Royal Ballet Resident Choreographer Wayne McGregor, Dramaturg Uzma Hameed and Royal Ballet dancers Alessandra Ferri and Federico Bonelli discuss Woolf Works with writer Bonnie Greer. Find out more: www.roh.org.uk/productions/woo...
Wayne McGregor’s new full-length ballet is inspired by the works of Virginia Woolf, with an original score by Max Richter (Infra).
'Life is not a series of gig-lamps symmetrically arranged; life is a luminous halo, a semi-transparent envelope surrounding us from the beginning of consciousness to the end… the proper stuff of fiction is a little other than custom would have us believe it.’ - Virginia Woolf, Modern Fiction
Multi-award-winning choreographer Wayne McGregor has long been at the cutting edge of choreography. He has won widespread acclaim for collaborative works that often extend far beyond the familiar boundaries of ballet. For this new production McGregor enmeshes themes from Virginia Woolf's landmark novels, including Mrs Dalloway, Orlando and The Waves, with elements of her letters, essays and diaries. Woolf Works expresses the heart of an artistic life driven to discover a freer, uniquely modern realism, and brings to life Woolf’s world of 'granite and rainbow' where human beings are at once both physical body and uncontained essence. This is McGregor’s first full-length production for The Royal Ballet and sees him reunited with acclaimed British composer Max Richter (Infra and Sum), who creates a specially commissioned score incorporating electronic and live music.

What a great discussion. Bonnie is a huge asset in this role. Her questions are so thoughtful and intelligent, and really draw out insights into the creative process of these thoughtful and intelligent artists.

Frankly, Ms Greer could have said nothing and just let the others have their own conversation. She's way too pretentious and deferential. For example not everyone regards Virginia Woolf as a literary genius, but even if she were indisputably so it doesn't merit the level of sycophantic deference directed at her. Woolf wasn't, and still isn't, everyone's cup of literary tea. Having said that, this new ballet may be something worth writing home about. On another matter, people not exposed to ballet so often seem amazed at the level of trust ballet dancers have in each other. They have to touch each other and move as a part of their everyday work, in ways that outside in a public arena might be regarded as "inappropriate". But it's dancing, and you can't do ballet without close physical contact. The principal tool of a dancer's trade is their body. It's a boring question though and Ms Greer seemed to have trouble asking it directly. Otherwise, without Ms Greer, it was a really fascinating conversation.

pvandck Based on Ms. Greer's questions and the way she presents herself, I have to agree. I hope they don't use her again.

TheDreamtimezzz I suppose she posses a lot of the American exaggerated language such as "Supreme Virginia", very annoying to listen to. I did sense a level of pretentiousness on her part. Just because you know something doesn't mean it's important to all for god sakes!
