Vehicles equipped with GM Duramax diesel engines (Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra) have a coolant heater which can be plugged into 120VAC to make it easier to cold-start the diesel engine in the winter.
In GM's infinite wisdom, they located the plug in the engine compartment, rather than a more accessible location such as behind the grille. This means that you need to leave the hood ajar with the cord running into the engine compartment.
This presents two problems. First, the remote start is disabled when the hood is not fully closed. So you have the option of running the engine heater or remote starting the engine. You cannot do both.
Secondly, in the winter time with snow on the hood, you may not be able to open the hood and disconnect the heater if you have to use the truck.
To fix this dumb engineering issue, I will be relocating the engine heater plug to an area behind the grill so that I can use the engine heater without opening the hood.
