I was asked by Dan Rudolph how I cut off carbide shanks and Pete Brubaker for some info on our KO Lee grinders. The part number for the Norton diamond cut off wheel that I use is SD220-R100B99E-1/4. (Note: if you do not have a KO Lee the diamond wheel could be used on a surface grinder and any kind of spinning device.)

Thanks for sharing, any and all tool cutter grinder info you can put up would be awesome! There isnt much of any info around on them, if youre looking to expand your channel, that would be a great way to do so quickly.

Alfred Lyon as a very low budget garage hobbyist, manual machine operator, i am leaning towards picking up a cutter grinder. Pretty much to save money on tooling and repair whoops tooling, since its bound to happen, and is happening lol. So maybe start with a basic over view of all the tooling of a well tooled machine? That is one of my biggest questions, what all is out there for them, i see adds for well tooled machines, but the photos are not very detailed, and of course i dont have the money to drop on something that nice. Then maybe some more basic fixturing and setups for common tools? I just saw last night nyc cnc did a tour of your place, cant wait to get home tonight to watch that. Thanks again, DJ

dj berg ok. We have a few Cincinnati no. 2s , a bunch of KO Lees , and then a bunch of converted surface grinders that we use for job specific operations. What kind of machine do you think you will be looking to purchase?

Alfred Lyon theres a smaller ko that i could pick up for cheap, that i am contemplating, but it needs love and has no tooling/accessories at all. But after seeing Jon's tour of your shop, it seems one of the number 2's would be a great all around walk through machines, since they dont seem to be set up for a specific job. Also, its awesome you have your apprentice style hiring process, if you were not on the other side of the country i would be doing anything i could, to get into, and to learn in your shop.

dj berg ok. You can pretty much do the same work on KO Lee and a Cincinnati except that the Cincinnati is not only more rigid but it also offers a multi-position spindle that is fun to explain. I will try to find time to get a video up.

why use a 220 to part off? ive been grinding since "79" all ways used a 100 or a 120
@alfredlyon27

brucegor main reason is that's what we have lying around. We seldom cut off as opposed to buying blanks that are cut to length. The reason for the video was a lot of machinists that follow me on Instagram asked how "I" cut off blanks in a pinch. If I was cutting off blanks in production, which we are not a production shop, then I would order the appropriate wheels and use power rotation and infeed. The point of the video was that if a machinist had basically any diamond wheel , within reason, them they could easily shorten their end mills.

spinning work head buddy then you only feed wheel in!

jandagrinding that can be much harder on the wheel than heavy pass, slow roll. This is why I preface most videos with " here's one way". We definitely have spinning work heads but for manual cut off this is my go to. Having done this operation both ways over my 30 years of grinding I can say that this is my preferred method. Thank You for the input.

Alfred, I too am a tool and cutter grinder and trust me it is faster and easier when the tool is spinning in the opposite direction of the wheel! But, I've only been grinding since 1986. GOD bless!

sorry, my bad, just saying for me that's all! I would never even presume to tell another tool grinder how to grind anything as everybody has their own style! Especially manual tool grinding of which there are few around anymore! GOD bless!

The most efficient way to grind carbide is with flood coolant and a diamond wheel. The carbide grinds like butter. Piddling around with mist coolant is not the way to go. I could cut that carbide blank in half in 5 seconds with flood coolant and if set up properly would not make the mess you're making with the mist coolant. An out of round diamond wheel cuts better is pure bullshit not to mention the crappy surface finish you get. According to your logic that one area of the wheel is going to load up faster so why not use the whole wheel to cut.

Precisely why I titled it, “How I cut carbide off on a KO Lee”. Of course there are better and faster ways but not everyone has access to the “best” way. Also, there are a great deal of interrupted style wheels that are very useful for free cutting roughing work.
