Bolt shims made a HUGE improvement for my CZ 457 Varmint MTR for both the 22lr and 17HMR barrels. My take from this is that Bergara does a better job at the factory with head-spacing than CZ. Although there’s a lot of voodoo in the world of rimfire, so often what works for one doesn’t for another.
@PursuitofAccuracyАй бұрын
I'm sure it's a floating tolerance. I think they are worth the few bucks someone would spend to optimize a factory barreled action for sure
@wowguy3562Ай бұрын
I feel it's safe to say I have sorted more 22lr ammo than anyone, maybe 20k rounds. Here is the interesting thing I have found, now this is the cheap 3 bucks a box ammo. I can re-measure some ammo, and it appears the rim will give me say 3 different measurements, i.e. - one side of the ammo's rim may be way thicker vs the opposite side, and the measurements are repeatable, its what I call bad ammo. I have found on the low end .0365 rims up to .042 thick rims, I sort out to .0005 lots. Yes, I have more time than money, but it is interesting results for sure. I like the idea of shimming, it makes a lot of sense if you have consistent ammo.
@ffrank7905Ай бұрын
Absolutely correct. That's what I do, then I measured the head space, subtract the difference in rim thickness, and now you'll know what shim to use. I noticed a difference on my CZ 457.

The only repeatable results from sorting I have ever gotten were from sorting Remington Subsonic by weight. The heaviest ones shot on par with any match ammo I've tried in that rifle. I did the math, and if I want 50 rounds of match quality ammo, it is cheaper to just buy a box of match ammo than it is to buy enough Rem SS to sort out 50 accurate rounds. Sorting is not the answer. I consider my rim thickness gauge to be one of the worst purchases I ever made.
@wowguy3562Ай бұрын
@@sapago4166 When I sort by rim size, I typically get 6 main sizes of ammo. .0395 .040 .0405 .041 .0415 and .042 With most in the 40 and 41 category. I have a scale, but I haven't used it, it would be way too much work, if I were shooting a match and weighing 150, it may be worthwhile. I totally agree, just buying good ammo is the best answer

They work for sure. But interesting to see it move away from a headspace Lapua shot well and into shooting Eley better.

I had similar results with my B14R HB from A&J. I put mine in an MDT XRS chassis with the Trigger Tech Diamond trigger and used the Cortina precision bolt shroud. Mine doesn't shoot SK bad but it really shines with Lapua Center x , Lapua Long Range, Lapua Midas + and RWS R50. I've never tried the bolt shims but mine is not as consistent with the Eley Match.

Just had a headspace challenge with my new 457 Lilja barrel. Moved to a tighter headspace and it is now way less picky! No more split groups across 3 different brands. That said it now hates all the Lapua I just bought for it... so if you end up not keeping this barreled action I could find it a home 🤣

Love the bug shot I always do that to when the target presents itself. I’m wondering if mine will have the same results making some ammo shoot worse. I guess I’ll have to find out. Cheers Josh

Good ignition is more important than headspace. My B14 R has a .043" head space from Bergara. I no longer use any SK ammo. There are always one or two fliers in every box. Eley SABRP is my go to ammo. Zero fliers so far. Bolt shims really improved the accuracy of my CZ 457, along with fixing the firing pin. The 457 has poor ignition. It also likes SABRP.
@PursuitofAccuracyАй бұрын
I think the 457 has one of the best ignitions in the game for the money. I'm not saying every rifle is great but the good examples are right up there with vudoo etc. I shot 30+ shots over the Chrono with my cz and my vudoo. The SD was 5.1 and 5.3 with Eley team.

My CZ 457 MTR shoots so good I dont need to jack with anything.My Stiller 2500 shoots Lights Out with SK Long Rang Match and Lapua Super Long Range. Ive not had much luck with Eley anything.RWS 5) shoots great at 50 but not too good at 100 yards.

Super interesting stuff... I suppose rim thickness sorting could be a thing to try? 🤔
@wowguy3562Ай бұрын
In all honesty, with quality ammo, they give you a good product you shouldn't need to sort, but if you use cheap stuff, and have time, it may be worth the while. I can sort a box of 50 in about 4 minutes. I do see less fliers with cheaper ammo for sure after it has been sorted. The equipment I used to measure, bought from the big online shopping site. A Raven Eye Custom shell holder, a Digital indicator with a .5" throw (important not to buy the 1" throw, it will be too big) and a set of indicator tips (the tip used is usually pictured in the lower left of the case, about the size of a pencil eraser) , price is about 26, 27, and 8 dollars respectively, so for a 60 dollar investment you can measure your ammo, look at the frequently bought together for the package combo

It just appears eley $15 ammo shoots as good as Lapua $20 ammo, less greasy and easier to find, only down fall is Lapua seems to have ammo that has a lower velocity so easier to keep under supersonic, Team eley! 😄

Problem with that statement is the guys looking for a 700 rem footprint as a trainer for their centerfires. Neither the cz or Annie fill that role
