David Gene Pearson was an American stock car racer from Spartanburg, South Carolina. Pearson began his NASCAR career in 1960 and ended his first season by winning the 1960 NASCAR Rookie of the Year award.
At his finalist nomination for NASCAR Hall of Fame's inaugural 2010 class, NASCAR described Pearson as "... the model of NASCAR efficiency during his career. With little exaggeration, when Pearson showed up at a race track, he won." Pearson ended his career in 1986, and currently holds the second position on NASCAR's all-time win list with 105 victories; as well as achieving 113 pole positions. Pearson was successful in different venues of racing; he won three times on road courses, 48 times on superspeedways, 54 times on Short tracks, and had 23 dirt track wins. Pearson finished with at least one Top 10 finish in each of his 27 seasons. Pearson was nicknamed the "Fox" (and later the "Silver Fox") for his calculated approach to racing. ESPN described him as being a "plain-spoken, humble man, and that added up to very little charisma."
David passed away November 12, 2018 in his hometown of Spartanburg, SC.

Want to see who n.v the greatest was, research how many times Dale Earnhardt won the championship and how times he finished in the top 5 for the championship, most of the time, he finished 2nd as well...theres alot to be said for that

My Daddy was a big Bobby Allison fan and my brother to. The year in 1976 at Atlanta motor speedway, my Daddy brought himself a Matador Allison cap for him and my brother, and brought me a Wood Brothers David Pearson cap, I became a big fan of Pearson because he talked just like my MaMa and later in life because of his Friendliness, sportsmanship, and he could flat out drive a stock car.... Smoking a Winston just like a Sunday drive...

In about 1994 95 or so my brother and I were in Charlotte Airport waiting to board, sitting in a little eatery, look up and see David and some friends walking by, I said Bobby (my brother) that's DP , you sure he said, yeah its him I said. He went to the baggage claim and was standing alone just waiting on a late Bag so I casually approached him a little nervous but just stuck my hand out and said hello David just wanted to say hello, he shook my hand and was fairly quiet type but cordial to me, said he was returning from a cruise. But he may have been surprised I recognized him being I was only about 33 and not very old when he was in his prime Haha but I told him I was at Darlington in 85 when he drove the Chattanooga Chew car and of course he was soon to retire, but anyway I was thrilled to have talked to the Legend and I will never forget it. RIP Mr. Pearson thanks for all you done!

My son and I went to the Auto Fair at the Charlotte Motor Speedway back in 2012. We were walking around the track, looking at all of the cars that were being displayed there, and suddenly I saw someone that looked familiar sitting by himself under a pop-up canopy near his car. I did a double take, and realized that it was indeed David Pearson. My dad had died just a few months earlier, and DP had always been his favorite driver, so I went up and shook his hand, and congratulated him on being inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame. His reaction was hilarious, and so typical; he said, "Don't pay nothin'." I asked if I could get a picture of my son with him, and he said, "Sure". My son was only about 10 years old, and had no idea who DP was, but it was very special to me. I told him that he had been my dad's favorite driver, but that he had passed away recently, and he was very respectful. I'll never forget it; may he RIP.

I remember driving home to Tennessee and l was in South Carolina listening to radio and they were talking to Pearson and he was telling about going to a race and when they got there and was qualifying that the engine went so they pulled the engine out of the car hauler and changed it in the motel parking lot. I would like to see today's drivers do that and he also shared in the driving of the car hauler to the races.

Petty's overrated. Sure he had 200 wins and 7 championships but he also had way better gear than everyone else. It's as if he was a Hendrick car in a field of RWR cars in the 60s, and in the 70s he was a Hendrick car among a field of Ganassi cars

Yeah you make a good point, the majority of fans today other than those who were watching or mostly listening on the radio in the 70s which I wasn't really familiar with the wins between the two , my older brother is 77 and was an Allison fan but he has told me many times that basically for the percentage of Races that David run compared to the amount Petty ran that David held the higher percentage of wins simply by winning most of the races that he entered so yeah I agree with your comment, you're a veteran race fan I'd say!
