Erik Spoelstra coached an absolute defensive clinic that caught the 76ers off guard, but Nick Nurse and his staff made all the right adjustments.

Coaching matters more over a stretch of games, while individual skill matters more in individual games. Combining good coaching centered around those skills is what gives you championship level teams. The worst part about coaching in the NBA is that whenever things go bad, usually it is the coach that is being discarded first. While the most common reason things often don't work is because of players not performing, or the front office not having built a great roster or a combination of both.

As a long time Raps fan I can tell you this is exactly what Nurse excels at. He’s not the best schematic coach (defensively he’s up there but not on offence), he’s not a developmental/lock room coach, but he’s the best at in game adjustment especially if he has good players to work with.

@@nolanrussell6326 that’s not true at all. We had good amount of creators with all star FVV, All nba Siakam, all defensive OG, Scottie, GTJ etc. the old team had talent. @michaelahurt
@michaelahurt Ай бұрын
I'm not sure it would matter. The Bucks roster doesn't make sense. They have the same issues Philly did last year which is they are locked into playing certain guys because they don't have enough two way players; their two stars fit better on paper than on the court; and the #3 guy is a better compliment to the #1 guy. Bud's issue was that he was dogmatic in sticking to his defensive principles -- i.e. playing drop coverage and using Giannis as a point forward. In 2021 when they won he did make timely adjustments once he gave in and made them. He was just very stubborn about making them in the first place. The big advantage Nurse has is he will try things that are unorthodox. But you gotta have the right ingredients. It doesn't matter how good the chef is, you can't make a meal out prime rib and spoiled vegetables.

I watched this game last night and it was highly entertaining, despite being a bit of a defensive slugfest at times. Embiid wasn't really conditioned yet, as he was standing with his hands on his knees for most of the match. Still, his gravity opened up a lot of plays. The Heat really could have used more shooting, or more offense in general. I think Herro really did a good job given the circumstances of being basically the only creation on the Heat team. Butler was hurt during the game and visibly slower, though in true Butler fashion he still made some excellent defensive plays. Still, against any other coach than Nick Nurse, the zombie Heat would have ran away with this game. I can't wait for their match against the Bulls, which would be another defensive minded game. If Embiid can play himself into shape, the Sixers have a good chance of going far this year. I really love Oubre and Batum as flexible defensive wings, they were never a bad defensive team but now they cover the gaps quite a bit better and leave Embiid to protect the basket. It is not like they are incredibly deep, but the lineups that they do have are quite strong.

They would have lost this game 100/100 times with Doc. This video makes me feel better about Embiid too, who looked tired, sluggish. At 96 all Oubre never got both feet outside of the lane to reestablish, so that And1 should have been a turnover. Next play Herro has his wrist hit on the 3, you can see his wrist move on the reply as the ball leaves his hand. Few plays later was a back and back, which could have been a foul on 76ers for pushing him back. I'm ok with it getting more physical, but that And1 should have been a turnover. Not a 76ers fan, just wanting refs to call it fair both ways in every game or Tim Donahue looks correct in the NBA being rigged for bigger markets. Also makes me realize the Nuggets might be done in by the Refs who work part time for the Lakers org.
