In the shop with Travis Wuertz: If you make knives, this video may change your life.

Here in Dallas Texas, Jerry Moen invited Travis Wuertz into his shop to discuss a few innovations that Jerry wants to release publicly. On top of that, Travis packed his prototype grinder into his suitcase and flew down to demonstrate this incredible new system. Both Jerry's innovations and Travis's system may forever change how custom knives are ground. Imagine performing a FLAWLESS hollow grind, one handed, and in a small fraction of the time it takes you to do it currently. Imagine also a system on your existing grinder that will allow you to grind up to say a 2000 grit/full mirror with a flawless finish AND do it in merely a few MINUTES. All of this and more will be demonstrated here, and you can expect to see these available to the public sometime in 2017.
These innovations may change how you make knives forever.

That's amazing, I've been a knife maker for over thirty years now and have built several 2X72 grinders which are the traditional knife grinder. The biggest problem to master I've found with these grinders is learning to grind on the opposite side of where your looking and I'm sure knife makers know what I'm talking about. Another problem older knife makers have and I'm in my mid 60's now is light, trying to illuminate the back side of something you really cant see anyway is a problem, this grinder solves both of those issues! I just wish something like this was available thirty years ago,..well done sir!

Great narration Jim. Love the new techniques that the mini TW set up lets you do , like attacking the plunge in a circular motion, and advancing grits on all 4 grinds with absolutely no set up.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for sharing this! It HAS changed my life! I will buy one of these little grinders one day but I couldn't wait to try this grinding technique. It has helped me SO SO much! It is genius. I am now confident I shouldn't have any more scrapped blades instead of around 1.5 per knife on average in the past:) I made a "micro adjustable" measuring tool rest design to be able to do this precisely on my KMG and would love to send you the CAD drawings to give Travis some ideas (i'm sure he already has something in the works, that is one smart dude.) Just want to give back to the community I have learned so much from.

I want one of Travis' new grinders! I have two of Travis's TW-90 and feel they are the best grinders on the market. Travis is a great person to deal with and he really knows how to design grinders. I don't think his new grinder will help me grind faster than I already do, but it will help me do a better job on double edged knives like a dagger. It is very controllable and precise. Travis, I want one. Please put them into production!

Had to come watch this again; it's very cool. Jim, do you know if Travis has figured out a way to grind folder blades with this yet, or rather how to securely hold on to them while grinding? I know most guys use vise clamps and/or a jig to hold them since they have almost no tang to hold on to, but obviously those two options wouldn't work with this granite grinding set up. I don't make folders at the moment, although it got me curious as I'm sure that would also be a good part of the market for these grinders. I was thinking you could leave the bar stock longer until you grind the bevels, but that would either end up wasting steel or making the milling/drilling step possibly more complicated for guys that already have their own processes down. Just wondering :)
@garethbaus5471
@garethbaus5471 5 жыл бұрын
You could try grinding two folders on opposite sides of the same bar using the technique shown then cut out the tangs afterwords to help give you a larger reference surface when grinding while wasting less steel then would otherwise be the case.

I'm completely unknowlageable in the skill of knife making however I can see that Travis' grinder really simplifies things. IMO it eventually raises the bar for some in the trade if they want to stay competitive. What I'm curious about is what brand are the grinders that Jerry is using, the 2x72 s? They look like a quality machine I would have interest in.

I guess that Travis will put a knob on that height adjuster, and if you use a Trig calculator to calculate your bevel height, you'd just use a caliper or height gauge to dial in the height (with the belt on probably).
@lsubslimed
@lsubslimed 7 жыл бұрын
jimmyhendrix87 Good ideas. Especially measuring with the belt on. It can be tricky with grinding hollows sometimes because the radius can change quite a bit from belt to belt, such as if you were using a thin 220 j weight belt and then switched over to a thicker gator belt next, which can cause your bevels to have multiple facets as opposed to one smooth hollow. I personally don't hollow grind any of my blades but I have seen a couple makers experience this issue before they found the right sequence of belt types and grits that works for their process. Anyway, that was just something that came to my mind while watching this.
