Thanks Jordan, I'm a 2 year+ piano student and I'm learning/practicing scales, chords, arpeggios and Hanons 1-4 but that's all paying off. It was getting tough to keep at the practice but since I started this improve it shows me how much I've learned so far and it's fun improvising.

I've been playing almost as many weeks as I've got fingers on a hand. And this was a nice simple lesson that worked for me right away. Merci beaucoup.

What a pleasure it is to hear you talking about intervals. It took me years to work out that the whole of Western music is based on intervals of the Chromatic scale. Even great Jazz books that start with intervals forget to say WHY. Once I had worked out that all chords and scales exist independently as a set of intervals, and that is why it is so important to specify the quality, life became so much easier. Minor 7 is 3 4 3 Major 7 is 4 3 3 Minor maj 7 is 3 4 4 etc.. 9 11 & 13 just continue the pattern . Plus of course the Circle of Fifths instantly gives you the sharps and flats, no worrying did I memorise that scale correctly.

I think this is a great lesson. This is the kind of approach that I was hoping my targeted piano teacher would begin to work with me on. That did not happen. I am happy that I came upon this piece on your site. I have noticed that Lisa was talking about this sort of concept with her lesson on 3 and 4 note melodies with chords. I remember her saying "you can go anywhere" with the sequences and creations. Shuffling the melody notes around as well as the chords can be a lot of fun and gets the person to really think for themselves. I believe that not worrying about how things might sound while experimenting is probably key. That opens up a lot of possibilities. This type of approach is the total opposite and much more free than what I had been seeing in the Alberts book series of learning and much much better. For me, anyway. Thanks! :)

I have alot of ideas for short phrases but i have a very hard time putting the ideas to a piano and not have it sound horrible, i hope this helps

The funny thing is I learned to improv by accident. I’d get board of practicing so I constantly all day every day while practicing would just start messing around improvising when I was board and I got pretty good at it and I’m comfortable making stuff up while playing for people now. This video is Taylor’s much more to beginners then I needed but I think a good tip I’m simply just try it and learning along the way

There are a few ideas for how to learn piano Try practicing about 1 hour every day, or even 1/2 an hour if you can't find time. Do extra practice whenever you can. For example, on weekends you can do more than an hour, maybe two or 3, or even more. (I read about these and more on Denelle piano lesson site )

Something that I don't understand.... In order to determine the minor triad chords (as per the Alfred's Basic Piano Library - The Complete book of Scales, Chords, Arpeggios & Cadences book), the minor key uses the Harmonic Minor scale which sharpens the 7th note (G) which in turn makes the V chord major. Yet in the video, the artist identifies (and plays) the V chord as a minor chord, flattening the G. Why is that?

Great video but wish you would explain what you are doing in your left hand. You say there are no rules but don't you have to stay on beat. Love to know your secret for doing so while improvising.

This sounds really good. I can see why you started with the A minor chord as it has no sharps or flats and is simpler, but then I was a bit lost about why the next two chords were chosen. Could you explain? I am mostly concerned that I could not duplicate this chord progression if the starting key is different from A minor.

I don’t recommend this for beginner. Maybe for those who are about to graduate, being a beginner I mean. Instead go to Lisa Witt’s video and check it out, her’s is “feasible” for you.

Unfortunately piano improv is not taught by Pianote. I asked. And there isn't much instruction from Mr. Leibel either. Nice video here however.
