I pulled up a few old drawings and did as you suggested. I ended up with a new and better drawing. I’m trying to figure out how I often overlook things like this. I’m glad I ran across your video to remind me. Thanks ❤️

This was very very helpful. I've seen other teachers talk about the value range, but watching you adjust a drawing was the part that really stood out to me. I'm working my way through all your videos. Thanks for such quality content!

It is amazing to think that everything is darker than we think. Even if you look at black and white images you will see that the best ones have stronger dark tones in certain areas. Nice tutorial.

Thank you very much. Particularly on portraits, I have a hard time pushing the contrast, but I take your advice and will deepen shadows.

Thank you so very much! I am a self taught artist. Over the last 50+ years I’ve collected hundreds of books to help me with this endeavor. I’ve noticed that a very limited amount of these books briefly touch the subject value sketching, with barely a page or two on this important subject. And to my disappointment even fewer delving into the subject of composition! It’s a small wonder anyone can successfully do a good sketch nor execute a painting! Anyone one can draw what they see if they are very observant and diligent in their pursuit of what they are passionate about. That being said how can they be create expressive work without the proper knowledge? Not all of us have the opportunity, time or money to attend art school. I can only speak for myself with the lifelong stumbling blocks and family obligations that had kept me from going to art school but, I’m sure there are and will always be others like me. I will continue gather the crumbs offered in a few books, videos and blogs on this subject.

This underlines what I once read in a book on drawing horses, that the biggest mistake folks make is not making darks dark enough but I guess it applies to all subjects.

I don't know if you'll see this the video is older and I just found you. Love your videos they're very helpful. Do you have any suggestions for getting past the "fear of the dark"? I find myself afraid I'll go too dark and end up being too light and afraid to try to fix it

what would you recomend when getting stuck and unable to identify how strong of a value to place in areas. i've heard squinting is a good technique or looking slightly away from the area. great video.

A good idea might be to find a value chart print it and hold it up to the photograph to see where the value falls and then up to your drawing and see how close they are.

I really enjoyed this! Would you please bring up how to create values within a black object, I am trying to use my cows as model subjects but it is just too hard of a leap just because they are black, and because of that I feel like I am not learning. If you prefer explaining with a black jacket or something that is fine, but I would highly appreciate help in black values.

A shadow is NEVER truly black it is always transparent to one point or other, but I understand what you are doing. I use the Carravagio dramatic type lighting on all my drawings, but I find that I can't find dark enough pencils/graphite to get the darkness I need usually resulting in...faded looking finished work
