Following the deadly attack in Christchurch, the government launched a national gun buyback scheme, for people who surrender their guns before December 20, 2019.
As part of the tougher gun laws most semi-automatic weapons and high-capacity magazines are now banned. Since the programme kicked off in July, more than 19,000 firearms have been handed in.
But with hunting and recreational shooting popular past-times in New Zealand, the scheme is not without controversy.

Enjoy a gun register. Doesn't help prevent crime whatsoever. We have shootings all the time. But you won't see that on the tellie because every country wants Australia to be the role model country in "gun control". The gun register is put in place to simply make it easier for the government to take your firearms off you when they feel it's right. Just means someone behind a computer will know what firearms you own, how many firearms you own and where they're stored. When new bans are passed... Which they will in time. If you have a registered firearm that the authorities are after you can kiss that goodbye. Say goodbye to suppressors, your pump and semi shotguns, your semi rimfires. Have fun having to get a licence to own an air rifle and paintball gun. Enjoy having 5 different classes of firearms licences and have to sit a course for each one... If you're lucky enough to be granted one. You'll follow in Australia's footsteps and you as a licenced law abiding firearm owner will always be seen as the criminal!

Partying 19k guns as a success is something only politicians can do. Ignoring the fact that these 19k guns are reflecting not even 10% of the overall amount of guns in the country. And not adding a measurable amount of security to anyone.

In what way is this disarming future criminals?? Do you think anyone who wants to commit a crime with their gun is going to line up and hand it over to the authorities? Look at these people! They're like little well-disciplined children! Walking right up with a smile on their face, "Look at me officers! I'm doing the right thing!", thinking they're making their country safer. Most of these people are old guys who have probably been taught to hunt by their father who was taught to hunt by his father. These people are the least likely to commit a mass murder for the sake of some nonsense internet ideology. And yet they're the ones being punished. For something they've never done nor intended to do. Great job, New Zealand. You've just made your citizens sitting ducks.

Stupid rams... Their government has violated all fundamental principles of modern legal state: 1. Inadmissibility of retroactive law. 2. Inadmissibility of coercion to deal (forced sale of guns). 3. Presumption of innocence of legal guns owners. 4. Right to life and home protection, which gives the possession of guns. 5. Principle of personal responsibility instead principle of collective responsibility. My words - for NZ gun right defenders.

19,000 is not many. I've seen more than that at a gun show. That's one smalltown in Texas. The number of guns in the USA is astronomical. A total guessmaybe 200 million. The fact is most people who like guns have a lot of them.

This is a disgusting scene to see by free people who did nothing wrong themselves turning in their weapons. They were already stored and saves and if only you know the code they are under your control. Some psychotic racist decides to kill 50 people and that is your fault? You have a license to on the weapon you pass the background check you haven’t done anything wrong and yet you still turn in your guns? That’s just disgusting. That sort of absolutism may feel good in regards to something you personally don't care about but in reality it can be applied to many things, most of which do far more damage than legal firearm ownership and would inevitably infringe on something that is important to you... This isn't (or shouldn't be) purely a case of keeping the public as safe as possible. It's about finding a balance between keeping the public as safe as possible whilst also allowing a degree of freedom. People have to be able to pursue things in a free society, to find meaning outside an absolute 'need', and unfortunately that isn't without risk. I would imagine very few NZ gun owners are suggesting that firearms are bought off the shelf like loaves of bread etc. But a proper well organised vetting/security/training, system (as per most other western countries) seems to work very well in finding that good balance.

@boss man 91 Apart from that i own a shotgun and apart of the UK NRA, there are no need for the types of weapons in a civilised society. The uk had 2 serious shootings in the late 80s and early 90s and that was all it took for our gun laws to be rewritten. In America mass shooting happen every day almost, this is what happens when you have easy access to weapons with no mandatory training or a background check. The kiwis have got it spot on with getting rid of these types of weapons and strengthening there gun laws
