Outside of lore, the design was based on sketches Joe Johnston made doing the art production for Empire Strikes Back, but it was decided that the AT-AT’s would be a bit more visually exciting and more of a spectacle than big rolling tanks, but your mileage may vary.
@bearnaff9387
@bearnaff9387 Жыл бұрын
Y'know, AT-AT's do have more spectacle, but just as many Juggernauts forming an incoming tide of inevitability would have driven home how fucked the rebels were in the face of a galactic-scale military whose nose they had just bloodied. If the rebels had faced a group of tanks, each of which are the size of buildings, with the same hardware they had in the movie, it would have been an even more one-sided battle. The ice speeders would have been left on the ground while the handful of X-Wings were mobilized in their much-less useful ground attack role where all they basically have is their torpedoes. The Ion cannon would still be stuck firing up to keep the space clear of bombarding vehicles, so the rebels would have had handheld blasters and laser turrets. If the armor functions the way I think it does, the blasters would leave scoring but not penetrate and the lasers would merely make the plating comfortably warm to lean against in the frigid Hoth air. It wouldn't end up being a total walk in the park, Luke would be able to use his Force bullshit to know when to fire torpedoes at the compound wheels of the Juggernauts in order to wreck their steering. But, that only turns a Juggernaut into a large gun emplacement that will still disperse its troops with all of their hardware, just a little further from the Rebel base than they would have liked.

That’s actually sort of interesting since, thermodynamically that doesn’t really make sense. Usually heat is a problem with machinery and space makes it difficult for machines to get rid of heat, decreasing thermal efficiency. You’d think something with reactors or SciFi thrusters like an X-Wing would produce a ton of waste heat (bad) and would need to get rid of it, something an atmosphere would excel at doing since it would act as a medium to disperse heat (good). Food for thought I guess.

@@bob38028 an X wing is designed for an environment where venting heat is as difficult. It's made to bleed out as much heat from its power plant and weapons as it possibly can because it operates in a vacuum. Toss it in an environment where Radiation isn't the only the only way to vent excess energy and you've got conviction with extremely cold and rapidly moving air and the design that let's it fly in vacuum without cooking its crew leads to icing issues and frozen parts because loosing heat is a lit faster and more effective with a medium to transfer energy through. A X wing is packing far far better weapons than a snow speeder if they could operate in Hoths atmosphere for any decent amount of time they'd have short work of a few AT-AT walkers it's also why the empire didn't say send some Tie fighter to provide air cover

If memory serves me right, all of the Rothana Heavy Engineering / Kuat Drive Yards heavy vehicles such as the Juggernaut, AT-TE and AT-OT used the superconducting armor. It's just that due to the sheer amount of surface area on the Juggernaut, it was best at dissipating the energy again, rather than slowly boiling the crew and eventually setting off the fuel or ammo. Which did still happen in an episode of The Clone Wars.

Yeah, there's a limited ratio of width to length that is practical for tracked vehicles which this almost is. In place steering on something this long is going to end up just dragging the outer wheels sideways against their traction. There's at least 3 things on this to help mitigate that a little: There's no tracks to pop off the wheels when you try it. If the front and rear wheels can turn a little they''ll only be moving mostly against the grain instead of entirely. The all-wheel drive of the segments of the inner wheels means they can get a lot more traction than normal for that tight a turn.

Each wheel cluster is powered off a single electric motor supplied from the main body so you don't actually have any diffs on the main body or U-Joints to worry about. At that point designing a limited slip clutch system for the 5 wheels in the cluster is way simpler and it also makes it easy to pull said clusters for maintenence or replacement. After all, this is Star Wars and they basically use fancy electric rocket engines anyway. It'd be way easier to design the tank around a similar power supply and just send that power to electric motors, rather than centralizing power output like a car or modern truck. Best modern analogy I could think of would be a train locotmive where a generator sends power to the traction motors that actually provide the propulsion. Given that all of the wheels are compound Wheels with their own suspension, drive, and anti slip..... if you had a computer module that will be able to control all of that during a stationary turn.... I suppose it wouldn't be impossible for you to do that without screwing up the wheels and creating a maintenance nightmare. The more I look at this the more I think of the overlapping road wheels that the Germans used on the Tiger 1, 2, and panther tanks. Yes you had phenomenal ground pressure and traction, but when I came to maintaining those things it was a nightmare and a half. I know some multi wheeled vehicles have the ability to reduce power on one side and take it to the other side to help with turning. However this is only advised to be done at slow speeds and as few times as possible to reduce wear on the tires. And given how much this thing theoretically could weigh I imagine that they just phase these things out because of how much they fucked up city roads every time they turn. Here's a great alternative idea. Reduce the number of Wheels to 6 but increase their size. Space them out and give them a wider turning radius per wheel. Or is ground pressure is a problem just make this a fully tracked vehicle.

