Davey Allison was one of my favorite drivers when I was a little kid. In 1992 he endured some terrible injuries en route to his first serious championship run; so bad that if they happened to anyone today, they'd be forced to sit out of the car. However, Davey kept on pushing and came within a hair's breadth of winning it all.

9:48 I claim that Davey finished the 2nd race at Talladega, but in actuality he started the race, and waited until a rain delay came along before subbing out for Bobby Hillin to take the wheel. Bobby finished in 3rd.

I remember being pissed at Irvan for ruining Davey's shot at the title that year ... many other people felt the same way. Then later after we lost Davey, Ernie became the driver of the 28 car. One odd coincidence is that Ernie Irvan lost it and overcorrected into Davey, and Irvan would drive the #28 car after Davey's death. The 1992 championship was insane. I find it tragic that Davey couldn't win it, but it was also a year where all of the competitors fought like hell to be there.

Davey was my all time favorite racer. He was tough, humble and a gentleman! I was there at that race and if it wasn't for Ernie Irvan and Sterling Marlin falling back to slow him down and doubling up to overpower Bobby Hillin in Davey's car, that race was definitely his. Davey actually started the race with a broken wrist and all banged up and drove to the first caution which was a short rain shower.

An excellent video - well done. I have to say, when I was a kid in 1992, I was wondering why he was getting hurt all the time. I remember thinking he was fragile, or just susceptible to injury more than other drivers. Not that he shouldn't have been out there, or was weak in any way - far from it, especially all that I learned much later. But I worried for him that year, and that day in 1993 made those fears reality. EDIT: Also can't forget Davey's brother Clifford dying at Michigan in August, and Bobby Hillin, Jr.'s relief driver appearance at Talladega in July.

this takes me back to my young teen self. 1992 had enough story that it could be made into a movie. The King retiring. Davey trying to avoid problems to stay in title contention. Awesome Bill doing all he could.. And Alan having just enough to win the title. All that season, I was glued to the tv. I recorded Richard Petty's Farewell with Alabama on TNN the night before, and recorded the Atlanta race that Sunday. In '93, I can tell you exactly where I was and all the tears I cried, all the disbelief I had when I woke up to hearing Alan being killed. And all the praying I did later that year, hoping Davey would survive...like he had done before...I could ramble on about Neil, Clifford,... gosh i miss those ppl.. even if they weren't family. Many of those NASCAR drivers were like extended fam.. ya know?

In 1992 I was 7 years old and a huge Davey Allison fan. I went to the Atlanta race as a 6 year old in 1991 and I went to the spring Atlanta race in 1992. It was cold as heck, but I cherish those days going to see the races in the bitter cold with my Dad cheering on Davey. Was hard for me to really process Alan Kulwicki and Davey dying so close together, I still remember my dad telling me when I was getting excited about Talladega (I loved those super speedways at the time). I became a Jeff Gordon fan, but I still feel cheated that we never got to see Davey have a full career. Him, Gordon, and Earnhardt would have had an insane set of seasons. Throw in a dash of Mark Martin for good measure and it would have been an amazing decade.

I seem to recall Automobile or one of those magazines had a cover with the title "Furious Fords" because the Thunderbird was so dominant that season. I liked all three of those drivers and it was an amazing season to watch if you were rooting for them to win.

I just picked a random video of yours Slapshoes to tell you I'm a 23 year old North Eastern boy and I have never watched a Nascar race in my life. But after watching all your videos multiple times your passion for the sport has convinced me to give it a try. I have a lot to learn about racing but I am a fan today because of you.

Davey was my driver. Always pulled for him. He was the driver that sucked me into NASCAR. My favorite race was at Michigan. When he lapped the whole field alone. No drafting. Showed the true power of Yates engines. We he died, I stayed with the Havoline team until Erving got hurt. I stopped watching NASCAR after. Thanks for the memories.

