We explored Evarts Kentucky in the Appalachian Mountains of Harlan County.
most sources credit the 1931 shootout known as the battle of Evarts between striking miners and coal company deputies as the event that probably gave Harlan County the name Bloody Harlan, but there is so much more to this historic little town hidden in the Appalachian Mountains than that, please explore it with us.

So glad I found your channel. My dad's family is from that area. He graduated from Evarts and my grandpas 6 brothers died in the Yancey mine disaster. My grandpa also mined coal. Living across the country I've never had the opportunity to visit the area. Dads been gone for many years but your videos give me a glimpse into his childhood and my heritage. Thank you!

I really wanted to get over to Harlan county a couple weeks ago but I just didn't have time. The closest I got was the Knox drive in barberville and that big pond they had over there. I love all the off roading in Kentucky and I have a built jeep. Thanks for the tour of evarts.

Not sure how old you are, but I lived in Kildav till I was about four. Still owned the place for quite a few years after we moved, but I think that’s awesome.

I drove through Kentucky in the 70s. I knew nothing about the coal industry. I would never have wanted to go into a mine, but it is very interesting to me. Your videos make me feel as though I am walking through the towns and hollers. Keep them coming.. Thanks

Thanks for this video. Our church in OH used to come down and help do repairs on many of the homes for tjose who couldn’t afford to pay. Knew exactly where you were standing at the opening. We put on wuite a few roofs in the Evarts area and as a railfan, I always enjoyed walking around the depot. Love your work that helps people understand the Harlan County history. Last time I recall being in Evarts was shortly after a storm damaged the Dairy Hut. At least the one in Harlan was still open at the time. Returning one more time is on my bucket list.

My mom grew up in Evarts. Her maiden name was Sizemore almost all my aunts and uncles have passed. I still have cousins in the area. My parents moved to Knoxville in 69. I've been up in the many times trying to find my Grandparents home place. I remember going there when I was a kid but I can't remember exactly where it was. My mom moved my grandparents to Knoxville in the late 80s to care for them when they became elderly.

That metal building was the old wood shop class. Attached to the art room. The cafeteria was over to the right where you thought you could walk thru to go back to the front.

I guess it's cheaper in the long run to consolidate schools, but it's kinda sad the little town schools are disappearing... that one didn't look in all that bad a shape. I wonder if the city coukd get it and maybe use it as a storm shelter?
