Hey there former Navy sailor here CTR2(IDW/SW) and at the start of the video they mention the F-35 is capable of aircraft carrier operations but that ship shown is the USS Bonhomme Richard LHD-6 a Wasp class Amphibious Assault ship. The Wasp class was a design evolution from older traditional carriers and heli carriers so it's often mistaken for conventional fixed-wing aircraft carriers. The LHD stands for Landing Helicopter Deck. Typically they carry the MV-22 Osprey, AV-8B Harrier II, AH-1 Cobras and some CH-53 Sea Stallions. There are others but these are the most common on the flight deck. The LHD ships are basically a mobile landing strip for Marine aircraft but also have a number of sea to shore small craft like the LCAC, LCU and LCM. Sometime in the mid 2010's they started playing around with the F-35 being able to launch off the LHD platform but there was alot of issues early on. I've been out now for over 6 years so I'm not entirely informed on the current status of it but I would imagine they've made some headway. Also for those even further curious enough in July of 2020 the Bonhomme Richard was heavily damaged by a massive chemical fire and the repairs were estimated to be about over 3 billion dollars and would take several years to complete. The Wasp Class I believe is only valued around 1 billion to construct and so the decision was made that she be decommissioned and sold for scrap.

Really?! Even the harrier could do vtol. What besides stealth actually blows your mind? And even then we had the f117 nighthawk that was very stealthy. The F35 has awful power to weight ratio. Even an f16 could beat it in a merge. I think america has went one step foward and two steps backwards. The f14 tomcat at least had the aim54 phoenixes that outrange modern amraams. Our country is in desperate need of a LRM for air to air engagements.

Honestly, look at the specs of Russian sukhoi 35, it's truly another category. Or even compare it to the French Rafale. It's much better. There are reports they picked the wrong outer material for F35, the plane collects rust. If they couldn't get this simple part right, it says a lot about the overall performance of the plane. The vertical landings look cool and all, but if planes from other countries are 100 years ahead in terms of performance, we could say it's shit.

The thing is it wouldn't get damaged. An F-35s purpose is to stay as far away from the battle as possible because that's where it operates the best. Its primary role is BVR engagements, if an invasion were to happen the F-35s role would be to destroy air targets first then once it doesnt need to worry so much about stealth aspects it can carry bomb loads. If an F-35 gets battle damage than the F-35 failed its primary mission.

It's an air intake, but I'm guessing that it can be used as an air brake as well. maybe? (the video shows the door opening on take-off, not being used as a brake at all, and it is clearly marked "Danger Fan intake Danger") Also, the vapor "cone" that is seen around the aircraft is present during high angle of attack maneuvers, and is caused by the air first COMPRESSING then decompressing as it is flowing around the aircraft.

@@jstephenallington8431 It's the door to the intake, the original design didn't even have it that way, but two side doors instead. It's open on takeoff because the lift-fan is running. The idea is that since it goes really slow, the wings don't produce enough lift, so the fan adds what's needed to take-off. This is what allows the short take-off.

The USAF, USMC, and US Army do not care about 80 years ago, back then was different fighting, not like today where you take s BVRM like the Meteor and snipe a MiG-29S from 60 miles and he can’t do anything about it because the missile ignores flare or chaff, the Russian R-70 is literally useless compared to the Meteor, the guidance system is terrible. So now tell me how the Soviet aircraft feel when they know something like an F-22 or F-35 is in their vicinity. When your'e born obsessed with aeronautics as I was your default position is that there is no such thing as an ugly airplane, but every now and then an airplane comes along that tries very very hard to dispell that notion. The F-35 goes from graceful, menacing and elegant to a penguin who saw a ghost and stayed that way with the flick of a switch, redeemed by the fact that it goes back to graceful again but my goodness, it's like part of the design brief was "give it a 'chase the enemy away' mode which it achieves with fright and ugliness.

My Company designed and built these despite the disagreements between the Army, Navy, and Airforce. It's kinda like designing the perfect commuter car based upon input from every commuter in the Country! Will it go fast when needed yet still get affordable gas mileage? Will the emissions meet government standards? Will it handle racecar as well as grocery getting capabilities? Will it be maneuverable in a parking lot? What colors would you like? Automatic or 6 speed? 4 cylinder, 6 cylinder, 8 cylinder or 12 cylinder? Will it have BlueTooth Capability and/or concert status audio? Will it be affordable and desirable to all economic classes? What will the Warranty period be? It was a tough battle but eventually something came of it! The thing of it is, in our supposedly conscientiously fiscal responsibilities and RFP Government environment where lowest bidder wins the prize, I'm surprised that anything was accomplished! Imagine if you will, you respond to a Request for Proposal and your approved bid is $25m per plane yet each of the different services want's something which none of the other services need or want which brings the cost of the plane to over $30m? (And you wonder why there are $650 hammers?) Believe it or not, ALL of these various inputs dictate the success or failure of a specific design. Many have failed but this one was a success.
