I love yout tutorials, I'm 42 and started roller skating in March, after like 30 years of not having wheels on my feet ;) . Your advise is so clear and helpful, I quickly learnt how to skate backwards, I can also more or less turn from back to front (which you say is more difficult), but I can't turn from front to back! I don't know what I do wrong, maybe I don't feel secure... Also, I can do heel-heel manual, but toe-toe is a nightmare! Lots of training ahead of me, the thing is there is no rink where I live, and the weather is not always good enough to practice. Anyway, thanks for your time and patience in teaching how to skate!

You can do this. I’m in my mid 40’s and revisited skating about 5 years ago or so now and have been hard at it since. My 10 year old self couldn’t keep up with me if he tried. Ignore the age stereotypes, spend time in skates, and you will get there.

Hi Skatie! I'm new to your channel. I decided to get back into skating at age 50. I do have experience skating but not outdoors and it's been years so I'm a little nervous. I truly appreciate your videos, great tips. Stopping is still kinda scary for me. I have had my skate for less than a week. I have skated three times already but have found turning to be the easiest way to stop so far. Haven't mastered using my toe stop, still figuring it out. It's just not as smooth stopping outside as it is on the rink. I have watched a few of your videos and will be referencing your channel in my skate adventures if that's ok. Thanks again for your time and the videos can't wait to binge watch everything.

Perfect timing, thanks Skatie! 😊 Love your video's! 💛 Today I will be checking out a local skating club for a group session. Someone ruined the back breaks of my bike last night so I have decided to skate there as it's only a 10 minute bike ride away. Hopefully the rougher footpath won't eat away at my wheels too much. Nice way to warm up before class 🙂 I started following you a week ago. Look forward to watching many more fun tutorials of yours 🥰 Keep up the great work!

@@SkatieThanks Katie 😊 Today I went for another outdoors Skate. Had barely left my house before having a big fall on my bottom as I tried to cross the road (walking mind you!) I'm 6 foot or taller with roller skates on so it's a big drop! I felt quite winded and still feel sore in my chest/ribcage. Kept going for a bit after having a breather but after passing a few more streets I decided to take off my skates and walk to my far away destination instead. The walkways were mostly rough to skate on and there were pebbles everywhere! I decided that I would rather call in late than risk injuring myself again. Smooth rink skating only for me from now on! 😊

Great information for outdoor skating. I primarily skate outdoors these days and live in the Midwest of the US and regularly encounter surfaces that are absolutely awful 😂. The staggered stance is very important and keeping the knees bent is a must. I will regularly skate over textured patches by intersections on sidewalks and patches of paved by brick. On top of the staggered stance I will also focus my body weight on the heels of my skates. This is also helpful in areas where the surface may be groomed but you encounter things like sand and pebbles. The weight on the toes significantly increases the chances of tripping. I also incorporate plenty of hopping that you might find is beneficial as you progress. Try this from the staggered stance and be sure to land in the staggered stance. Scissoring is something I also do a lot of and is great for powering through series of cracks even at high speeds. Scissoring with the weight focus on the heels is pretty stable and trustworthy. I regularly skate over a few boardwalk style bridges at high speeds doing this. Over time you’ll know what is probably going to make you trip and you’ll always know what to do it just takes time. Skating on less than ideal surfaces has it’s cons such as there are certain things I just won’t work on or do, such as a lot of backwards skating but it will make you a much more adaptive and sure footed skater. So if and when I ever do make it to a rink, it’s nothing but a pure treat because I don’t have to worry about any of it and can focus on some moves.

After your previous video I bought also outdoor heliums, and they are very good and kind to me even as a beginer, (i was circling around them for a while). Now i know, and see them in this video also. Lot of things in this video are very important for new skaters outside (ME), often no one of us has perfect surface on backyard and these "real" surfaces are everywhere. I am adding to the vote - path element i hate also the most, are those (elevated) "dots". While going through brick path, i also go diagonal when they are in perpendicual arangement or shape, then it is not that punishing. Thank you for the video!

I tend to go fast and hope for the best but not necessarily what I’d recommend 😂 Definitely never feel that you can’t take a little walk over those evil things, then you can just step from one surface to the other abs back again. If you’re going to skate over then, make sure you’re in staggered stance.

Hi Skatie! I have a question. Which would be better for beginners to practice roller skating, indoors or outdoors? I really love your videos! I just bought my roller skates last week and I came across your channel and I'm learning a lot from you! Thank you very much!
@NobelStitch
@NobelStitch 2 жыл бұрын
Katie has some video's about different kinds of wheels for indoor and outdoor skating 🙂 Not sure what she will recommend for you to start with though. It's largely personal preference I think. Also weather dependent. I'm a beginner roller skater too and have so far only practiced outdoors at a nice smooth skating rink that I am fortunate enough to live close to and often have all to myself! Def avoid rough roads and paths to begin with! I'm quite confident 10 days in but still found it very challenging and I had a big painful fall. Softer wheels are best for outdoors (heard that first from Katie 😉) I will be joining a beginner club soon though at an indoor sporting center with wooden floors. The trainer there told me that my beginner skates should be fine to use there. They aren't super budget. Just average. Have ordered fancier skates so look forward to testing the difference soon! Will leave it to expert Katie to properly answer your question 🙂

Hi! I’ve just watched some of your videos for beginners, and I was wondering what the height of the heel on the skates depends on. Do all of them have heels or are some of them “flat”? What’s the difference? Thanks!☺️
@Skatie
@Skatie 2 жыл бұрын
The boots with a heel pushes the weight over the ball of the foot which can help with balance. However flat boots are great too, they tend to be used for speed and derby and also at skate parks for speed and stability.

Skating outside is like a punch in the gut after skating indoors LOL. Question for @skatie - my skates have 85A wheels, which were described as hybrid and fine for outside, but I can definitely feel every slight variation in the surface - making me very wobbly - and pebbles take me down. Basically, I feel like I can't skate at all 😞 I know it comes down to personal preference, but in your experience, could I get used to 85A outside relatively quickly (I know it will vary by person, but just on average), or would a gummier wheel be better when outside since I'm still a beginner?
@Skatie
@Skatie Жыл бұрын
I roll on a 84a outside but not all wheels are created equal. My 84a’s are big, 65mm (Roll-Line Helium) the size helps to absorb the vibration and bump over debris. If you’re rolling a small wheel 57mm for example you’ll lose a lot of that shock absorbing power.

It sounds like either the skates are fastened too tightly somewhere, or you might need arch support or similar. I sometimes get this issue in quad skates and I felt it even more when I tried my old inline skates. I also over pronate. I use skate insoles. If there’s a specialist skate shop near you, they might be able to advise.

The main issue is with the wet comes less traction and also the risk of rusting any metal work. Bearings etc. I do skate outside if it’s slightly damp but just make sure to scan for puddles etc as they can be a real hazard.
