American Taylor Fritz is into the third round of the French Open, equalling his best result at Roland Garros, following a 2-6 6-4 6-3 6-4 win over Arthur Rinderknech. However, he angered the French crowd by 'shushing' them at the conclusion of the match. Rinderknech was the last remaining Frenchman in the main draw.

I agree with you. I am Spanish and I witnessed something similar in the Madrid Open against Holger Rune in his match against Davidovitch. It wasn´t as nasty because Rune didn´t antagonize the crowd any further after they turned against him, but it could have been much worse if Rune had made any gesture the crowd might consider defiant. I don´t like the way things are going in tennis. There is a very clear line between supporting a local player and harassing the opponent. Some people say the French crowd are bad, but in my view they are no worse than any other (Spanish crowd included, of course).

I seem to be in the minority here but I think the crowd's reaction was great, as was Taylor's. Most tennis venues are staid and stale; the French Open is and should be different. Why not have a huge home advantage for the French players? The crowd kept it to verbal stuff, there was no throwing of junk or any feeling that they were violent. They weren't unpleasant to his girlfriend and team. It was just home field advantage, the same kind that you'll see in any American college town on football Saturdays. Taylor was a college player and he knows what that's like and can let it fire him up. I actually felt sorry more for the French player because I think the weight of expectations was too much. Congrats to both of them but especially Taylor.

@Hill Wellford The issue is the poor sportsmanship, especially for a Grand Slam.Nothing wrong with a home advantage, there's nothing wrong with mostly cheering for your countryman. The issue is the constant booing when you do a mild celebration, the 10s cheering after missed first serves in important games (disrupting rhythm of play in addition to being disrespectful), singing the national anthem twice which completely broke Fritz's serving rhythm, etc... It's terrible behavior, and it's sad to say that it's mostly seen at Roland Garros. The US Open also has a crowd mostly cheering for Americans, which is fine, you rarely see booing that isn't warranted, and extensive disrespect to the opposing player.

I was watching Garcia Vs Blinkova and the crowd were cheering her first serve faults, that is one of the worst things you can do in terms of tennis etiquette and it happened frequently.

The same happened in the Monfils/Baez game. The crowd behaved appallingly. Baez was a trooper and did not flinch. It was a shame that he lost, especially because Monfils then retired from the competition. I'm a Monfils fan, but in that game, with the French crowd, I rooted for Baez.

Agreed. That said, it wasn’t just the French who did it. Wimbledon crowd cheered on every Djokovic’s mistake and fault at the 2019 final; the US crowd constantly interrupted jsut about everyone during points and often during the service motion of the server… AO is probably the best in the sense that they are just out there having fun and there’s usually a equally mix of support for each player (most of the time)… but yeah fans need to learn basic etiquette… people pay good money to watch the players play tennis, not for them to try and get involved of a tennis match by making noises and shouting and chanting

Right! this is football stadium cheering, not tennis cheering. i'm not saying you have to keep quiet like at wimbledon, you can easily cheer the French home favourite, but it's disrespectful if you keep cheering when your opponent makes a mistake or talking when he serves. (I'm not talking about this match but what often happens in French tournaments and at the Us Open, sometimes even in Rome)

Haha! Marion the interviewer seemed so pissed off as well! I'm French, playing tennis on an amateur level, and I'm so ashamed of these reactions. Cheering and supporting an AH like Rinderknech during the match is ok (despite, to me, supporting someone just because you have the same nationality in an individual competition is an idiotic behaviour), but impeding the player's focus and booing Fritz after the match is just awful, and a total lack of respect toward the player. Nowadays, people think that just because they paid to see a match, they are allowed to do anything, and the players are just here to make it entertaining...

I found myself cheering with the crowd during Gael Monfil's comeback from being down 0-4 in the 5th set earlier in the tournament but in that match they were just cheering for Monfil's winners. In this match they are trying to disrupt Taylor's play - totally crossing the line, inexcusable behavior

Tennis is such a competetive game, exhausting,thrilling, being emotionally on the edge. Taylors reaction might not be the reaction of a gentleman, but I can feel it and probably would have acted the same way. Disrespectful as hell, when the matchball was done, he errupted emotionally and let the pressure out. What an audience... Thumbs up for Taylor!
