Here’s a clip taken from the premium critique of the drawing basics course. The assignment was to simplify a pear or a portrait down to its shapes, values, and edges. In this critique, I break down some of the common issues I saw students have with their shape design. I’ll give you advice and talk about proportion, asymmetry, and improving your shadow shape design. If you enjoy this critique and would like more be sure to check out the full course - proko.com/drawing .

Thanks Stan - you really help me remember my fundamentals well. Remembering how spectrums work (EG that shadow tones, even in light areas, are always darker than halftones) is reaaaaally useful - even as I get deeper as a journeyman artist, the fundamentals, like unity, which you bring up, are so critical, most of the things you have to remember are just applications of the fundamentals, not even advanced things, just extremely solid application of the basics. Thank you again!

Hello, I love you premium courses, I comeacross the idea of two or more stage workflow, when you do rough sketch and then go over it with clean lines on another page. I d just like to ask, if you have ever done anything like that in tratidional drawings, or if it is quite useless in your opinion. Thank you and thank you for your work 👌😊

What exercises are good for controlling texture? I definitely also draw backgrounds like the one in the video, how to make them more even?
@ProkoTV
@ProkoTV Ай бұрын
Start by getting familiar with different parts of your pencil. Use the tip for fine, detailed lines and the side for broader strokes. Try out shading large areas and creating smooth transitions from dark to light. Notice how the texture of the paper impacts your shading. Use techniques like "island hunting" to spot and balance areas that are too light or too dark. These practices will help you get better control of your medium and achieve more consistent textures in your drawings.

Critiques are good, but Stan, come on man, be serious, you gotta teach people how to tackle their own mistakes, not just point out, teach them to measure in the most basic side, this studen clearly has not a very well trained eye-to-paper drawing transfer ratio, suggest some excercises to improve accuracy, how to measure and all that stuf, it's easy to mark out the overall shape in the original picture, but the hard part is to transfer the whole drawing into a paper
@FantasticOtto
@FantasticOtto Жыл бұрын
After a number criticisms (educational and constructive), we arrive at complimenting the student: You followed the instructions.. This is not a bad piece for a beginner. I’m sure you could find positives in the drawing that the student could take inspiration from and build upon. Yet your review of this work doesn’t really indicate that there was anything done right. A major part of teaching is to inspire the student to keep learning. And I don’t feel this was done here, despite very sound advice on how to fix errors that undoubtedly will improve the artist’s abilities.
@user-vg1yh1nj6o
@user-vg1yh1nj6o Жыл бұрын
I think he did a good job and reassured the student throughout the video. He never crossed the line with his critique or insulted the drawing. Honestly, you should realise your mistakes and learn how to improve your skill, and complimenting a piece just for the sake of it won't help. That is the reality of nearly every skill you learn, to accept the critique and keep going, and if the student is that fragile thеn they have a problem with self-esteem and need to work on that too.

@@user-vg1yh1nj6o I never said he crossed any lines, and never insinuated that he should compliment for the sake of complimenting. But there are definite positive qualities of the drawing that are not touched on. Again, encouraging what works is an essential part of feedback in addition to constructive criticism of what doesn’t. I felt there was almost none of that.
