Impostor syndrome (also known as impostor phenomenon, impostorism, fraud syndrome or the impostor experience) is a psychological pattern in which an individual doubts their skills, talents, or accomplishments and has a persistent internalized fear of being exposed as a "fraud".[1] Despite external evidence of their competence, those experiencing this phenomenon remain convinced that they are frauds and do not deserve all they have achieved. Individuals with impostorism incorrectly attribute their success to luck, or interpret it as a result of deceiving others into thinking they are more intelligent than they perceive themselves to be.[2] Impostor syndrome also occurs in normal human-to-human relationships. Based on this syndrome, continuing doubts about people and individual defense mechanisms are considered difficult to achieve healthy relationships.[3] While early research focused on the prevalence among high-achieving women, impostor syndrome has been recognized to affect both men and women equally.[1][4]
Impostor syndrome also occurs in the context of mental illness and its treatment. Certain individuals may see themselves as less ill (less depressed, less anxious) than their peers or other mentally ill people, citing their lack of severe symptoms as the indication of no or a minor underlying issue. People with this form do not seek help for their issues, seeing their problems as not worthy of psychiatric attention.[5][6] What this means in this context is that a person might feel like an impostor when seeking help for problems they face, in relation to other, more severe possible cases where one might feel compelled to seek help.

The weird thing is, is that when I first heard about this syndrome, something inside me said "You felt this way before." But my imposter syndrome is.. not success. It's an unusual situation. It's more of notoriety. I do something well, and have amassed many followers, yet it's not because of my success. It's been extremely difficult in how to actually measure this success, because it's not about me, or the followers. It's a very fine line, and something I truly have, and continue to struggle with. It's been a very unusual situation I'm in.

It was always hard for me to accept compliments because I always felt like people only compliment me to make me feel better or because it felt like my success was only luck. I studied hard during the last weeks for a special course in my field of work - but not my exact field (I will need it in the future). Exams were today. I succeeded and was almost proposed to be a future instructor. I didn't even know that this could be an option. I really felt joy and pride about my result (which happens very seldom). Then, I told my boyfriend that I did quite good and was almost recommended to be an instructor. I also said that it's a bit strange because it's not my exact field of work so far. He, who never struggles to feel good about himself ("I feel so fit, it is so easy to get up that hill, I'm so good at what I'm doing" etc.), said: "well, that's only, because it's so difficult to find people who want to be instructors on these courses". :( :( This little sensation of pride of myself just went "puff"... 😢😞

Well done you on doing so well and studying hard to achieve it 😊🙏 that's amazing that thought you had instructor quality.. says a lot of how you expressed yourself in interest in course content , participation and quite obviously, in a personality for people you might not realise you even have. Gi look in the mirror right now and every morning you wake up and say the words.. " I am amazing.. I am enough.. I will believe in myself more" ❤. I am proud of you and I hope YOU are proud of you. Learning and achieving success is so very difficult when you have such a negative self believe. I know too well. Go get um tiger ❤🙏😊

@@beautifultrauma3148 Thank you so much for your kind words 🥰 A friend of mine once said "it's hard to listen to you speaking to yourself, as you're talking so badly about yourself." I will try to repeat your mantra. I want to be able to say this to myself without feeling like this was a lie. Just to be enough for myself would be great :) like a little peace in myself. I hope you're doing great! Someone who can give such kind words and nice advice to other people, must be an empathetic person and can be very proud of himself :) thank you 🙏

I am definitely a soloist and, as an immigrant, I feel inadequate in the most basic things. Permanently in the wrong place and like I'm just waiting for everything to implode. I wish I knew ways to combat this beyond just identifying it

bro Ur fine dw , you can say it is a syndrome but it's Not an illness , just don't say it's the reason of any of your action . I was that dude who says that he has a lot of mental problems , everyone seemed to be nice with me but when I got better they never treated me like normal, i lost my gf and my family respect because they think I am weak

The people that i hate the most, are the people who try to make you feel as an "impostor" i had a teacher who would constantly make fun of your mistakes and outright say: "you don't belong here!"

Impostor syndrome can be deeply distressing, often fueled by negative experiences like being criticized or belittled by others, such as a teacher who undermines your confidence. It can make you feel like you don't belong or aren't worthy of your achievements. Overcoming it involves recognizing your worth, seeking supportive environments, and challenging those negative internal and external voices. Remember, your value isn't defined by others' perceptions.

Imposter syndrome is not the same as depression, though they can be related. Imposter syndrome involves feelings of self-doubt and the belief that one's success is undeserved, often accompanied by fear of being exposed as a "fraud." While it can contribute to stress and anxiety, it isn't a clinical diagnosis like depression, which is a mood disorder with more pervasive symptoms.
