i can't find the rule anywhere, but i'd be surprised if they don't allow challenges on this by now. the modern hawkeye system tracks the ball in 3D space in something like 1 millisecond incriments so it'd be easy to track where it bounces.

I never had a problem with ppl hitting at me when I'm at the net. Because I felt like it was part of the game. @@secrets.295 "How your opponent feel" or "what others would say" etc. is the things due to which we are forced to say a lie. Humans say or do lots of things which we never wanted to do but are forced to fit in the socities we live. After a match at the time of handshake one can simply say "thanks for playing" and if you enjoyed it add that too. And if you didn't enjoyed then you need to be really gutsy to say it on the face ! But there is no need to say anything if you didn't enjoyed. "Thanks for playing" is good enough. And of course if you genuinely feel your opponent played well and you want to them, then go ahead. Most of the time it said just for the sake of saying, to fit in. Personally I will say there is no need to glorify your win either. But humans are complex creatures, hypocrisy rules us because we want to fit in, accepted by the society. Just my thoughts, people are free to agree or disagree.

My experience in junior tennis decades ago was that the girls were much more intense than the guys. For example, warming up, the guys would just rally the ball back-and-forth a couple minutes, then go up to the net hit a few volleys, ask for a couple overheads. You practice a couple serves and you’re ready to go. The girls, they would drop the ball and slam it into the corner. Then the other girl would pick up the ball, since it was in the corner, drop it and slam it into the other corner. This would go on for about 10 minutes, no rally lasting more than two hits, because everybody was trying to slam it into the corner. It was ridiculous just kind of major intimidation going on during the warm-up. I don’t know why they did that. It was a waste of time, a waste of energy, and a waste of money, having spent the money to even enter the tournament in the first place.

@@epicnora Guys didn't warm each other up that way, trying to smash every ball into the corner. Not even juniors. If anything, you wanted to see how the other guy hit the ball, get a feel for his strokes and how the ball came off his racket and how it came off the court A lot of the time in juniors, the courts varied widely. You might start the tournament on really fast courts, but if you advanced, you'd be playing on much slower courts. Or vice versa. Plus, you want to loosen up your legs, arms and shoulders, everything. Just whacking the ball viciously doesn't help you do that.

Birrell tried with her every effort to confuse the umpire to have the point replayed. In the end, she got the umpire approval that the point was replayed instead of giving the point to Hon. @chay2033
@chay2033 2 ай бұрын
Let me break this down for ya : 0:08: not proper handshake. Handshake is part of one of the most famous norms in tennis 0:15-0:50: purposely agitating arms , legs as well as hitting the racket on the ground at some point to distract her opponents, in an attempt to make her lose the point (which worked @ 0:15). 0:51: purposely hard hitting the ball ON the opponent, which can seriously hurt 1:00: no handshake 1:11: purposely hitting the racket firmly on the ground mutliple time to distract her opponents, in an attempt to make her lose the point. Then argue with the umpire because she gave her a warning which could result in a disqualification (aka losing the match) if she does it a second time 1:25: The girl in pink and white (yastermska) withdrews from the match (meaning she decided to stop playing because she was allegedly injured) right when she was going to lose. Her opponent only needed to win 2 more points to win the match. When you withdraw your opponent still wins the match. However, here people said that the girl who withdrew didn't want to swallow her pride and lose with dignity. The girl in red is infamously considered by many “an easy opponent “ since she won a major but hasn’t been able to reproduce the same success since. 1:36: The same girl, this time in yellow, withdrew from the match right when she was going to lose. Her opponent needed to win one more game to win the match. The girl who won was kicking her butt tbh. Again, the girl who won (Brengle) is also considered as an "easy opponent" by many tennis fans. 1:44: This was a warm-up. They had to interrupt the match before starting back I assume. Warming up with your opponent before the match is traditionally considered as a noncompetitive portion of the match in tennis, that is supposed to be kind of friendly. The girl in red skirt wasn't giving any effort, which screams" I don't wanna be here, I don't care about yall" 2:05 ; black girl (stephens) hit the ball on the opponent. The opponent (Azarenka) didn't appreciate that so she did the same thing purposely 2:17 : girl in pink (Ostapenko) purposely agitates her legs to distract her opponents, in an attempt to make her lose the point (which worked) 2:34 : The girl in green (Mladenovic) purposely turns the crowd against her opponent to make her lose focus. This tournament is in France and Mladenovic is French. She was asking the crowd to make noise almost every single time her opponent was making mistakes. 3:05: u know why ;) 3:12: u know why ...a lot of ppl found her comment arrogant 3:21 : The girl in white and red (ZHANG) purposely made a weird noise (according to her opponent, the bond girl , Wozniacki) before hitting the ball to distract her opponents, in an attempt to make her lose the point.Wozniacki mimicked her while complaining to the umpire, which was considered as immature by many 3:45 : The girl in a dark dress (Siegemund) was clearly losing the set. In tennis when the ball is approaching the net, if the ball bounces on the ground more than once the point goes to the opponent (it's called "not up"). The umpire said that she didn't see that. Which made the opponent upset, lose her focus, and the match... 4:11+4:22+ 7:25, 5:17 + 5:32 +8:45 :10:22: u know why 4:19 : not proper handshake , which I disagree 4:39+ 5:45 + 6:17: same as 3:35, double bounce 6:45 : very hostile match, the crowd was rooting more for the Belgian player (Henin in white). She raised her hand while Serena was serving, Serena complained because according to her, it was an attempt to distract her ..and the umpire said that he didn't see that. 7:40 : The umpire gave Serena a warning because he was accusing her of cheating. In tennis, coaches aren't allowed to coach during a match otherwise u expose yourself to disqualification. The umpire said that the thumb up, with the hands moving forward, counted as coaching...this is when Serena basically had a temper tantrum. 8:05 : The girl in yellow (Azarenka) took a medical time-out and a LONG bathroom break right after her opponent made her lose a match point. This was viewed by many as an attempt to break her opponent's momentum and make her lose focus (which worked) . Having a player still winning a match even if she's very close of losing a match (the opponent having a match point) is common in women's tennis. 9:18 : she called her the b. word 9:30 : in tennis when you hit the ball outside the vertical lines on the side it's "out", meaning the point goes to the opponent. The umpire said it was "out" , but Serena and the commentators said it was "in" right on the line. you can judge by yourself.. 10:38: In tennis, when a line judge ( ones who yell "fault" when a ball is out), BUT the player challenges the point (meaning the player asks the umpire to show the point on camera) and it's "in" or the umpire simply judges that's "in", and both of the players continue to play, the point doesn't count and is simply replayed. In this case, the umpire gave the point to the opponent, even if the line judge said "fault" , but the camera clearly showed that it was "in" .. and the opponent said it was "her point" even though the point should not have counted. Here it was considered "in " because the ball went right on the baseline (horizontal lines near the players). If it was outside the baseline then it would have been "out" as the line judge claimed. Same at 11:33, the only difference is that , it's the umpire herself who said it was "in" instead of the camera. hope this helped lol

