Always enjoy your coho spinning setup videos which lured me into salmon fishing, still watching the older ones every now and then although I’ve already upgraded my gears to the top limit😄just love the gear talks. My favorite spoon has almost the same shape (‘little Cleo’ made by ACME), simple and effective, works very well for trout and steelhead smolt too.

Excellent video Rod very informative for hook set and sensitivity also line stretch, compared to a spin cast set up for trout in Interior lakes. Thanks Rich! That Moby net is called D&K Special. It's not listed on the website and there is only a limited number in stock at the local retail stores right now (or maybe they're all gone now lol). It has the same hoop size as the Kamloops Trophy, just with a shorter handle which makes it easier to carry around for river fishing. Great Vid Rod. We are opposite on lure colours. I start with the blue and silver every time since I have had good success with it. But lately, in the last few years, it has been copper and orange or green and silver crocks. But my best Coho set up remains twitching 3/8 ounce jigs. Have you ever done much twitching?

I twitch jigs once awhile if the type of water allows it. 😃 Most or the time my preference is definitely casting spoons.

Hi Rod, thanks for this amazing video! I have a couple questions: Can I use a swivel to attach the leader to the main line, or will that mess up the spoon's action? I only have 12lb fluorocarbon leader STS, is it worth it for me to go buy 15lb? I am also using Gibbs spoons, should I replace their hooks with the VMC ones in the video, or are they ok? Thank you so much!
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod Жыл бұрын
Thanks Cameron, so because the fluorocarbon leader you’re attaching to the braided line is several feet long, you can’t really use a swivel to connect the two, it’d impede your casting. I would replace those hooks. You only get a few hook-ups per season so you want to make sure every single one of them sticks.

I have stradic FL 3000 and a daiwa Procyon al 3000. Daiwa is better value. Drag is smoother and holds a 25% more line than the stradic. It is also $50 cheaper. Thanks for so much great information Rod. I just picked up the 9' G Loomis you mentioned...beautiful feel. I got the medium fast action 8-12lbs. Is this rod too long and light for twitching jigs? I want to start throwing spoons and twitching jigs next season but everyone seems to say 7'6" med/heavy rod. What are your thoughts? 🤔 (I don't recall any of your videos twitching jigs?
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod Жыл бұрын
That 8-12lb E6X is pretty awesome too, can handle bigger fish easily. It's too long for twitching jigs. You can do it, the test strength makes it fast enough for it, but a shorter rod like 7' is definiely a lot easier on your body for twitching. The twitching movement is pretty fast and repetitive, the shorter and faster the rod the less energy you'd have to expend on it.

You can find coho in just about all kinds of water really. I personally look for parts of the run where the current is at walking speed or slower, anywhere from 3 to 6 feet deep, and ideally with good “cover” on the bottom, meaning a variety of rock sizes.

iam usually told by local tackle stores to go for 30lb or 40lb braid for salmon. may be not specifically coho but if i do want to use one set up for coho, chum and chinook all together. is the shimano 2500 enough for something like that? amazing video btw. all my vancouver fishing from few years ago up untill now is all because of your videos. cheers
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod Жыл бұрын
Thanks Kumar. I think if you intend to target chinook salmon as well, then go with the 3000. The 3000 is still perfectly fine for coho salmon, I've used a couple of them for coho in the past. It'd also really depend on the size of chinook salmon too. The Clarus rods in the video should be able to handle chinook salmon up to 15 pounds. 30 or 40lb test main braided seems like an overkill. The most we've used is 20lb test, which I would put on the 3000 size reel.

Here in Chilliwack, we are constantly advocating for good access for anglers of all ages, and the city has listened. We have a couple of spots where ramps have been built so someone like my 85 year old dad can walk down to the river bank without climbing down rocks. I hope someone around PA can do the same too.

If my main is mono, then yes. If my main is braided, then I almost always tie a section of the fluorocarbon to it as shown in this video. The only time when I would tie the lure directly to the braided main is if water visibility is low, or if I am fishing for species that couldn't care less about line visibility.

Yep! I've done a few including this one from a couple years ago: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hrN_n8Zqq7W2gIE.html But I am planning to do an updated one to show what I may have done differently since then.

That first lure you are holding is 12G which means its 3/8ths oz not 5/8th

Good catch, thanks for that. It's listed as 2/5oz on Prime Lures' website actually, I got it mixed up.

You don't use a fly rod for coho I guess, I love fighting coho on an 8wt.

I do at times, but rarely. It’s just a personal preference, coho on a stripped fly is definitely very fun too.

I'm cheap as heck but hate buying garbage, so I thought I'd chime in with some spendthrift advice that has helped me tremendously, for all us guys using hand-me-downs and ancient gear from our teenage years. The correct order to upgrade your crappy old gear to good quality stuff, starting with the most bang for least bucks... Number one is don't ever cheap out on hooks. Quality terminal tackle is the first place where spending a little more will land you a lot more fish. Second is your reel - there's almost no difference between a $300 dollar reel and a $3000 reel, but the difference between a $30 or $300 reel is everything. Good smooth bearings and easy casting for the win. And for my own experience, one or two reel sizes down from what everyone else uses is usually just fine. Nobody needs 500 yard of line and 20lbs drag. Braided mainline is your friend. Don't pay attention to the old stuck in their ways detractors. Learn some new knots, get better at casting, you'll never look back. You absolutely will land more fish. The last thing to upgrade is your rod. If what you got is working for you, don't change it unless you know EXACTLY what you want to change. Actually pay attention to videos like this and advice from your local tackle shop before you end up dropping good money on rods you won't like and don't end up using. And for my own experience on this one, like with reels, one size or strength less than everyone else is using works perfectly fine. Good luck out there 🤠🤙

I don’t understand why fishing nets cost so much, like average net costs 150-200
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod Жыл бұрын
The cost of Moby Nets is in that range because they are individually hand made in BC. The quality control is done by one person, so every single one going out would meet the quality expectations.

What's worse, but related, is how a shoreline can be packed with people and 2 of them are catching all the fish on 2 different lures and almost everyone else is using the same lure.
