Thanks so much for making this video! Very helpful! One questions; are there parts of this tour where you're super close to the edge of the mountain? I'm fine to hike, but if it's like a cliff edge situation, I get really bad vertigo. Super grateful for the advice. Thanks! Jess :)
@explorinwithlaurin
@explorinwithlaurin 7 ай бұрын
HI Jess, there may be a few brief spots you don’t like where the trail is going perpendicular across a steep mountain face, but I don’t recall any true “cliff” edge situations. For the most part there is really lush vegetation on either side of the trail that is absolutely beautiful. There are also some steep steps that you have to go down-on those I would recommend you just go down slow and sideways. The guides are also fantastic and I am sure they will stay with you in case anything triggers your vertigo unexpectedly. This really was the best hike we have ever been on and we hope that you enjoy it too! Safe travels!

Awesome video, super informative and helpful! Question- how much is typical to tip the porters? I’m going in a month with Alpaca expeditions as well and I’m still not certain on how many soles I should get before going.
@explorinwithlaurin
@explorinwithlaurin 5 ай бұрын
They advise you tip 10-15% of the tour price and divide that between the guide, chef and porters allocating more to the chef and guide. We a bit more than recommended because they took such good care of us!

@explorinwithlaurin
@explorinwithlaurin Жыл бұрын
Thank you, Dawn! Yes-our tour operator stored all our luggage for us while we hiked! They picked us up and took the luggage to a storage facility and provided it back to us upon return to Cusco. You have to take the train from Machu Picchu to Ollantaytambo then the tour operator bussed us to our hotel in Cusco (and gave us the luggage back) The permits were secured by our tour operator within a couple days of us booking the tour! Hope this helps! Let us know if you have other questions!

We are looking at late November to hike. How far in advance did you book? The rain/ mud has me concerned. Did your boots get very muddy (thinking of the extra weight climbing day 2) . Also how slippery downhill we’re the descents w/ rain? Thanks!!
@explorinwithlaurin
@explorinwithlaurin 10 ай бұрын
We booked 3 months out so you should definitely look into booking soon as they do fill up! Luckily, the trail is stone steps/path 80% of the way and there is good irrigation around the path which generally keeps it not so muddy! The downhill is steep but again it’s steps so generally not slippery but we’d still recommend to take it slow! We did this hike late November (over thanksgiving) and except for a few times in the morning we didn’t have to hike in rain too much!

@explorinwithlaurin
@explorinwithlaurin Жыл бұрын
You will have to go without a shower for at least 3 days! There is an option for a shower on the last night but it’s not heated and without power to dry my hair I just skipped it. I was really nervous about it too but you do get hot water every morning and night so that plus wet wipes and dry shampoo and I felt cleaner than expected on day 4!

How many porters did your group have, and how was tipping done at the end of the hike? Did you tip each porter individually or as a group?
@explorinwithlaurin
@explorinwithlaurin Жыл бұрын
Hi Ian! We had 10 porters for our group of 4 plus a guide. The tour gives you an envelope to put the tips in for them to distribute but we opted to hand ours out individually on the last night of the trek to thank each on personally for all they had done! The tour companies will give you guidelines on a tipping range based on your tour. However, we thought the range they gave us was a bit low opted to do a little more!
