Thanks for the fundamentals sir. Matrix metering is adequate for me in most scenarios. I use spot metering when I do bird photography. I use it in combination with the AE lock.

I have always used spot metering personally, but you brought to light a much better understanding for me of the other metering modes and I will share this with beginners and I feel this is the best explanation I have seen.

I saw your really good video on the dry cabinet and decided to watch a few more of your videos. You have a GREAT channel and video content! Not to mention you use my two favorite cameras. On metering, do you teach that all reflective metering needs to be INTERPRETED by the photographer and not just taken as given? For example, I really do love spot metering on a face, as you do. However, all reflective readings place what has been read in the MIDDLE of the exposure. So, unless you happen to want the model's face to be placed in the middle of the exposure (perhaps you do) you will have to take the information from the spot metering and then deliberately darken or lighten the exposure in order to place the model's face PRECISELY where you want it to be on the exposure. Otherwise, you will always have faces right in the middle which may not be what you actually want. With spot metering this is an important step! With matrix metering the extra step of interpretation and deliberate placement is not as necessary as with spot metering, unless the entire scene is really bright (like a frame full of snow) or really dark (like the entrance to a cave). Also, since you use my two favorite cameras I am sure you also use highlight-weighted metering. I like this one quite a bit, especially if you do not have ANYTHING in the scene that you want clipped on the highlights end of the exposure. I like this one with faces, compensating 1/3 stop darker. Nothing worse than accidentally clipping a highlight on someone's face! In any event, I think your channel is FANTASTIC and cannot wait to watch all of your other videos! (From a peak at your light meter in this video, it seems as if you also use the same meter that I do.)

Thanks for another excellent session. I wish i would have found out your channels earlier - it would have saved a lot of my time & money! Will make sure my friends also get to know this. One of the dilemma we have in bird photography is when to use what metering. It will be great if you can cover that - what to use in outdoor open space with good sunlight vs in jungles where light is low & fluctuating. What to do with big static birds vs small moving birds etc. Does it also matter if the bird is white or dark colored. Most notably (where I missed a lot of shots) - what to use for a bird on a branch with back light / bright sky. Most of my pictures come under exposed even with spot metering.

I have always wanted to learn this, finally explained simply.
