Spoilers for Scott Pilgrim Takes Off!!
Taking the main character out of his title role is quite the dice roll. But can it produce something better? I saw Scott Pilgrim Takes Off and it was...something weird. And I love it!!

That last bit about the montage of her hurting people, it's not really her taking accountability for hurting them, because she didn't really hurt Todd either. It's about her quickness to abandon situations, which even though it was just a good thing that she left Gideon, she still probably feels iffy about doing because it's part of the habit.

I agree especially about Gideon. On another video someone made about takes off they talked about how upset it made them when at the end when ramona thinks about how she abandoned her EXs that Gideon was shown with them. I always thought Ramonas struggle with Gideon was how things went unsaid and she still let those things affect her deep down. Like how in the comics/movie she ends up going back to him because he had emotional power over her. Kinda like how Scott let what happened with Envy affect how he treated others, for the worst even since he ends up hurting knives.

I do kinda like what they do with Todd mostly because it seems to me more like a funny play on his character in general. You take the pompus douche preppy jock/cheerleader couple. The kind of people who are 100% straight and make the dude a love sick loser attracted to a gay guy. My favorite line from envy the entire show "YOU BROKE MY BOYFRIEND" I love it lmao

As someone who prefers the original black and white art for the comic, I appreciate it you using that in the video over the colour version!

I noticed in the new series the moment Scott came back and even when Scott was in the first episode. The comedy was amazing the pacing was even better than what it usually is and Scott’s character is just fun to watch wish they did more with him

i don't think Ramona is quite a MPDG in the movie, she's not there to solve Scott's problems, he's there to solve hers. she definitely did have an agency problem and not much of a character arc in the movie however and it's very very cool to see that addressed here. i really enjoyed the series and can definitely see myself coming back to it often. great video, +2 for adding the part about MPDG being a term more recently used to perpetuate misogyny than to critique misogynistic character tropes

I know you've already got a lot of praise but oh my god did you do an amazing job. Your audio, your editing, and your message were all so amazing and it's criminal that this has so few views. This is truly a masterpiece of an essay video and I really hope you are proud of what you have made.

I really, really enjoyed this essay type video!!! Your word usage and outside knowledge of terms or ideas that relate to Scott Pilgrim was super refreshing and just genuinely cool to listen to. I just finished watching the series a handful of days ago, and I needed a video response similar to this one in order to properly COLLECT my takeaways from this adaptation, due to the fact that it’s just so different from all other SP adaptations. (This isn’t a complaint, it’s actually the opposite!) I absolutely LOVE consuming and analyzing media that makes me THINK. Scott Pilgrim Takes Off did just that for me, and this video helped tons!!! Just by itself, the original SP story, (the main story and characterization presented in the comics) contains characters with many, many unique flaws, which sort of drew me to the SP universe in the first place! This new series really dug into those flaws, explained them, and put most of them to rest, if not just really provided a sense of understanding for viewers. This video essay exemplifies this feeling for me personally, and I really appreciate the effort that was clearly put into it. All in all, SPTO was hilarious, emotional, refreshing, and provided me with clarity in a variety of ways for this cluttered, immature universe full of cluttered, immature characters that become not-so immature in the end in their respective ways. And this video essay magnifies that, and displays it in very epic and cool ways!!! Thank you so much for this!! Keep creating!! :)))

Good video man, hope the algorithm gods be with you. Although I don't agree that the show does a better job than the original comics of characterising how it is to grow up, since the show activily takes Scott away and doesn't let him face Knives, Envy, Lisa and Kim personally. But, I see where you're coming from :) I think the wonderful thing about the show is how it maintains the core message of the comics, but says it in a different way.

The last time I read the book series, I was really taken with how the whole series does focus on Ramona and her (possibly self imposed) alienation. Each book (with the exception of the 4th and 6th books) starts with a splash page of Ramona, alone, going about her day. The books are ultimately about her journey of understanding herself and trying to reason with her own toxic tendencies, in the face of the toxic people she has surrounded herself with over the years. So the best part of Takes Off is pushing that theme to the forefront, so her journey is not in the background of Scott's story. The thing that really disappointed me was the lack of Lisa Miller! I saw someone point out that she is in the audience during the Theater scenes, but I actually wanted to see her in the show more, since her character didn't make sense in the movie. I always saw her as a female Scott. You could make an entire second season of this show just based on the side characters in the book.

If I were to have one controversial opinion on this show, while they’re not bad actors by any means I do feel like a lot of the characters personality were carried in the movies by the actors body language while their deliveries were a bit more one note, Scott, Ramona, Wallace and young Neil don’t quite have the same personality or impact as their comic or movie counterparts as their performances are limited to just their voice.
@sammiller8925

my only criticism of the show is that, while old Scott works amazingly well as a foil to young Scott's naivety and general uncaring nature in his overdone cynicism I think it would've been interesting to have seen it be nega scott, a character who didn't get a lot of time to shine in either adaptation and who serves essentially the same role old Scott does in the show in the movie and especially the book.

Old scott and older scott ruined the original despite what anyone says scott grew a lot in the comics and having him just return to the way he was at the beginning of the comics felt like Bryan doesn’t even understand his own characters anymore this is why i think takes off is simply a terrible show
