In the Feeding Grounds of the Humpback Whales | Ocean Documentary
In the warm Pacific just off the coast of Maui, a humpback whale mother has paired and given birth to her baby. Now the time has come, whereby she has to take her baby on a 5.500-kilometre-long journey to the feeding grounds off the coast of Alaska. The mother has already lost 30% of its weight, but she still has to constantly feed her calf.
Their destination is in Alaska's south, where the whale mother will hunt herrings with the other humpback whales. Together they create so-called air nets and surround the herrings: This is known as bubble net feeding. Orcas go fishing here for herrings, too, but also hunt down whale calves.
Again and again, prior to each bubble net, one can hear the humpback whales singing. This is drowned out only by the sounds of thousands of seagulls that nest in the cliffs close by. Employing various tricks and much to the consternation of the humpback whales, puffins and northern sea lions attempt to benefit from the prey in the bubble net.
In the south of the bay, belugas have arrived at the salmon rivers, in order to hunt salmon. We manage to dive and capture them on camera.
In contrast to the humpbacks, they are extremely tame and enjoy con-tact with humans. A unique cat-and-mouse game begins.

Need a holiday? Hop on. We’re off. First to Hawaii, then to Alaska and down the West Coast of the US to California. And lemme tell you, the Pacific is not warm in California - neither north or south. I grew up near Malibu and it’s freezing but the waves 🌊 are awesome. Moving on... In the warm Pacific (only in the vicinity surrounding Hawaii), just off the coast of Maui, a Humpback 🐋 whale mother has given birth to her baby. Now, the time has come to take her calf on a 5,500 km or 3417 mile long journey to the feeding grounds off the coast of Alaska. Despite losing 30% of her own weight, she continues to feed her baby the entire way. The destination: the South of Alaska, where the whale mother will hunt herrings with other Humpback whales. Together they create so-called air nets with the objective to surround the herrings. Intention: food. This is known as bubble net feeding. Orcas go fishing here for herrings too, but also hunt the baby humpbacks. So it's a treacherous time for the Humpback mothers. Feeding and caring for their babies. One can hear the whales singing although sometimes drowned out by the sound of thousands of seagulls nesting on the nearby cliffs. Puffins and sea lions try and take advantage of the prey in the bubble net. Free Food! In the south of the bay, Belugas have arrived at the salmon rivers. The divers capture amazing imagery of these creatures on camera. Compared to the humpback, the Belugas are rather sociable creatures i.e. tame and enjoy contact with humans. A unique encounter. Unforgettable. And just plain awesome. Worldwide except GAS(Germany, Austria, Switzerland) #freedocumentary #nature

Great job guys!! This was a beautiful documentary about such beautiful animals, It's videos like this that enable people to learn the sad truth about what harm we're doing by over fishing and hunting and gives people knowledge and motivation to change our ways with the goal of preserving land and marine life. Everyone always thinks, "Well I'm just one person, I won't be able to do anything" but the problem is, there MILLIONS of us saying that!! So yes, one person can make a difference, I know we need to eat, so change can be done one step at a time. The fish and game association has laws for a reason, follow the guidelines on what you can hunt and what you can fish, how many fish or animals you can hunt and when you can do it legally, that alone would help so much, then hopefully we can widen our goal to start working on global warming and trying to bring animals that have been labeled endangered back to a healthy population so there not endangered anymore!! Sorry for the rant I just love seeing Documentaries like this especially free ones because it opens people's eyes to the truth and change starts with knowledge.

Amazing documentary. Love Ocean life. Anyone else believe there weren't actually sharks in the same place as the whales thou at 13:45? Both the tiger and whitetip sharks never enter the same shot as the mother or calf whale. The whitetip even appears to be recorded with a different camera. Just curious. :) Still amazing documentary. I once called my trips to processing in King Cove & Bering Sea a paid vacation trip. Unfortunately seems downhill population of pollock & herring are facing poisoning as well as over fishing. Ask fishermen of threat of to stellar sea lions despite fines, they will pay. Have witnessed orca & humpback feeding techniques. Didn't know humpback use bubble blowing as well, as supposed krill eater. Never heard of blue whale in inside passage. Need more research on this. Awesome memory clip!

The documentary says that the Sperm Whales head is 54ft long and is just a 1/3 of its body length, but that is incorrect.
@AngelusBrady
@AngelusBrady 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah. If 54 feet is one third its length, then that means the total length is over 160 feet long. The largest ever Blue Whale was measured at 98 feet. On average they are smaller. And that's the biggest animal to have ever lived. This documentary series have gotten a fair amount of things wrong. And some things the narrator has said in different episodes makes me feel they approach from a creationist standpoint.

Hi, This documentary about Humpback Whales are amazing! I am music producer and I made a song to remember my mom who would like to have been a Marine Biologist, but she needed one more discipline to conclude the course, unfortunately it was not possible to finish the course due to other factors and along the way never came opportunity to achieve it. The song (music) I already made, has whale sounds (my purchased licensed sounds), birds and owls. I compose it with several synths in Ableton Live. But for the video I need only 2 minutes footage (no sounds). The idea is to honor All Wildlife and Marine Biologists! Can I use some of your footage and publish on KZfaq my music with reference to your documentary? Thank you

What isn't mentioned is that narwhals, bowheads, and beluga whales are hunted by native Americans and Canadians in North America. First Nations in Canada kill about 100 narwhals and 600 to 700 belugas each year. Native Alaskans kill between 300 and 500 beluga per year between 40 and 70 per year bowheads each year.

My question is why do they keep making it seem like the single sharks are an issue for this baby it was born at 15 feet in over a ton a tiger shark is not gonna do anything to it and any other kind but tiger bull or great white has zero chance. most of the sharks aren’t even bigger than it’s fin. I guess they’re just trying to add intrigue but if you know the ocean if it’s not a killer whale chances are it’s going to be OK
