I ride with my wife once a week, it's a precious ride, it may be slow but I love that we get to do it together. If you choose to ride with a slower person, stay patient and be there for them. Thanks RoxyRocks!!

Thanks for articulating a point I've been trying to get across to a few folks. Slower riders will often apologize on a group ride for slowing faster riders down. I have ridden with less skilled riders than myself and even after reassuring them I'm fine with the pace, they feel like they're holding me back. I've been on both sides of this. I kind of get it, but if I've volunteered to ride with you, I'd rather have your company, than rip the trail as fast as I can. I'll save that for race days. Everything you mentioned is awesome. Slowing down has helped improve my own skill level.

Great tips! I sometimes ride with my wife, who rides slower than me, so thank you for the ideas. I sometimes go at my own pace for a mile or so, and then go back until I meet up with my wife again. That way, I can put more miles, and riding the same trail backwards looks totally different 👍

I love your whole approach to riding, Roxy. You’re such a joy and a credit to the community! What a treasure. Keep being awesome, ma’am! Also, what you said in this one reminds me of what one of my military friends at work always says. “Slow is smooth, smooth is fast.” And it’s true. As a new rider, it is so much easier for me to ride faster than it is to ride slower. Slow is _hard!_ Whenever I want to improve at something, I try to do it as slow as I can, and when I’m on my bike, that’s when I see just how little skill I really have. When I’m ripping it down a hill, it seems fun and everything seems fine, but if I mess up even just a little bit it puts the fear of god in me because I just found out how far outside of my skill level I’ve just ridden. It’s very important not to skip the slow things. I should know this from practicing tai chi, too. That seems like it would be very easy when you see someone do it because it’s such a slow pace, but when you really study it and learn under someone who really knows it well, you start to understand how complex and difficult it is, and you start to really value how slow you do it most of the time. It lets you really focus and build skill for when it’s time to do it faster or at full speed.

THANK you for this deep comment 😊😍 I agree on SO many levels!! There are so many parallels to tai chi and martial arts, in fact the skills algorithm that I share on my channel applies to learning any motor skill - just that many people ignore it and skip the fundamentals 🙂 Exactly because it’s more fun to rip it and because newer bikes are so forgiving. I agree - slow is often harder, BUT it also allows us to work on the errors we’re actually just MASKING when we ride fast 😊 When I train pros, that’s precisely what we do - slow it down to refine! Thanks for being here and sharing!

I started making videos this way. I can ride ahead and while I’m waiting for my girlfriend to catch up, I can set up a cool shot or hit a feature a few times. When I was a kid, my friends and I would have slow races on our BMX bikes. Last person across the finish line with no dabs, wins. :)
