It hurts when I see Mumbai emerging as the main centre of films in india...it must have been Kolkata with guys like ray.

You can check out Ritwik Ghatak, Mrinal Sen. They too are among greatest Indian directors from Bengal

This thought emerges because you obviously don't have any idea about Dada Saheb Phalke!! Yes Ray and other Bengalis have been great in filmmaking and art. But Mumbai is because of Dada Saheb and Prithviraj!! Also the first Indian Movie was 1913 in Mumbai and 1918 in Bengal

@beefsoup36843 жыл бұрын
@@shuktikanirmal6121 Bengali is not an Indian language. Sure, we used to be a part of the same sub-continent, but Bengali is Not an Indian language. You're confusing the Indian states with Bangladesh as a country. To claim that Bengali is an Indian language would be as ridiculous as claiming that Bangladesh is a part of India. The modern Bengali language was derived from Sanskrit. Sanskrit was the Indian sub-continent's original mother language. It dates back to 1000BC. During the Mughal era, West Bengal, Assam, Tripura and Meghalaya were a part of "Bangla" or "Bangal". Although there was no such thing as Bangladesh back then, that portion of of the sub-continent was known as Bangla. People in those regions still speak Bengali to this day. During the British period, they divided the Indian sub-continent into countries and in the process, we lost a huge portion of our land which would otherwise be known as a part of modern day Bangladesh. So to sum it up, people from those regions are known as "Bangali" and not "Bangladeshi". But do not mistake them as purely Indians. I've noticed how people always try to divide the two nations over silly arguments. And please never claim Bangla as an Indian language again.

LOL Satyajit Ray has won an Oscar for his lifetime achievement in 1992. Though i hardly care about the Oscars. But it should ring a bell. Lets come to national award which is the most prestigious in India. He has won 32 in various category. Then comes his legacy which is unmatched.Nobody in Indian film industry has even comes close to him. Martin Scorsese campaigned so hard that he could get this Oscar. He rallied his close buddies Steven Spielberg, George Lucas and others, which set the ball rolling in Mr. Ray's favor. This event is just one event. He continues to spread the word about Mr. Ray's films. Just stop being ignorant and lazy and start watching his films.

Why just Ray, there have been several equally great directors in Indian Cinema . I do hope that films of directors like Guru Dutt, Hrishikesh Mukherjee , Vijay Anand ( Guide in particular) are made available to US film lovers too, and I dont mean DVDs , there should be proper screenings where ppl can learn something more about these directors and their style via an exhibition, booklets etc.

there is a lot of difference between Ray & others you are talking about...they are just leagues apart ----its like comparing suresh raina to sachin Tendulkar!!please watch his films first & try to understand the difference between Bollywood commercial filmmaking & ray's artistry.i'm sorry but the comment 'equally great directors' speaks volumes about your shallow understanding of films!!

Satyajit Ray maybe a great director/ film maker to foreigners, Satyajit Ray showed Indian lives in poverty, unclean atmosphere, that changed the very outlook of Westerners to the extent India is a poor, poverty stricken, unclean, culturally & religion divided. What did the satyajit Ray showed to westerners a bitter truth, and watching comments very amusing @ some says he was a Bengali, some says he was a Indian, or first Indian to be honoured with Oscar award. Reality is most of Indians don't want to see Satyajit's movies, bcuz Indians wanted to forget their poverty feeling & turned to commercial movies with songs, fights, or any kind of masala.
