Joe’s back with a pre-war Martin guitar in need of some TLC.
This 1937 D-18 has seen a lot of playing and some questionable fretwork. On today's ‘In The Shop’, Joe will give us an overview of this well-loved instrument, and begin his repairs with an up-close look at patching the bridge plate.

Wow, a pre-WW2 Martin D18! That is THE Holy Grail of acoustic guitars, in my opinion. FWIW, my daily player is a D18E Retro, which has the many of the same specs (forward x, scalloped bracing, etc.) and I LOVE it. That bridge plate tool from StewMac is really cool, too. I’ve never seen one before, but what a genius idea; especially when you compare it t the difficulty of removing a bridge plate. Great stuff, thanks.

Perfect demonstration of Dan's BridgeSaver toolset. Just what I'll use on my 5-18 from 1954.

Wow, what a beauty! Interesting "fret job" but worse guitar crimes have been committed, i suppose! Can't wait to see the final product!

Not that crazy - there was a time you couldn't just order some fret wire online - so top frets worn - swap them for bottom frets.

Should I slot the bridge of my new Eric Clapton ooo-28??

The guitar comes with slotted bridge pins, so there's no need to slot the bridge unless you're considering converting it to unslotted pins.

Now that's a Martin....1937 D18.. How does that one sound like? 1-3/4" nut? Chunky neck profile? F.S scalloped bracing?

We'll give it a strum or two in the final episode. It probably started out 1 3/4", but is now worn a full 1/32" narrower. Neck is "standard, not chunky" at nut and tapers to chunky from 9-12th fret. Scalloped forward X bracing. -Joe
