With stealth technology, advanced sensors, weapons capacity and range, the F-35 is the most lethal, survivable and connected fighter aircraft ever built. More than a fighter jet, the F-35’s ability to collect, analyze and share data is a powerful force multiplier enhancing all airborne, surface and ground-based assets in the battlespace and enabling men and women in uniform to execute their mission and come home safe.
A vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft is one that can hover, take off, and land vertically. This classification can include a variety of types of aircraft including fixed-wing aircraft as well as helicopters and other aircraft with powered rotors, such as cyclogyros/cyclocopters and tiltrotors.[1] Some VTOL aircraft can operate in other modes as well, such as CTOL (conventional take-off and landing), STOL (short take-off and landing), and/or STOVL (short take-off and vertical landing).

Well if you listen to most fighter pilots its not really living the life. The job is 99% of desk work. Endless amounts of it. And all the (useless) training not related to flying they have to do, and courses etc. So much additional shit that pilot retention is a major problem in US AF and the Navy.

@@shinichi6235 There’s only like 1 video of it doing that. But once again, it does it how you expect it to do it: Slowly angle the vectored thrust backwards until there’s enough air below the wings to lift it without the need for the other downward thrust surfaces and they shut off and the vectored thrust completely angles backwards. Pretty standard.

From Business Insider magazine: "The F-35 Joint Strike Fighter represents the US Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps' vision for the future of combat aviation, but a damning 2015 report detailed how the F-35 had lost in dogfights with F-16s and F-15s - the very planes it was intended to replace. Essentially it came down to energy management in the early days of the F-35's testing, according to the report. With smaller wings than some legacy fighters and an inferior thrust-to-weight ratio, the early F-35 pilots found it nearly impossible to engage with F-16s. The report has since become a talking point for detractors of the F-35 program who say it's too expensive and not capable. But according to retired US Marine Corps Maj. Dan Flatley, who helped design the training syllabus for F-35 dogfights, the F-35's lackluster performance against legacy jets had more to do with old habits of the pilots and a weapons system in its infancy rather than anything wrong with the F-35 concept itself."

@TyRaNno Technically not possible but loopholes to the rule may exist, those loopholes open up entire problems on their own so there is no guarantee we will ever be capable of FTL travel. Regardless I think we will be capable of near light speed by then, likely not for human interstellar travel yet but I'd expect some probes at least. In all honesty I expect there to be methods of propulsion that reach significant percentages of the speed of light in the coming decades so a probe to the nearest star might come even sooner, maybe constructed in about 50 years given funding. Assuming even 25% of speed of light is attainable a Proxima Centauri journey would take close to 17 years from our perspective, even smaller speeds may be feasible assuming the craft can survive longer and actually transmit data after that long. There are many compromises though because an RTG would have to make it that long or we would need an alternative power source. The engine itself will likely need power, several proposed methods of propulsion require electricity but for the ones that don't including various nuclear options this shouldn't be an issue while accelerating. If fission is an option for propulsion the reactor may be designed to function for power when not accelerating. Strontium90 RTGs could power spacecraft for decades but need much more mass to provide the power output of a shorter lived plutonium one which already produce fairly little, this isnt an ideal scenario when trying to save mass for interstellar travel. Communication is also important, the probe will have to be heavily automated to compensate for it taking over 4 years to send a message one way. Antenna and transmitters will have to be much stronger, or we can use lasers. These are all things I think we will figure out by the next century, super luminal travel if even indirectly possible I think is a bit further off.

The Harrier was and is an engineering marvel, having said that it was very limited, as all VTAL aircraft are with respect to it's payload, range and speed, always was and will be one of the most important and capable air platforms ever divised
@seancleary3836
@seancleary3836 5 жыл бұрын
The Harrier had an inferior system for vertical flight making it prone to crashes. The competitor aircraft to the F-35 (boeing X-32 I think it was) used the Harriers style of vertical flight. The inherent safety risks were the same as with the harrier. Exhaust gas can be sucked back into the engine resulting in loss of thrust. Many harriers went down. The F-35 doesn't have this issue with its shaft driven central fan.

Great jet too... the Harrier. However what the US military is interested in is not necessarily only the battle capability, but the data it collects and uses in strategy. The software and system they have created is akin to alien technology (I am vehemently adamant it should never to be used on a mass scale because it's insane what they have made). Peace and freedom should be the only end of conflict. As a US citizen, I support the alien technology the military creates inasmuch as what they do supports this end. My vote and my voice will always be to promote peace and responsible prosperity. A military run by trained citizenry and not mercenaries is arguably more just and moral in its conscience. War is hell, and the intention I would hope for is that every person of character wants to make the world a better place through peace. Humanity is on its way to becoming a type II civilization which will scale the cosmos as long as it works to turn alleged enemies into rivals, rivals into allies, and allies into friends.

It is a actually SLOW beast that CAN'T FLY HIGH ALTITUDE and as of yet has NO COMBAT EXPERIENCE. Its cannon can't shoot straight and the whole program was plagued from errors and failures. I'm not saying its crap man, up until now it has done nothing to impress in terms of characteristics or performance in real combat zones (especially against ++4 Gen aircrafts like the Rafale, the Su 35, the Eurofighter or the J20) or against S-400 systems. Lets wait and see how it goes, but i believe its early to call this bird a triumph