Davey was awesome! I was just a kid, but he quickly became my favorite driver. It probably had something to do with the gnarly crashes he got caught up in, as I was only 7 the year he died, and the crashes are what I most remember. That, and his Texaco #28 car looked cool, and stood out amongst the rest. I fully believe he would have been one of the all time greats though, had tragic fate not intervened. He had it all. The pedigree from his family, the commercial appeal, and the actual talent to make it happen.

I was torn between Davey and Allan Kulwicki that year but i was happy when Allan won the championship. Always glad to see the underdog win. I was on vacation with my Family that year. We didn't have TV where we were but i heard the terrible news about Davey on the radio. It ruined my whole vacation. I couldn't focus on anything else. Then i thought about Bobby Allison and his Family who lost both sons within months of each other. No matter what happened after a race Davey was always smiling and signing autographs if he could. He seldom had a bad word to say about anyone. He was one tough young man and is still missed by anyone who saw him race, even today.

I read an amazing book about the Alabama Gang called "Miracle." In it, I found out that Davey had to Velcro his hand to the gear shift at Talladega after the Pocono wreck. It is stories like this that make that era of NASCAR and the drivers some of the best in the history of the sport.

I really was a big time Davey Allison fan and my oldest sister was an Alan Kulwicki fan and sadly, in 1992 or 1993, both were taken from us in a matter of months....hurting as I was, swearing I'd never watch another NASCAR race, I didn't watch for 3 years but when I did, I started following Dale Earnhardt and sadly, he too, also passed in a wreck that most thought he would walk away from when he clearly had been in much worse but sadly, he too, passed away. Now, I back my fellow New Jerseyan, Martin Truex, Jr. and he won a NEXTEL Cup Championship and he's still running pretty well and he's pretty stout! I miss Davey, Alan and Dale and while they will always hold a special place in my heart forever, Martin's my guy right now! :-) RIP Davey, Alan and Dale :-(

That 2nd Pocono race, which is when Davey took that nasty ride, was his. He was completely dominating that race, led around 115 of the 160 laps at that point and the only reason why he didn't lead more was because of pit stops. To finish 3rd with everything negative that happened that year (injuries, Clifford's passing, etc.) was remarkable. I'll always wonder how many wins and championships he would have had. My favorite NASCAR driver of all-time and that will never change.

Lifelong racefan here. Been watching since Senior died, tuned out the last couple seasons. I had no idea about a lot of this old NASCAR drama from the recap days! Your channel is a pleasure, you've got a knack for this and a lot of us younger NASCAR fans have been waiting to see this stuff presented so well!!! Side note, my enjoyment of this format makes me wonder if watching recaps would further my enjoyment of modern seasons. I'm one of the few that actually likes the Chase format. Hmm

NASCAR will never be what it once was. They fought for every victory. That's why it was "Win or Spin" for drivers like Davey Allison and (my hero) Wild Bill from Dawsonville. They pushed their cars to the absolute limit and sometimes they'd take the checkered and sometimes they'd take an ambulance but, they never ever took a day off. Bruised, battered and broken, they'd get in the drivers seat and drive just as hard as they could. Those guys were the ones that made NASCAR a household name and brought the fans. Days of Thunder? It was those guys that that movie immortalized. R.I.P. Allison, Kulwicki, Earnhardt, Bonnet and Mcduffie. Surely missed but, never to be forgotten.

Those races are probably still the most exciting races in NASCAR history. The Hooters and the All-Star race. And that Pocono crash is probably one of the scariest. You should also mention that Davey was racing for the Winston Million...but got snubbed by rain at Darlington.

I was a big Davey fan back in the day. Loved him, was my favorite driver. Sadly, we lost him too soon at which point I began to be a Dale Sr. fan, and, we all know how that turned out as well. I started to root for Sterling Marlin after that, but it wasn't long before he suffered a string of crashes that left him pretty beat up and he ended up retiring. Made me start to wonder if being a fan of a driver was a good thing as it seemed the drivers I liked didn't have a very good time of things.
