Hyper mile-ing can be fun!...10 years ago I used to play on a 17 mile circular route with my 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid. My results 76-78 MPG. Normal driving 45 MPG. The route had: hills, stop lights, other cars, and I drove at posted speeds. I accelerated slowly, tried to time the lights, no AC, etc. I usually did this at night to reduce traffic. I loved that car! Put 210,000 miles on it and it still ran like new! In the 11 years I never had any issues with the batteries....My wife averaged 42 MPG in that car (Lead foot!) P.S. - that car made me a better and more calm driver.

You are right. I think hypermiling calmed me down, helped me learn patience, and it turned into a game. Like Sam said the concept is different with a EV as the speeds for optimal range with electric motors is much much slower, but it still sounds like fun! 🙂

My Bolt EUV is my 7th EV. On a few occasions, with other EV's with shorter range, I missed my planned charging station. I just slowed down to 45 MPH, the slowest you can go on a freeway in the US and the range got much better. On one occasion, I was able to drive almost 30 miles with a stated range of 15 miles. Speed and downhill are the factors. On another trip, another car, I was down to 33% battery at the top of our infamous "Grapevine" (I-5 from Bakersfield to Los Angeles, which climbs about 2,500 feet in 8 miles). Even though the range estimator showed 45 miles, I was able to drive the almost 65 miles to my home where I have a level 2 charger. It was down to "turtle" mode, but I made it home. Learning how to drive an EV, it's possibilities is the only way to understand the experiene beyond reports, charts and information.

I am an owner with 20K miles on the car as of last week. If I drove the car at 70 MPH I would not get 259 miles out of the car. I charge at 80% and the Electric Miles is at 257 this morning. I drive to and from work which is 60 miles a day. After 4 days, I was down to 17 Miles remaining. A pretty good estimation from the Electric Miles estimate. When I charged the vehicle fully at 100% the vehicles estimation was 320 miles. I did not test that one down to 15 miles but was tempted to. Winters were hard pressed to get more miles, after a charge of 80% the Electric Miles measured to 160 miles & that was in 20 below 0 Fahrenheit.

I find this very hard to accept but these guys are long term EV owners of the Nissan Leaf and Chevy Bolt, anyway my quick question to you is, have you noticed a longer process to DC Fast charge the bolt for that first 100 miles of range which is advertised to be capable of doing so in 30 minutes, (weather permitting)

I took my Bolt EUV on a recent trip to Shenandoah National Park. The morning we were leaving the park, the estimated range was 255 miles. By the time we drove 53 miles to the park exit, the orange had increased and it was only after 80 miles that the estimated range was back at 255. The park has a 35 mile speed limit and there are a lot of hills, but very impressed with the region. Didn't check the max and min estimates, but suspect these must have been a little lower after 80 miles or I would be breaking the laws of physics.

My used 2019 Bolt leaseback purchase(bought it last September with only 16k miles on it for $15k…it was a pandemic-leased car which explained the low mileage)gets over 300 miles per charge on a regular basis. If it’s mostly highway miles, it’s still a respectable 240ish. The one-pedal regenerative braking works REALLY well on these cars. I commute about 15 miles each way from home to work, mostly city driving, and it typically only uses about 12-17 miles of range both ways. I seriously love these cars. I got one for my wife, too, and she very happy with it.

I leased a 2020 BOLT that had factory heat blocking windows. Heaven! The car was cool in 100F+ weather and the air conditioner barely ran. I bought a 2023 EUV with normal glass windows. Hell! The sun heated the car so much the AC ran full blast even on mild days. Ceramic window tint on the back windows has helped a lot and I plan to add more tint. From my experience, the type of windows will make a big difference in car range because of AC use. If I ever buy another car, factory heat blocking glass will be a necessary feature.

This year 2024 I purchased a new 2023 EUV Bolt to save money, my daughter opened a business that is 72 miles away round trip. She was driving a Lexus and spending around $40.00 in gas every 5 to 6 days. We charge the car at home and the cost is a fraction of the cost of the gas. Have driven the car around town with the one peddle driving and drove 28 miles and all but 1 mile was on regen electricity. The only thing I don't like about the car is it does not have adaptive cruse control, I was told that it did and it did not. GM should make adaptive cruse control standard on all cars for real safety. I love the Chevy Volt it was just to small.

They got the extra range by using Shell electricity - with PLATFORMATE! They had gasoline range competitions back in the 60's and they would hypermile a 1962 Chevy Impala and get 300 miles per gallon - by removing the seats, the dashboard, the light bulbs, the glass, the spare and jack, replace the transmission with a straight gear and idle along at 18mph.

You can look up the record that was set in the Model 3 was done the same way. I think the speed on a closed loop track was like 25-26mph or something. Very similar results. If you are patient and like to play the game when driving hypermiling can be fun. No doubt the Bolt as lower speeds is very efficient and it appears to regen even more aggressively than the Tesla Model 3 so it recoups more energy when backing off. The Bolt also gives you the option to run in drive mode which allows coasting when that is beneficial and you still have a regen paddle on the steering wheel to pull in more regen power when you want it and want to slow down. The Bolt is pretty flexible.

This is actually not a mystery. Any EV can likely get close to doubling its range in this manner. An example of range extension with a Model Y was going from northern New Mexico north through the east central mountains of Colorado--with two mountain passes--on a regular trip. The screen on the Y specified that I not exceed 55 mph or risk NOT getting to the next charger--there was that much distance between them and no alternative on this route. There were places I went a bit slower to gain some percentage (of residual charge at the next stop) so that I had some reserve if I wanted or needed it for passing or playing. The trip was slower, obviously, but otherwise just fine. Could have gone much further by going much slower. It is simply an EV strategy when necessary or useful and works on all.