To be fair though, with a lot of the two bounce scenarios, you literally have a split second to spot it, get there, whilst thinking about where to play your return, and also watching your opponent.. as well as all the additional stress and emotion from competing at the highest level. It’s obvious watching in slow motion that it’s two bounces but in the moment it’s easy to be mistaken.

A lots of these have nothing to do with sportsmanship. For example, when you're trying to get to the dropshot near the net, you wouldn't always know whether the ball has double-bounced. Cause you'd be looking toward the another side of the court, and if your racquet touches the ground while you hit the ball, you wouldn't know how the ball was bounced exactly. Also, when you're smashing near the net while your opponent is also near the net, it's hard to not hit your opponent cause you will need to hit with a big angle. Lots of time it's just accidental instead of intentional.

You joking or dumb? You exactly know whether the ball double bounced or not. You don't look at the other side of the court when hitting the ball. Maybe you do. Not the pros. Maybe that's why you made such a silly comment and don;t know better. Even if they took their eyes off the ball, you'd exactly know single or double bounce by watching the way the ball flies.

I'm sorry, double bounces have nothing to do with sportsmanship. That's an issue of sportsmanship only if the player trying to reach the ball is aware that the ball has bounced a second time, and I can tell you from 50 years of tennis playing, a player trying to reach the ball is more concerned to reach/put a shot on the ball, than the technical issue of whether the ball has bounced a second time. Not a sportsmanship issue.

@@brucee6123 In pro tennis, it is actually a totally fair play to go directly at your opponent's body as long as the ball trajectory will keep it in play. For example, when you serve, your choices are: up the middle, out wide, or into your opponent's body. A tennis player has these same choices when trying to pass their opponent who may be at the net (an ideal target, I believe, is a right-hander's right hip when they're at the net, left hip for left-handers). Even the pristine, upstanding, and highly respected Chris Evert would occasionally employ this tactic. Watch a clip of Evert's amazing comeback vs Laura Golarsa in the QF of her final Wimbledon in 1989 (when 2-5 down in the 3rd set), and you will see that Evert went right at Golarsa on match point (who was at the net), and it didn't bother Golarsa because she knew it was a fair play.

@@Empy003 No, there's actual video footage of Serena making threats against the linesperson so there's no hearsay about it

@@Empy003 we get you love Serena. But she’s done some awful things. And yes she threatened that lady that called the foot fault. You had to be deaf not to hear it. It was disgusting and really showed an awful side of Serena.

The Iga-Trevisan one seemed fine to me? She just tried to deke a bit and made a great tennis shot. The others I agree are bad, she apologized to Donna, and has stopped doing it.
