I could tell you some pretty crazy stories as well. I left home at 12 and went with my uncle riding freight trains and hitch hiking all over the good ole USA until my uncle met a girl got married and settled down. I kept on riding freight and hitch hiking. I met some pretty crazy people out there. I would stop for a while & work on farms or swamping. (unloading trucks) to get enough money in my pocket and move on. I traveled around with Barnum & Bailey or Smokeys for a few years on and off saved my money to move on I went wherever I felt like going and in all the years of traveling around I could tell you some pretty crazy stores that happened to me.

Only time I met DonWillis was at 1980 world 9ball open..... he didn't play but he was there and my road partner (Howard Barrett) knew Don of course..... NickyVarner said Don hustled him when Nick was young....Don came for a while and then left before we had the big dinner with BobMeucci when he was handing out "endorsements" wanting us to play his cues (turned out to be great cues).....Rempe got us involved, he was already doing stuff with Bob but I don't know about Willis and Bob

Don Willis used to come into the College Bowl in Canton Ohio back in the late 50's early 60's I think it was. He would often show up in the morning after an all nighter wearing a tux and carrying a little velvet lined box with his cue ball in it. He claimed it was made of ivory. He was also a free throw hustler and a pool room downtown put a hoop out back. I think it was Louie's or the Strand. Then there was the time he bet a guy he could hit a golf ball half a mile not using a hill, but he got to pick the time and place. Come winter when Meyers lake froze over and there was no snow on the ice, Don chose to do it. I wasn't there but some people said it was true.

I was mistaken on the dates. The College Bowl was built in 1963. It was a few hundred yards from where I grew up. There were 5 tables and the going rate was a penny a minute. There were several guys who were "fixtures": Fred Martin (Luch), Meredith Cobedash (sp?) (Cobe) who were there everyday and were considered to be the best. Other notables who came in on occasion were Tommy Marino who must have been in his 60's or 70's and was a renowned three cushion billiards champion. The "Bowl" even bought a set of pocket inserts to convert the pool tables into 3 cushion tables, but I don't recall it catching on. Another was Harry the Head a very colorful character. Also John Manos would show up once in a while. Due to overcrowding in the schools I only went to High School classes from 7 to 11 am. I got a job as a pinsetter and worked there pretty much al through high school and regarded these guys and many others as family. I still keep in touch with Patty and Linda who worked at the snack bar for many years for Gene Christ. I have never been around so many colorful characters at once since those days. If I think of any others I will post them in case anyone ever wants to know. This is a great site.

@@libsrdum I don’t think it’s open anymore. Was popular when I was a kid. Lived in canton my whole life. Right there on market. What street did you grow up on? Martindale Is close but so are a lot others lol.

Harold Worst beat Don Willis 😁 and that's the truth. facts. everyone knows Worst was the best, staked his own money, took on all takers, big names doged him like the plague to keep there reputations. I like Don, have seen video of him and he is a great pool player for sure.

Yeah I heard the same thing and if he hadn't died so young of brain cancer his name would be more well known! I had older friends of mine, and I'm 72, tell me he could also play world-class snooker! Harold owned a shoe company called Worst shoes , believe it or not!

I'll run that by Garten! I've heard several accounts of Worst being unbeaten... No one is unbeatable. Garten embellishes Don Willis' legend for sure, I mean who can beat you from the chair? Don Willis I guess, Lol... Thanks for the story.

@@MaxEberle it's backed up by other players. there is a don Willis film of him exhibition shooting in the army, you will see some amazing shots in that. I wish there was more film on these guys.
