K&N DO NOT offer better filtering over standard O.E. paper filters. They do offer more flow but the trade off for that is larger and more dust particles can and will enter the engine.

Yeah as many have correctly pointed out, K&N definitely doesn't offer better filtration. Mining companies have tested these over many years and don't use them for one key reason. They allow larger dust particles to fit through, therefore increasing engine wear over time. They do flow more air, but at a cost to engine life. Definitely a bad move to fit one to a serious off-road vehicle.

Lots of comments about K&N vs paper filter (panel filter, stock airbox). Use both. K&N on-road, Paper OEM off road. Takes 2 mins to swap filters. Best of both, extra flow for on road, better filtration for off-road. Just my 2c.

I can say that a snorkel dose not RAM the air in or a great sorce for power. But as a person who has bin mudding on a stock filter,then with a cone air filter and now finally a snorkel and K&N stock fit. I can say that my truck is always taking in cold air in definitely,dose not have power lose or struggle to breathe while going in and out of mudd as it did with the factory stock and dose not get water splash or marks as it did with the cone k&n in the engine bay. Now with the fully functional sealed snorkel I can hear it breathe with ease and any slite touch on the gas and it response easy and picks up faster,saveing me gas.rain does not enter in to the filter and it's ree washable saveing me money. Micro dust might enter when dusty dirt clouds but a quick carb cleaner and fuel injection cleaning cleans it out, takes 15min every 6 month no problem.😀

Also, increasing the length of the intake runner only adds to pressure loss in the system. I’d love to see how a snorkel adds power let alone rob power.

what about any dyno testing for a confirmed upgraded power output? Anyone can feel bit more power after replacing some so-called power upgrading stuff, but it's just in your mind, not real!

Some awesome upgrades, but just incase anyone else makes the same mistake I did, K and N filters are not recommended for off road use especially if they are for a diesel Turbo, a few big trips and you can say good by to the turbo

I have snorkel fitted and I haven't see any increase in the power or torque on the dyno graph. My reasons for the snorkel were water crossings and dirt roads anyway.

"Ram air" is a myth. You cannot "ram" more air into the intake unless you add a supercharger or turbo. A K&N filter gives you more power by having a less restrictive/coarse filter material, which in turn allows small dust particles getting sucked into the engine which would normally get caught by a fine/stock air filter. If this is really any offroad vehicle then that's a no no, but if it's all mall crawler then it's all good.

K&N air filter do not provide better air filtration, just more air flow!

If you want to risk your factory warranty these mods sound like a good idea. I would say that the dealership that sold this vehicle would be quite within their rights to refuse a warranty claim if it can be shown that any of these mods contributed towards the failure. As far as engine failure goes good luck on convincing them otherwise!

KN filters let dusty dirty air get past into combustion chamber. What it does? It scratches cylinders and piston, lead to oil consumption and engine rebuild. Instead of silly kn filter, install cold air intake and bigger turbo or compressor.

KandN is NOT going to outperform the OEM filter. K and N will get more air with more dirt. More filtering, means less air and vise versa. At high speeds a snorkel will force air into the engine due to the ram head.

Think of a snorkel you use when diving. It doesn't give you more air, it simply re-locates where the air enters from. Not a performance upgrade in the slightest. You want performance? 1. Bigger Intercooler 2. Bigger Turbo / Higher PSI of existing 3. Bigger Air Intake 4. Higher Flow Fuel Injectors 5. Turbo Back Exhaust / Upgraded Exhaust 6. ECU Flash and Tune

You're not gonna Ram any more air in that snorkel than the turbo is sucking in. In fact a snorkel kills power. good for clean air, and water crossings that's about it.

3:20 sec in the guy is mis-informed. Its ceramic coated to hold the heat in the exhaust. If the gasses cool their velocity slows and performance suffers.

I would stick with the paper filter.. K&N filter has to be oiled and as soon as it goes offroad, the filter will clog up with dust and it will stick to the filter and restrict airflow.

everything i've heard about K&N Air filters has been terrible. They allow too many particles into the engine. Doesn't sound like its worth the marginal power boost.

The ‘ram air’ effect will do absolutely nothing other than direct more debris into the air filter. You are best to face that ‘ram head’ towards the back of the vehicle. A turbocharged engine doesn’t need ram air, the turbo takes care of that. The K&N panel filters are not as good at filtering compared to the standard panel filter, those things are for ‘road cars’ not four wheel drives that can be sucking down dust for days on end. K&N make filters for off road and that is not one of them, they have outer removable layers like socks. You will root your airflow meter before long with those oil sprayed K&N filters. Cold, clean air is important, ram air is not.

