Take a hike with Shizuka through Wakayama's ancient pilgrimage trail, the Kumano Kodo. Through the misty mountains and ancient trees, Shizuka explores the hidden restaurants along the way.
Her journey leads to a restaurant made entirely of wood, blending into the forest, where she samples 100% buckwheat noodles. At another restaurant, Shizuka tries a rice bowl featuring fresh deer. Finally, she ends the food tour on a sweet note with hot springs coffee and a gooey-chewy treat. With weary and rain-soaked feet, Shizuka makes it to the trail's end and visits Kumano Hongu Taisha.
FEATURED FOODS:
Soba: A Japanese noodle made from buckwheat
Tempura: deep-fried assortment of mountain vegetables
Shika don: A rice bowl with deer and a raw egg yolk
Local vegetable soup: made from vegetables found in the mountains
Chuka chimaki: a sticky rice ball warped n bamboo
Hot spring coffee: coffee made inside a hot spring
Kinako mochi: chewy mochi served in a soup with kinako (soybean powder)

I really enjoy the way Shizuka-san presents/hosts. It's upbeat and enthusiastic but not too much and she's still honest about the flavor of the foods she tries but never comes across as picky or rude. She's casual but still with manners and style. A lot of other food presenters can really learn from her. She's always pleasant to watch and listen to.

Incredibly beautiful scenery and locations! The rainy weather gave the forest a magical atmosphere. Great photography, too! I like how all the restaurants, cafes, and temples were so well integrated into the surrounding nature. These are the kind of places I really like seeing in Japan. Thanks for showing us!
