How to increase the distance of your drives by activating your arms and creating more club speed.
Former PGA and Champions Tour player Jim Roy explains how to increase distance with your driver.
Jim tells a story from "back in the day" when he was working on his swing... trying to make a big shoulder turn, and hip turn... and things weren't going very well. Then legendary teacher Jim Flick came up to him and told him to use less body and more arms.
A lightbulb went off, and Jim started activating his arms more during his swing, instead of thinking too much about his body.
A big key to distance is getting your arms involved, because with your arms you can create speed that you can't create with your body. And clubspeed = distance.
If this tip helped you increase distance, then let us know by giving the video a thumbs up. And leave a comment below to let us know what you want to see next!

This is priceless. A Tour player who clearly articulated what his major power source is. There are of course other methods. The Golfing Machine would call this a "hitting" action, where power comes from the trail arm and hand. It's a feeling of straightening the bent right arm into a straight arm condition on the downswing, The key is.... the right arm should NOT be fully straight prior to impact. Straightening it early is what's known as "casting", "early release", "clubhead throwaway" which is the menace that plagues most recreational golfers. Mostly caused by over acceleration . The urge to SMASH the ball instead of applying a steady driving force to the shaft of the club with the trail arm and hand. Snead said he likes to feel like he is swinging "in oil". Great visual. Imagine yourself swinging a club at the bottom of a 10 foot pool filled with oil .

Jim makes it looks so easy that it's tempting to think it comes naturally to him. He has put a hell of a lot of work into that beautiful swing.

Good points well made, however most amateur golfers do either all arms or all body! You are swinging your arms faster but the caveat being your still activating your swing with your lower body. Just something you may want to point out to those who just swing with their arms. Lovely natural effortless swing by the way.

Steve Brown.....you are correct but he uses the lower body to " stay in balance" as he explained. Enjoy the golf season !

Just met Jim Roy in the Bahamas. His son is playing on the Korn Ferry tour. What a nice guy. Sent him my swing a year ago and he analyzed it for free. What are the odds of me running into him in the Bahamas yesterday?? 👍🏼👍🏼

Moe Norman.. He descended into his downswing after setting into his forward knee and hip.. then he just let his arms follow. All on a single plane, but the same move, letting the arms swing into impact.

I like your instruction here which is similar to Mike Malaska's thoughts. However, the one disagreement I have is that you are not applying the laws of physics in regard to torque. The center around the pivot point (your lead shoulder) does not need to move fast to generate speed. Add the double pendulem where more power is transferred to the clubhead via tha second pivot point (the hands) and you have a great deal of torque. Just watch pumpking chunkin and you'll get the idea. I do believe that this swing is much much better for seniors that don't have the mobility. But to blanket statement that this technique generates more speed is misleading. Also, any time you introduce more dynamics (the arms in this case) to the golf swing, the higher the chance for error. You can do it easily because you have probably been swinging a club since a very young age.

So many contradictions in golf, some say you swing with your body and some with your arms. It's no wonder many golfers just don't improve very much.

Yes, agreed. I encourage you to make your own observations. I've played with so many young, strong golfers who don't rotate the hips at all and still smash it 300 yards. When you cut out the contradictory teaching noise and observe carefully, it's obvious that the speed comes from the arms. After all, I've never swung a club with my legs.

Its all about sequencing. Thats why each golfer has to work on different things. Of course if you change one part of the sequence it throws off the other parts...

Found this really helpful thanks. What is your thought to activate/ make the arms swing faster? I assume its not pumping the arms otherwise everything will tense rather than stay loose. is it a whipping motion in the shoulders/ core. thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Only just found your channel. its great. Subscribed after the first video. :-) Thanks

How do you swing the arms faster, using the arms when the arms are supposed to be passive in golf?
@florianredecsy4997
@florianredecsy4997 6 жыл бұрын
wardn53 That’s exactly the problem with instruction nowadays. There is too much misinformation. The arms are not supposed to be passive. They are highly active. The speed comes from the arms, the lower body gives you a platform to keep in balance... Eg. Do you try to keep your arms passive when throwing a ball, or skipping a rock, or throwing a frisbee, making a slapshot in ice hockey. And if you say now that you will cast the club... casting the club has many reasons but is not the fault eg moving head forward of the ball in the downswing and many more...

Just your arms? Really? You made more upper body turn than most recreational players. When you finished you were facing the target. How’s that arms only?
@mikerodrick2430
@mikerodrick2430 5 жыл бұрын
He didn't say arms only. He said activate the arms to get them moving faster. How many pros do you see swinging their arms faster than their body moves in sequence? To me, proper sequence is the key. NOT faster arms. When most players try to swing their arms faster, they also tighten their grip which tightens your muscles which is a natural killer of speed. Relaxed muscles will always move faster. If you can feel the weight of the clubhead while swinging it, you're relaxed. If not, your muscles are too tight & you're losing speed. That's also 1 way to gauge your grip pressure which is a major issue that is rarely addressed. It should feel like the club is pulling you, not you pulling it. The heavier the head feels, the better.

The ONLY way; REALLY? Ask Leadbetter, McCormick, Foley, Hall, Smith or 10 others & I'll bet they'll ALL tell you the swing starts from the body.
