Its hard to believe people are calling this man stupid and dumb; he collected data so that earlier direction can become more common. He did the job people were way to scared to even try once let alone a career. RIP

It's a cruel irony that he was one of the most careful and knowledgeable chasers around and died in such a way.

That is so sad. He was truly a genius. We lost a great team. They have saves so many lives with their early warning research. They gave their lives trying to help others. May they rest in peace.

I cried so hard when I heard the news about these guys. I loved them so much. They did a great job on life and I hope thy have a peaceful life in heaven

I hope Tim's passing sends a message to all of the amateur chasers who go after these things with no other purpose than a thrill and a cool piece of video footage that tornadoes aren't to be fucked with. These guys were trained professionals who knew what they were dealing with and a twist of fate turned nature on them and cost them their lives. Its a risk these people take, so the rest of us can stay in shelter and have better lead time in getting there. RIP Tim, Paul & Carl.

Oh, I loved this guy, he put his life on the line to protect tornado victims and get info, he TRULY had the bravery and balls of steel that none of us could even verge upon. I will always remember him for his awesome show Storm Chasers, You'll be missed.

You guys really screwed up, he died 5/31/2013 and it wasn't an EF3 it was an EF5, and it was the largest, unpredictable tornado ever recorded RIP Tim, Paul and Carl 💜

Sad news indeed as a fellow storm chaser. I was surprised to see this clip today as I watch your videos often as an automotive enthusiast. As a career meteorologist/atmospheric scientist and occasional storm chaser, it was such a sad day losing such a dedicated researcher/engineer. At least he was doing what he loved!

Not to mention the fact that most tornados unless spotted on the ground and called in, will not just magically set of a tornado warning siren. Half of the towns Tim / Reed / TIV / Vortex came up on, had a tornado barreling down on them and hadn't even turned on the sirens until one of them radioed it in. If it wasn't for on the ground spotters, there would be a lot more damage and a lot more deaths.

Hey lets get it right about Tim ! First of all that was the largest tornado ever recorded! That took more courage ,to go find out the science of that beast, just to help mankind, than any man on this planet could ever have! Tim was one of the smartest and bravest men that u can find! Now that that's said also know that the "ef3 , not f3, tornado that u say struck him was technically more like between an ef4 & ef5 . Just because the measurements of debris moved around on the surface of land in elreno are limited doesn't mean that there weren't wind speeds between 200 & 300 mph. Which is more likely what hit Tim's convoy! Let's give him the respect he deserves . That tornado was a damn MONSTER! Tim Samaras and his son Paul and Carl Young are heroes!!! God bless them !

OH what a SHAME! He was always so careful to get in, drop his load and get out. He seemed like a pretty decent guy on "Storm Chasers". RIP guys.... You guys making comments about these people putting themselves in harms way don't understand WHY they're doing it. Tim wasn't out for the adrenaline rush. He was out there for science!!! He was trying to understand tornados and trying to make it possible to predict them before they occur. Have a little compassion!

I seen tim on storm chasers back in 2009-2011 and he knew way more about tornadoes way more than everybody else,i wish i got to meet him but no,the EF-5 tornado in el reno took that away from me,rip team twistex

I watched the Storm Chasers show when it was on the Discovery Channel. Tim was very focused on getting scientific information. R.I.P FYI the date is wrong should be 5.31.13

TO NOTE to the publisher of this video, the tornado that killed samaras has now been upgraded to an EF5 with winds near 300mph and a record width of 2.6 miles which beats the previous 2.5 mile record.

I didn't recognize the name, but hearing he was from Twistex I know exactly who he was. This is so sad, very nice guy.

His car got rolled and thrown over a quarter mile. A roll cage and helmet aren't going to prevent a person's death in such a case. Yes, having a million dollar chase vehicle will help if you get caught in a lesser tornado but if you get a direct hit from an EF5 there is no vehicle on earth that will save you. My guess is that its actually considerably more dangerous to storm chase in a vehicle like TIV because they intentionally try to intercept tornadoes rather than just get close in them.

When the tornado hooked northeast, instead of running to the north, they made the fatal mistake of trying to run east. I frankly cannot understand why they did that. When you run, you put your back to the storm and run at a perpendicular. They were west of a NE running tornado, and ran east...

Such a great man a great researcher that did his job to save people. To improve warning for places which are struck by tornadoes every year. I know not everyone would risk their lives like this for others.

No matter what mistake these guys made, I still respect what they were doing. Hindsight is always 20/20.

I hope he was able to 'wind-tunnel' the tornado and get great data on that and anything else those guys could think of. Eventually, they'll have enough data to maybe slow down or prevent tornados in the future. Kudos to such dedication and sacrifice. RIP

how ironic that what he says about the strong violent large tornados going in a straight line so much that "you could put a ruler on it" turned out to be false, in so much as that belief , turned on him, the tornado that got him ,a violent f-5, the largest In width of any tornado we know of, ended up taking a very unpredictable turn & that is how he got caught up in it. life is strange..very sad such good people..

I can imagine how ya'll guys felt when ya'll heard the news. This past August I heard of a friend who was killed. I hadn't seen him in almost 4 years.

RIP to him and his crew been watching weather since I was 6 back in 1996 after watching hurricane opal still watch the weather channel and these shows they did a lot god bless his family

Tim seemed like a really interesting guy...the kind of guy that I would've loved to sit down and chat about weather related phenomena. He didn't strike me as the "daredevil" type. He must've just got caught in an unfortunate position that he couldn't get out of. With regards to capturing footage of the inside of a tornado....it needs to stop!! It's been done already and you really can't see anything anyway. And its not so much about science as it is about gaining personal attention.

I saw Reed Timmers post on the Anniversary and looked this up. Loved them all in Storm Chasers and this is just so so sad. I still wonder why they were in the car and not the truck.

RIP Tim..... Also, regarding the vulnerability of the windows there is a film you can apply like window tint nowadays that will actually bulletproof glass up to .357 magnum rounds. I spoke to a guy who does that as a business about it when he was tinting my car windows. They mainly only put the film on flat store front windows to prevent smash and grab robberies so I don't know if you could heat them up or stretch them enough to make a tight fit on curved auto glass but it would be worth a try.
