Bach Masterclass: Sarabande from Suite No. 6 - Musings with Inbal Segev

Hello Cellists,
Violoncello piccolo? Viola pomposa? Today on Musings with Inbal I’ll share the Sarabande from the sixth suite. Though it was written for a 5-string instrument, my lesson is adapted for a 4-string cello with particular attention to the tricky fingerings.

Rolling the chords is a great tip in here! I was discussing this with my teacher on the other day, whether we should break or roll the chords depending on the cello suite or the moviment, and she has a similar approach of yours in this regard. This piece is very expressive and really elevated. I heard this on a 5 strings instrument, it was very beautiful. But I have the impression that the adaptations with the 4 strings cello works really well, and requires creative solutions on string crossing and fingers. This is absolutely beautiful! I love the double stops on the bars 16 to 22, they are kinda melancholic but contain plenty of lyricism! Thank you so much for sharing this! 🙏🏽❤️🎶 PS: I have the Barenreiter’s urtext edition for the Cello Suites! It is really great!

Hi Ivan, thanks very much for writing. I am so glad that my musings helped. Since I posted the video I continued learning and speaking with historically informed Baroque players and learned that sometimes (we discussed the 5th suite) the right choice might be playing the chords two strings at a time and not necessarily rolling them, so I guess the biggest take away is that there are so many ways of playing and our task as performers is questioning and exploring, which is exactly what you are doing. Hello there, lots of Cellists are getting 5 String Cellos because they're much more affordable these days. The Luis and Clark makes Carbon Fiber instruments and the 5 String Cello will be your next one. You can just travel with the 5 String Cello and leave the other one at home when going to concerts, and there are some reasons why a 5 String Cello could make things alot simpler, 1) the higher notes for all cello pieces (including the 6th suite) can be played more easily on the High E String (which is an octave below the Violin E String), 2) it has much more resonance and sustain, 3) anything written for the Violin can be played on the 5 String Cello like Bachs Violin Concertos.

@@Inbalsegevcello There's a good reason why a 5 String Cello might be the next Cello cause you can read Violin sheet music and play it all down an Octave on the 5 String Cello since it has a High E like the Violin.

CircuitsAndStrings 2 Mr Stern I rarely play works for violin because I find they sound better on their intended instrument but there are exceptions.

@@Inbalsegevcello I think Violin works sound better on the 5 String Cello down an Octave because the lower octave is much more calming.
