact that Legolas's bowstring strength allowed him to effectively strike enemies, but precisely because of this superhuman strength, he could draw it effortlessly.

Watch Lars Andersen and the truth shall set you free. Also keep in mind that elves are featherweights. This is conveyed in one of the scenes where his companions are struggling to walk thru deep snow and he is walking on top the snow effortlessly.

You can't make real world truths out of the abilities of those few amongst us who are basically superhuman in their field.

i recollect when i first learned to throw arrows using the modern centre shot bows and the debate at that time concerning the claim found in an old manuscript that in order for a medieval archer to qualify as an archer in the saracen army he had to be capable of throwing three arrows in one and a half seconds, it was believed by most modern archers to have been wartime propaganda deliberately dropped to frighten their enemies. and then Lars Anderson did it. modern archers then stated that it was only possible for Lars to do that because, as a 'trick shooter' using very light poundage bows it would be impossible to be done with an actual warbow at sixty pounds or above. and then somebody else did it. when i then went on to learn about and practice medieval Arabic archery techniques i was unsurprised to find the claim about the english longbowmen were not the best archers of the time and neither was the english longbow the best recurve bow at the time, it turned out that both of those accolades belong to the ottoman archers. so now i practice the techniques they mastered back then. so sure enough the ottoman claims i have proven True from i own personal experience. having said that, i noticed one error in Legolas's technique from the film whilst watching your video. when throwing arrows with a bow the Mediterranean draw is only good for throwing from the knuckle side of the bowhand, throwing from the thumb side requires either slavic or thumb draw, as a rule that is there is another technique which is kind of a mix of both the name of which i forget just now. otherwise for moving or bouncing shots, for instance, well that's just every day for horseback archers today in competition.

This was awesome, don't feel bad, all of us who have 'a set of very specific skills' (or whatever the phrase is) get sorta bent out of shape over realism. just ask a smith about scenes where weapons are forged if you want to see REAL indignation, as its always utter bullshit in Hollywood. I would like to make a request: Can you do a video on 'archery for dwarves and giants'? I am 6'5" and have freakishly long arms for my height, and I have found it very difficult to find equipment to fit. Obviously there are ways to deal with this, preferably ones that don't involve beginner bows custom made for 3000$, but its all rather intimidating to figure out. My interests lie in roving and probably small game hunting....

@vicroc4 2 ай бұрын
#2 is much the same reason Hollywood tends to use fake guns and then edit in the muzzle blast in post. So they don't end up with an Alex Baldwin/Rust situation. If anything, they do firearms worse than archery, because at least the bows actually move in these archery scenes, but they forget that self-loading firearms have an action that moves after the shot and don't make any accommodation for that.

People who know the stuff and find these quirks unrealistic enough to pull them out of the immersion care. What you're championing is apathy, that, because it is entertainment, it's okay to cut corners because no one cares. But they do, and so we cannot cut corners if we want them to be immersed in our worlds.
