Everybody saying it takes balls of steel to be a rally driver, but what about the co-driver? I think it takes steelier balls to put your trust, life and wellbeing in another person's hands.

Best onboard in a long time - truly shows the courage and skill of these drivers. I love the wide angle, seeing the driver's hands and feet and the co-driver's notes while at the same time having a great view of the road. Excellent!

I have a question for someone who knows rally cars. So obviously this is a sequential shifter. But why do drivers still use the clutch from 1st to 2nd to 3rd gear? Shouldn't the clutch only really be needed for launch and hairpin turns?

Great onboard, thanks. But a question: why is it necessary to use clutch to shift 3rd after the left hairpin at 1:44?

mugglerider to keep the engine higher in the powerband.
@defkatpunk9 жыл бұрын
mugglerider after rewatching it again, he appears to be just respooling the turbo, it looks mor elike a clutch blip
@TorAndreBrresen9 жыл бұрын
Joe Dupuie mugglerider Just using the clutch in the lower gears to save the gearbox a little since it was a borrowed car on a low budget, they normally drove a Fiesta R2 at this point but moved up to a Fiesta R5 the next year.
@mugglerider9 жыл бұрын
Tor Andre Børresen Thanks for the info (both of you :). So it wouldn't be necessary to use clutch, but they try not to use the gearbox too hard. Good luck for the R5...we are waiting for great onboards ;)
@Nick-zp1dw8 жыл бұрын
+Tor Andre Børresen wait, do they have a double clutch or so? i dont know that much about it :3, but how come they only have to use the clutch in the low gears? :3

Write please is it hard to rotate the steering wheel on this car, do you need a lot of effort? Very interesting is the difference in effort with game steering wheels for car simulators.
@Qu4DSprayz8 жыл бұрын
can someone tell me why he flicks the wheel during braking/downshifting? is that just him countering the feedback from the wheel? or is it something with that car in particular. great run by the way, thanks for uploading :)
@DavidKFZ8 жыл бұрын
The thing about rally is that when you've gotten the basics mastered and have developed a technique it mostly comes down to feel when driving the car which means he is doing it automatically without thinking, the subconscious takes over and uses muscle memory to make judgments. His hands moving as fast as they are and erratically is typical for fast stages with loose surfaces or portholes. His body will be perceiving tyre slip so his hands subconsciously move to correct it through the learned behaviour. To answer your question: when he brakes, the car will automatically begin to oversteer (fishtail) because the rear tyres have lesser load on them than the fronts and they can pivot more freely in the gravel, he is fighting to correct the car and is keeping it from spinning out. If you watch tarmac rallies you will notice that this doesn't happen as much because the grip type is different and its all about being smooth - the road doesn't pull at the wheels and you are sliding much less meaning no need for corrections