Please stop spreading the ram air and the K&N thin air filter. 1st myth (Ram-air) Naturally aspirated engines with normal compression ratios create air pulling or high-speed air-flow only when they rev close to full throttle, how can I believe that a ram air cloud make better airflow when I can only notice air-pulling after removing the inlet & with the engine revving at 4000 rpm+ and only because the valve train rotating forced the intake to create all this air pulling so this feedback (air pulling demand) is coming from the engine valvetrain to the intake , all modern EFI, Air-Mass (MAF) automobiles use only slight amount of air to mix it with gasoline with throttle actuators & lots of sensors such as Intake Air Temperature Sensor, Knock Sensors, Cam/Crank Positioning Sensors and they are tuned to actuate the fuel delivery to match the air mass entering the engine for the worst-case scenarios as where vehicles that are operating in a drastically air polluted cities with their air-cleaners completely clogged, those are the very rare cases where engine performance is reduced by actuators (sprays less fuel due to the low air mass entering the engine) to prevent damaging the engine and to keep the longevity of it, that's why your car does not miss-fire even if your air cleaner is clogged it only performs less(if only the air-filter is clogged), there are millions of other reasons to make the engine miss-fire because of reduced air-flow e.g. clogged intake valves, headers, catalytic converters because all of these components are after all the actuators & sensors I've just mentioned in which can lead to miss-fire, so believing the fact that ram air is better for airflow is pure rubbish, if you want air-flow either you full bolt on your engine or you go for forced induction mod, some snorkel ram air intakes, however, are used to provide alternative air source other than the front grill in a flood or a river crossing for instance. 2nd myth (K&N/Sport Filter) Again on naturally aspirated engines with normal compression ratios those filters only provide 5 more bhp or 5 lb-ft of torque again at very high revs on an off-road you do get into some minor high revs sometimes but most of the time you drive steady progressively and with mid-range torque curve, meanwhile how can i believe that a sport air filter with more air-flow due to logically less filtration could provide a cleaner air, that is tremendously is ridiculous, all kinds of dust & harmful objects are poured to the engine, I don't think anyone that goes off-roading would sacrifice their engine life with some mythical performance fegures.

K&N not only does not filter a tenth of particles of what stick filter filters but it clogs extraordinarily fast losing power. To avoid this it needs to be constantly cleaned, dried and oiled. Who has time for that?? Stay with stock.

Those Steinbauer controllers are great. You will be replacing your fuel pump every 150,000ks though. Toyota engineer for 10% over stock. If you want more pull, don't buy Toyota.

I watch these "engineering based" videos and I can't believe that this unscientific salesmanship is believed by the average punter. I'll explain. 1. The velocity of the air due to the ramming of the air into the air box will be reduced by the air filter. If not the filter is not filtering. Also statndard air filters are probably the best on the market. Think about it. Why would any manufacturer fir an air filter that restricts air flow and reduce power output? If this was the case and the aftermarket filter allowed more air to pass, whats happening to the filtering? I suggest bigger holes and freer flowing air equals more dust and dirt pass as well. Another furfy perported by the "engineering gurus" on videos is that the rain hat top on a 79 series Landcruiser should be changed for the square cross hatched model as shown by "old mate" in the video. This is because they reckon that there is not enough surface area to let the engine breathe. I have measured both. The 79 series standard rain hat has a larger surface area than the square one. So I'll call it. .......... Horses..t!! 2. The dump pipe is ceramic coated to "not" dissipate the heat? Then how is it keeping it cool? 3. Toyota manufacturing a vehicle that has to handle variations in air pressure throughout the world is not the reason that the vehicle does not perform at it's peak. The manifold pressure sensor takes care of the differences in air pressure. The truth is that these engines are set up with a lean air fuel mixture for lower emissions. Re mapping the air fuel mixture richer, ensures maximum power for the available boost pressure but this also increases emissions. Nobody in this video mentions emissions. Wayne Roberts

Don’t know why this was on my list, this guy is a uninformed tool passing on miss information to others. Safari does not ‘ram’ air at all, and it may keep some dust out of your air cleaner but introduces much more bugs and large debris K&N are terrible on modern cars, they don’t filter the air enough to protect the engine, they also coat the air flow meter with oil film, both of which actually reduce performance, increase maintenance costs and increase fuel usage over time Ceramic coating on exhausts is to keep heat in, this makes the exhaust gasses maintain velocity which promotes good flow. It also helps prevent corrosion which is a big issue on 4wd that actually get used.
