I'm looking for unique mechanics, in this one few had a high uniqueness score, but we can see what kind of a difference good implementation and polish can make!

Oh man that last game is definitely giving me 2d Superhot vibes. Loved that game, didn't think a 2d version of it could look fun.

For sure got some super hot vibes. But still unique enough that it didn't feel like a 2d clone, hope you enjoy it! :D

I've played some 2d superhot clones. Some were great and addictive others were underwhelming. Depends on the implementation

I bet that title “filled with freedom” was intentional & the game should be about a liminal claustrophobia & or megaphobia.

alot of games here have too little of an idea. So let's say you were devving the slime game. I'd add gimmicks that complement the mechanic and keep things fresh. For example, since it plays with gravity, I'd add gravity switching, or changing the falling speed/ acceleration. Design by ideas is like color theory in that regard. But there also has to be reasons why you're implementing the ideas, alongside the idea of introducing it at a slow rate to teach information (this is what I'm generally bad at- especially while tackling games that have very abstract thought processes and things like that). One of the best puzzle platformers to borrow from is ElecHead. It even makes use of the resting mechanic, which to me, is a peak game design idea implemented well.

now, there's also connecting ideas to the real world, which itself is tough, questioning about preconceived mechanics like menu systems (asking yourself why a menu system exists, and if a game would do well without it), and kind of sort of looking to change things you hate about games, or find needless in games (such as waiting to fight someone in a turnbased battle and working around something like that) and adding more flair to a game. I feel like the idea of avoiding overscoping at all costs is kind of not great to me, because avoiding overscoping in all cases in a sense derails good ideas. Sure, you shouldn't plan on making a game needlessly complicated to develop with things like open world mechanics, side quests and stuff like that. But also, it shouldn't deter you from building whatever your heart seeks

I also tend to avoid shortcuts that make development automated, such as having premade movement mechanics. There's a lot you can get from basic movement. And I think that we've barely scratched the surface of the many ways a character could control in a game

All good points! I've played a few games without typical game things like menus and its always refreshing to see how they approach things. :)

Hey Artindi, I have created my own Indie Game and just released an Update. Do you think my Game could be something for this format?

Maybe, send me a link and I'll be happy to check it out! (I've mostly only turned down mobile games, or if I have to pay for it, I mean, I would, but I just don't have any budget for it sadly.)

Okay, how can i make a unique mechanic to my game, because i think there isn't lot of them or even none left because i think every "unique" idea has been taken, so how do i make one?
@beidero

Take several existing mechanics and mix them in new and interesting ways or simply take an existing mechanic and build upon it. There are also other things you can do such as simply taking an existing game style and mix it up, such as making it a roguelike, multiplayer or adding some meta progression. In general I personally think you will probably get the best result by taking a game style you love and then trying to improve upon it in ways you find interesting. For example I like 2d roguelike shooting games (eg. binding of isaac, enter the gungeon) but I generally only like them if they got multiplayer. So I am making my own 2d roguelike shooting game with some minor original mechanics + multiplayer.

Vegard Beider has some great points, what I have done usually is as I consider interesting ideas in real life, I ponder about how I could turn that into a game. For example, I noticed most games always run to the right for progression, so I thought, why not make a game all about that, and so the game I'm working on right now features a world eating machine that destroys everything to the left of you pushing you to the right. Or another example is I thought about how in many games the player will kill hundreds of bad guys without any mental repercussions. So eventually I want to make a game around that idea, where potentially you have to harm others to progress, but doing so could cause you stress, depression, or PTSD, and coping with that will be part of the mechanics. Just try to think about interesting concepts or ideas, let your mind wonder and ask questions, then when you have an interesting thought, see if it can be turned into a game. :)

@@Artindi Not gonna lie that idea of developing depression or PTSD because of killing people could actually sound interesting, like balancing between not killing/killing and progressing at the same time and you could maybe develop multiple personalities and maybe the different personalities could have different effects on killing people. Like a psycho who could just kill without any remorse, a sad one who maybe could breakdown and slow it down but could be stronger or something, etc. Like just around that, you could actually build a cool game with a really unique idea.

@@Artindi MGS4 did that in a way, whenever you die in that game you see flashbacks of previous moments throughout your playthrough kind of like a PTSD type thing.

If you owned a billion dollars in gold, but the gold was all in a vault on a island and no one knows about it except you and you don't have proof it's real. What would you do?

I would leave clues as to tell people it exists. And charge the winner with a bajillion dollars at the end. That's what I call capitalism. Then I'd donate a sum to charity, because I'd be tired of capitalism at that point