On the freeway, a good balance in low-battery situations between conserving energy and not making other drivers mad is to just stay in the right lane, obey the speed limit to the letter, and don't pass anyone (not even semi trucks). Going 20 mph in a 70 mph zone is usually way overkill (and dangerous/illegal).

Most drivers are terribly inefficient operators. All gas and brake. People get upset when the very conservative EPA MPG 'Estimates' are not met by their new vehicle. To understand the problem just look in a mirror. I'm a big fan of EV's and Bolts. Greatly enjoy and appreciate your honest, rational, commonsense posts. 👍👍

Agreed. Just watch people accelerating when the light turns green, or stopping when they come to a red light. Most drivers seemingly put their foot to the floor tearing away from the light and hold the pedal there until both feet are on the brake pedal flirting with ABS when it comes time to stop. In addition to how that kills your mileage, it also wears out tires and brakes.

Hypermiling is interesting if you have the time, good weather, good traffic conditions and patience. I can attain better than 7.5 miles per kWh in a standard ZE50, which gives 490 miles of range. But with ordinary careful driving, 5.7 is easy to maintain if motorways are avoided, giving about 295 miles of range. That's an easily attainable improvement if 50 miles more than the official range; Renault reckon that the car can manage 4.7 miles/kWh, giving a range of about 245 miles. This kind of range extension, about 20%, should be possible with any vehicle, whether it's electric or fossil-fuelled.

What was the miles/kw ? I routinely get 6 on my Bolt in city driving. I used to Pulse/Glide in my Prius which was very effective (ie go up to 55 coast to 45 ,repeat) but not sure it works as well on a EV?, amazing how just being observant on red lights in the distance and slowing down to time their switch to green helps efficiency and get to your destination at the same time. AC is a big draw. I accelerate down hills and reduce the speed going up.. Most efficient speed in an EV is probably 15 mph.. tough to do.

In real life use, the regen is where it's at. Mountain driving, this thing tosses back in some serious miles. The down/uphill regen to loss ratio is insane. Uphill, same loss as a gas car, but dh it tosses in way more miles than you're driving. My friend lives in a town 75 miles away, and I use 0 miles on the way back from his house, and use about 100 to get there. That's 66% increase in range (I think ha ha) over the meter, and I'm driving hard. Probably be 100% if I took it easy. Again, I think, I suck at math.

My 2023 Chevy Bolt is making a crazy noise while charging on a level 2 charging at home. Any one know why? Sounds like maybe the fan but really loud

All cars use less energy to drive the slower they go, regardless of power source, because the biggest energy drain is pushing air out of the way of the car, which increase logarithmically with speed. However, a gas car loses efficiency when it has to go into a lower gear because an ICE has internal friction that increase with RPMs, so its max range is going to be the slowest it can go while being in the highest gear (and if its an automatic - while locking up the torque converter). Since an EV only has one gear, that means it _always_ gets more range by going slower. When I get stuck going through my little town (25/35 limits) during the (infinite) road construction, I wind up with 6+ miles per kWh - cause my average speed drops to like 12. You could probably get 1,000 miles on a charge by driving at 8mph, if you could survive the road rage and werent using any accessories (especially heat; and doubly so if the mfr didnt spend the extra $8 to make the A/C function as a heat pump).

You don'thave to drive at low speed. it's call maintaining on a constant speed 65 mph or 70mph using less kw in the freeway or highway, use cruise if you have to.Have not tested 75mph yet though. You can do 30-40 mph on a 25 mph city, but you must stay on that speed to get the lowest kw and make sure to use regen. Simple. Just got my euv and now at 295 range..

An EV fights wind resistance, and at lower speed it's less. A ICE is geared to run most efficiently in top gear, and that's above 40 MPH or so. Non-hybrids have no regenerative braking, so stop and go traffic at low speed and many gear changes really ruin the MPG.

They should sell this car in Asian countries like India, Indonesia, etc at $20k and it will sell like hotcakes. They all have slow charging anyway.

Not long ago I pointed out the hypermiling of that Mercedes EV to get to that 600 miles/1000 kilometers and a commenter went ballistic on me. "That's perfectly normal! That's the way people drive in Europe! Where are you from!" He went on, and on, and on. I let him be. Could have been someone from Mercedes, I suppose.

Hypermolling is well known among EV enthusiasts. It is good that GM promotes this concept to journalists, not just EV journalists. I just do not expect this rate at a speed of 30 km/h. This is the fastest legal speed for ebikes. Not easy to pedal at this speed for hours. Just imagine how a gearless hub wheel motor car can manage. Should be 10-20% more efficient.

As long as you go faster that the avg speed of the town. You will never be any later than , driving like an idiot. I crawl at 40 in 50s. People pass me at 60 and I just, Roll up to them at the red light. I keep it then rolling and just back to the cruise speed. I’m not holding anyone up as I’m faster than the avg speed. . The avg speed of my work day is 21 kph. 30kph on 60 traffic lighted controlled dual carriageways.

Downhill, with a tail wind, on a straight road of glass, with no one in the car! These manufacturers all play the same game whether it's an ICE vehicle or electric...they never get the advertised mileage.

Sam really? I mean.. this exercise was as contrived as anything.. like.. who drives at 20 mph except in neighborhoods. I suspect the vast majority of people have to commute a certain distance for daily life and in the process adhere to higher speed requirements.
