This ending hurts more than the original one Atleast in this one, the audience understands that both are in love with each other yet unable to meet due to fate This one is soul crushing, heartless and cold

Actually I think this scene would have been consistent with the original ending, although perhaps this re-encounter is unnecessary in the context of the film and it was indeed better to leave this out. It's crushing and possibly even sadder, but not heartless. By her reply that she "doesn't remember", Mrs. Chan is telling Mr. Chow that she would rather forget and let it pass instead of re-open the wound and let out all those emotions she's tried hard to get over. Part of it may be just timidity - Mr. Chow plucked up the courage in the hope of breaking through that barrier, to grab what might be the last chance for all he knew, but Mrs. Chan retreated. We know very little about her relationship with her husband but in those days, it was shameful to divorce and she chose to stay with her husband and be a good wife as best she could, as she was expected to be.

The original ending fits the film more perfectly, in the original ending, there is no hints that Mrs. Chan is still together with Mr. Chan, as even the neighbor says that only a woman and her child lives in the apartment, it leaves us with the thought that they may still be in love with each other. However in this ending, it evidently shows that Mrs. Chan had moved on and forgotten about her past with Mr. Chow, while Mr. Chow is still in love with her.

You should adjust the translation especially for the part where she leaves. When the friend calls for Mrs Chan, Mr Chow says “I won’t keep you. If there’s an opportunity, I’ll see you again”. Mrs Chan then says “I’ll see you again” and starts to walk away. “I’ll see you again” is the literal translation of goodbye in Chinese but in this scene he means it literally”

They have a a deleted scene chronologically in the 70's. Though it probably took place before this within the context of the film. The deleted scenes I saw in Critereon. The four scene are a sex scene, Mrs. chan perspective in singapore, 1970's Lulu forces Tony Leung to say hi to Mrs chan again, and then this scene.

this is a kinder ending with closure, the theatrical ending hurts a lot because he has gone years with a secret, no closure, and is finally at a point where he has to let his secret go. And implied that su left her husband with a child and the possibility that the affair led to their child. This ending is like they have a mutual understanding and can move past their feelings. The og theatrical version devastated me, always in the right place but wrong time. that’s a pain I don’t ever wanna experience, at least here they had an opportunity to speak and respect each others life choices.

This ending doesn't really fit with the overall mood and tone of everything that happened previously in the film (although this edited/alternate material explains why the film ending is suddenly in Cambodia for some reason). The notion of "i got over my past romantic flings" as a summarizing conclusion that worked in Chungking Express, but I don't feel like it works here at all. Without this ending, the whispered secret really is powerful. I think one interpretation is that the whispered secret is his unspoken grief and tragedy that he has carried so long. But when I watched the film (without this additional piece) I felt his secret may also include some remorse/ doubt / what-if. Much of this film creates a sense of entrapment, and by extension a sense of fate, but there are also many points with will, agency, and choices. Without this alternate ending, we may consider times he could have acted differently and received a more favorable outcome. We all reflect upon things we maybe should have done differently. Furthermore, some people expect that life has "moments of closure" but in reality, we usually don't, and our present is thoroughly shaped by our past. The past doesn't change and disappear with a some final, concluding act that ushers in a totally distinct future. It is our job to reconcile the tensions that lie within our past, and accept our disappointments, failures, and imperfections along with the joys and successes. This alternate ending would have destroyed all that sentiment, which is an alternative interpretation, but doesn't seem to jive with her previous behavior.

I think this is a perfect example of an edit. This scene isn’t in the OG but man it’s an impossible cut to make. The delivery of the ‘I have forgotten about it’ line where you can see a perfect display of duality of thinking in the micro expressions of Maggie Cheung. To leave that on the cutting room floor is the kind of decisions that a director should aspire to.

I find it very interesting, but despite everything, I remain ambivalent. This scene gives meaning to the act of burying his secret, which I found anecdotal in the original version. This time, we can imagine that he buries his secret because he has just seen her again, and all hope vanishes with her. On the other hand, I still have an issue with the highly improbable coincidences of meeting in the middle of nowhere in films or stories. In the end, a nice alternative, but the original version leaves more room for everyone's imagination.

@clarayuen1273 Жыл бұрын
Not quite - you can see Mrs. Chan hesitated in her reply and there were emotions that flicked through her face and shown in her body language despite her attempt to suppress them. Between the lines was really, "Mr. Chow, we both know and it's in our hearts, but what's past is past and let's not go there again." It was more of a choice to "forget" because, in her mind, it just couldn't be.

I am gonna respectfully disagree with some that this is a more painful ending. Either ending is painful for the man. They have strong romantic feelings for each other, but they will never get to be together. The reason why I see this as a less painful ending is because, at least he got to see her one last time, he saw that she is well, she is still with her husband, and now has a child. She has continued with her life, and if I were in his shoes, I would do the same with mine. Id also tell my secrets to that hole, leave it there and let it all go. This way I do not have to move forward with my life thinking about how she is doing. But of course if you have seen 2046 you know that is not what he did. The original ending is hurtful because he never really got any closure from her. He got one phone call but she never got to hear what she has to say. Even a "Sorry, I am calling you to tell you that this is the last time you'd hear from me" would have hurt yes, but at least it is some closure. Its better than wondering what she really wanted to tell you. What hurts even more is that in the end, she was just actually right next door. You could have knocked and maybe you would have gotten proper closure and move on. For me, the most painful thing about their emotional affair was not even that they could never be together. It is that they never got any closure.
