Slave I isn't that good of a ship.
Get over it.
It's consummately stupid that Disney went out of their way to idiotically rename it, but it's still a stupid ship, and Boba should feel bad for continuing to tool around in that steaming pile of suck and fail for as long as he has.

The really fun part of "Jango isn't a real Mandalorian" retcon in Clone Wars (9:40) is that it was meant as a joke. Because the then-current backstory was that Jango had actually been the leader and last survivor of the True Mandalorian faction in their recent civil war. It also foreshadowed that the guy who said it was loyal to the reconstituted other side. Then Disney wiped all of that out except for Clone Wars, and that line was the only part still canon. With The Mandalorian retconning it back that Jango (and therefore Boba) really was a Mandalorian after all, but not the other details, we're just left with "some asshole lied about it for literally no reason".

The Mandalorian culture originally comes from Georges production notes and even at that stage Boba was supposed to be someone who just wore the armour but wasn't an actual Mandalorian. It wasn't until the 2000's when Karen Traviss really fleshed them out, I always liked her take on them being more like Vikings as they spent most of their time as farmers and craftsmen on Mandalore and set out to fight when they needed money or were called to war by the current Mandalore. That was overwritten by The Clone Wars even before the Disney canon took over and while I like both versions, the legends Mando's had a really pragmatic outlook that set them apart from the binary morality you usually find in Star Wars.

I'm glad someone agrees with me on this ship. It's well armed and equipped, but that's really all. I understand Boba's personal attachment to the design as well, but about the only thing it has going for it is being tractor-beam capable with such a small ship. My friends argue that it is good because it is well armored. I argue that if it were so well armored the cockpit would be using sensors, or at least utilize a viewport that isn't so large that pretty much any hit to the front with something explosive would pop it like the can of pressurized air that it is.

According to the lore, the shielding and the sensor suites of the Slave I were extensively augmented first by Jango and then also by Boba, and apparently the chin blaster cannons were "the only thing remaining of the stock Firespray-31". Okay, while I completely agree with the judgement that making the ship's profile as wide as it can get makes absolutely no sense neither drive nor maneuverability wise, nor can I find ANY other reason why this configuration would be beneficial (although I must admit the design looks cool, perhaps that alone has indeed been in mind of the designer,) I still am inclined to point out a few features of this ship you haven't really mentioned. First off, the blaster cannons on the chin of the ship. While it would be absolutely atrocious for these to be mounted that way on a fighter, on the Slave I they presumed the presence of a gunner using the weapons' built in optics (note how Boba Fett was shooting at Obi-Wan in Episode 2: there was no way for him to have a visual from the cockpit at that angle). In _that_ configuration _in particular,_ having the cannons on the long arm in relation to the cockpit could actually be an advantage in space combat: you could quickly alter firing angles by simply rotating the craft around the roll axis. Second, I want to point out that a seismic charge emits what is clearly a concentrated wave of gravitational disruption, judging by how it slices asteroids in half, and there is thus no reason for it not to work in space.

As someone who knows/knew one of the disappeared--and indeed was her boyfriend--thank you. I want to get that out of the way before weighing in on a single ship design, Star Wars or otherwise. As to Uyghur 1, Kazakh 1, Hui 1, Tibetan 1, or whatever name she goes under that the Bloodthirsty Mouse has brought upon itself, back when she was called Slave 1, ships of her class appeared in a game called X-Wing: Alliance, which was designed by people who clearly had experience at the whole combat flight sim genre. I'm only guessing on the experience part here, but the second you'd climb into that ship, virtually all of your shots would go low (real parallax error!) and your target profile was ENORMOUS. It was not a ship you wanted to fly if you wanted to survive, and I often wonder if they did that intentionally or not (especially since it was extremely well-armored and extremely-well-shielded, but both your shields and hull integrity got whittled down REAL fast).

However, the Triebflügel, as its name implies, had three wings attached to a rotating ring around the fuselage, and each wing had a ramjet on the end. The ramjets would push the wings to rotate fast enough to lift the plane off the ground, then the plane and its engines would rotate to propel it in forward flight, still keeping the wing assembly rotating. Yes, it looks as stupid as it sounds.