Just gimme those forward and rearward suspensions. First off the length to beam ratio on that thing isn't that far from a truck, so just letting the two front and rear wheels steer will provide plenty of off center propulsion and with limited slip wheels we can control and calibrate. None of the wheels will go out of balance. This daft thing should be able to turn on a literal dime. The wheels are around a meter wide but 5 layers thick. It's got all the independent driven wheels you can imagine. Second. If I just reduce the ground pressure being transferred to the fore and rearmost wheels in an urban environment and suddenly tank steering (combined with the antislip drive motors) makes the thing turn around within it's length! And because it's a literal armor brick on wheels, probably turn around through buildings in the way regardless. The problem with heavy wheeled machines has always been ground pressure. I dunno what ultralight alloys and component they used on that thing, but it should have a ground pressure worse than an. ATAT and thus get stuck in anything not a road. And probably has to avoid driving through buildings wholesale due to the existence of the things called 'substandard subsurface subfloors' Usually referred to as basements. Oddly enough. A wooden floor over a hole in the ground the size of a house is a rather effective tank trap and can capture entire tanks

@@Ishlacorrin Not really- the laser cannon and rockets would probably disable or possibly destroy a Baneblade, although it would probably be pretty heavily damaged as well. Along with that, it also can have infantry and lighter vehicles, which would pose an issue for the Baneblade. Also it is just better in a non-combat sense- it is significantly faster (about 5x faster), it can act as a FOB for a force, carry supplies, act as an observation post- basically it can do pretty much anything a vehicle can that isn’t anti-Titan-class roles. Edit: Along with that, the Baneblade is going to be shot from above, since the Juggernaut is so massive. And some counterpoints for my argument- The Juggernaut’s weapons are mostly mounted on the top, and if the Baneblade got close, it just cannot shoot it. The Juggernaut basically can’t turn, and most of its weapons are not anti-tank. The Baneblade has very effective armor, although as said before, the top armor is what is being shot, and it tends to be weaker. The BB also just has more firepower, but the Juggernaut literally has a BUNKER in it, and will be able to tank a few shots from a Baneblade. wow i did not mean to write this much. sorry.

A Mk XXXII? Weird choice, IMO, since the XXXIII gets all the glory from being the main-line machine during the Final War. The real problem is that Bolos are _expensive_ and deploying more than a company (twelve units) for a single operation is virtually unheard of; any planet that can survive a company of Bolos is probably too well defended to land the things in the first place. Which is to say that _of course_ a Bolo will beat a Juggernaut in a one-on-one; it's just that it won't be a one-on-one until after the Bolo has taken out the first fifty or whatever Juggernauts. There's a reason late model Bolos are designated Planetary Siege Units.

The A6 Juggernaut is one of the few Star Wars vehicles to actually have a lineage of precursor models with the A5&B5 models that where cannon before the much larger variant seen in Revenge of the Sith. Out of universe all three where based on the concept art for the AT-AT, with the A5 being the “original” Juggernaut until the introduction of the larger onscreen one in 2005. There also used to be some lore that had the A6 being deployed alongside the AT-AT’s at Hoth. Both the A5 and A6 Juggernauts where also canonically considered logistics nightmares compared to the AT-AT,with most operators post clone wars having to deal with constant breakdowns and long wait times for spares (doubly so for it in Rebel service)

Star Wars EU lore nerd here. You're mostly correct. If a military wanted a moving, heavily-armed pillbox that could move forwards or backwards, the Juggernaut is the go-to murderizing tool. Juggernauts are breakthrough tanks. The urban stuff can be handled with vehicles like the TX-130 Saber or an ATTE, though I would argue both of the vehicles mentioned need a heavy refit before I'd be willing to use them.

I don't think you mentioned it but a cool fact is that it doesn't have a proper front end as it can be driven from either, so it's up to you if you think it looks cooler with a smaller head or tail! I don't think the AT-AT is all bad, but I can't help but imagine that the Rebel Alliance would be over in minutes if the Empire sent 3 Juggernauts to bum-rush Echo Base on Hoth instead of the lumbering AT-ATs. They would bulldoze through the hanger doors before the Rebels could even sound the alarm, so I guess they were just too OP!
