After a near disaster with a smoldering ember and too much saw dust I upgraded my dust collection on my Laguna F2 saw.

Thanks for reminding us all of the importance in regular tool maintenance. I have the Laguna F2 as well, and luckily mine still looks like brand new inside and out. My routine is to completely clean my shop, maintain my tools, and sharpen blades between each project. It’s something I’ve done for years, and it makes quite the difference. Thanks for sharing your experience, and how you went about fixing it. ☮️

F1 owner here. Shop equipped with small dust collection system. The interior hose on the saw and the port restriction were removed. Still mediocre dust control. I finally removed the shroud from around the blade and collection is much improved. The shroud was redirecting dust out the top due to airflow not reaching the blade.

I clicked the video back and forth to see that glamour before/after shot of the tabletop. So shiny and new at the end! Tool maintenance is always one of those things that I put off, then when I do it, think "Why didn't I do this sooner".

I like your idea of moving the 2.5” hose to its own port. After seeing this, I’m planning on doing the same. I don’t think your current setup is moving any additional air through your saw though. You have a 4x4x2.5 wye, so your cfm will still max out at the area of a 4” port. I think it would work way better if you ran a 5” (or 6” if you can) hose from your collector and split that at the saw. Thanks for the idea.

Wow, this is a cautionary tale to keep a cleaning schedule without any exceptions to the rule. Thanks for sharing

Wow Mark... Good Job on the restoration and improvements. This could have happened to anyone. Just the other day I found that my Dewalt DWE7491 (job site table saw) that I built a nice metal frame bench around... had a thin (wide) trim strip wedge into it's exhaust port (almost 2.5 inches) and my blade well was totally stopped up and full of saw dust. The dust was so bad that it was starting to kick back out of the clearance insert, which is what alerted me that I had a problem. I had disconnected my dust collection shop vac because I using it on another project and I didn't realize that she wasn't evacuating the dust properly, so again... this could happen to anyone. Thanks for this video, as you have motivated me to get serious about plumbing the 2 hp Shop-Fox dust collector unit that has been sitting in the corner for 2 years because I keep "making other things a priority" !! Again... Thanks for the share and Be Blessed. You may have saved me from the same situation... much appreciated.

Sometimes we get so focused on our projects that we neglect the maintenance and care of the shop and tools. Good reminders for us all.

Hey Mark - Glad it didn't get worse. The KZfaq pundits say never to sand the saw top, but when my big cabinet saw emerged from 2 yrs storage as a rusty mess, the sander (plus Scotchbrite pads) brought it back to some semblance of clean. As you have shown, you gotta do what works!

Yeah, I saw and read about not using the power sander. I tried to avoid it, but I needed more power! :) Hopefully, I won't see long-term damage/more rust from doing that.

Nice upgrade. What wold you think about leaving the 2 1/2 hose in original place and block off the 4: port. Then add a 4" port down lower to keep the level of dust inside lower?

Hello Mark, any update on the usefulness of these upgrades? I recently purchased this saw and although I love the performance the dust collection is worse than my old Delta contractor saw. The infeed length of the cast iron is also ridiculous short.

I have the F2 as well. I taped over every opening I could with duct tape, including behind the riving knife storage and placed a moveable magnet across the big opening in the front where the angle indicator is. My DC has improved dramatically.

Mark, great content! How about a greenhouse update? Is the polycarbonate roof still holding up?

This is a sign from above that you should get a new SawStop... :)

Heh. A better sign would be for one to show up in my shop (free) all set up and hooked up to dust collection. 😀

Most people overlook that a dust collector will only move as much air as the hose has surface area. By adding an additional 2 inch hose to a 4 inch hose will only slow the moving through the 4 inch hose and be less efficient. Less than ideal. Looking at how dusty your saw is, Im guessing you have an undersized dust collector. From personal experience my saw is never that dusty. Additionally, I see a good number of people have issues with that type of saw dust collection system. If you look at saws constructed fro profession use, Powermatic, Grizly high end cabinet saws, they do not use that system for the same reasons you have discovered.