Alright. There’s a key detail missed in this video that sort of explains why this ship is the way it is. Granted, from the beginning as you mentioned all the ship was meant to be was “cool-looking.” There is a fair explanation here though. The Indentured Servant 1 was a modified Firespray-31-class patrol and attack craft. In lore this craft was commissioned and created specifically for use on the prison moon of Oovo IV. It was used solely by that prison. The ship was never meant to be a space superiority fighter or even a long-range starship by any means. With space for six prisoners, its primary use would have been transportation of said prisoners, and occasionally taking care of breakouts. In these circumstances, the high visibility of the windscreen would be useful for surveying the moonscape. Beyond that, its threatening appearance would be sufficient to quell an escapee. Imagine being an escapee staring that thing down. It appears very formidable, despite having only its dual blaster cannons and a tractor beam in its armament. Either way, that was really all it needed. If you take this into consideration the ship serves its purpose and serves its purpose well. Jango Fett once took a job on Oovo IV and stole a Firespray-31 in his getaway. This ship became the Unpaid Intern I. Jango would go on to heavily modify the ship. He upgraded the twin cannons and added all of its other weapons. It’s no longer canon as far as I am aware, but can still be assumed to be, that Boba is the one who modified the cockpit to rotate. So long story short, this craft used to basically be a prison bus, but Jango stole it and replaced all of the seats with guns to make it worth his while.
@Pyre
@Pyre 2 жыл бұрын
One, these are fantastic points. Two, one has to wonder if the writer who came up with that lore didn't also think of them. The perspective of "This thing is meant to hover ominously and threaten to laser your grounded, unprotected ass out of existence" legitimately makes the whole thing a lot more fun/intimidating.
@askmeaboutsugma
@askmeaboutsugma 2 жыл бұрын
@@Pyre Well, this lore was established after the creation of Jango Fett, so some 30-ish years after the ship’s first appearance in Empire. So I think whoever thought of this role for the Firespray was just an absolute genius 😂 I couldn’t think of a better explanation for such an impractical design. “Yeah. It has to look intimidating. It doesn’t even have to fly all that well. We just want the thing to spook even a Wookiee into submission.”

GL has said a number of times that was eating a cheeseburger when he came up with the design of the Falcon. 2:26 that's useful for a repair ship that would repair space stations and larger ships and maybe do some shifting and moving of construction supplies and shipping containers, but not so much elsewise. It would make much more sense if there were lifting/grasping arms coming out of the the stubby wings. As a gunship it's rather poor. And there's no rear visibility. The smart play on Disney's part wouldn't have been to remove or change the name, but give it a good reason to have the name. . The Clones were all mind-controlled slaves. Boba, following in his father's footsteps, instead made a life for himself as a free man. The ship's name is Slave 1, in honor of him being the first clone (which, he doesn't actually know he is, but reasonably assumes so), and of his enslaved "brothers". . Since the name of the ship is never actually mentioned in Attack of the Clones, it's not unreasonable to say that Jango might've had a different name for it before, and that Boba changed it shortly after Order 66, when he would've started hearing about the clones being "removed" from active duty.

9:02 oddly the Ion cannon in the Mandalorian is where the blasters are in Book of Boba as an alt-fire. Older stuff had them replacing the rapid fire funs from Episode 2. Maybe both can alt fire or maybe each barrel of each gun at the end of the handle is different.
@MrGrimsmith
@MrGrimsmith 2 жыл бұрын
Yup, definitely dumb. As dumb as the B wing? Eh, flip a coin. Stick with the flat approach, merge the handle bit in to the base and flatten the whole thing out to present a narrower profile head on. That would leave enough room for the appropriate armament for a patrol craft - turrets. Forward cannons and launchers, definitely. Needs a dorsal turret too though. Now for the obligatory rant section - The VH22 Osprey is an engineering clusterfuck. The logical, sensible thing to do, especially considering the "redundant" shaft drive system between the engines, would have been to put the engines in the bloody middle and use a significantly lighter shaft drive assemby to each rotor assembly. That reduces wing loading, hydraulic loading (you don't have to turn the engines as well now) and the overall mass of the systems required for the aircraft. That's not even mentioning what you could then do with the wing section and profile now you aren't hanging bits of equipment from the ends of them that should be in the middle, you know, near the CG laterally as well as fore and aft. Oh and ducted fans rather than rotors, mechanically simpler therefore less likely to fail. I love the concept, just the execution is a 2/10 at most. Oh and the Dockmaster sounds like he/it requires an antivirus course and possibly a look at the VRMs. There seem to have been a few voltage spikes here and there on this one... :P

@@gratinator No as that design doubles down on the contrarotating rotor design by having a pair on each side then making it worse by having them tilt too. The big issue I have with the V-22 is mounting the engines on the wing tips with a gearbox in the middle. They had issues with damage caused to carrier decks from the exhaust as well as a lot of fun getting the transfer system to work properly. Too much unnecessary complexity when a simpler solution is available irks me. It can't break if it isn't there.

I could see a design reason for "well, it lands on its back" if the ship were designed as part of a larger ship, maybe normally acting as a turret or something, operating in space 99.9% of the time that way and just happening to be able to land on its back if it absolutely *had* to go to a planet since that's where the thrusters were. . Maybe. But the ramp and blasters don't make sense in that configuration, either.

You build shit to work...to do its job...and THEN if you can make it pretty then that's fine. In the world of sci-fi, ship volume and reality have nothing to do with the designs. The creators tell the model-makers to make 'something' and they don't worry about whether it makes sense or not.
