It is important to note that Full Backup and Incremental Backup both Clear the Archive bit. Differential Backup does not clear the Archive bit. This is important to know in relation to Security+ exam.

Many videos on the Internet contain lengthy, technical explanations without simplifying the main points. And sometimes there is a smart aleck presenter trying to act "all that", offering useless ostentation which distracts me from the information I am trying to collect. These videos are simply the best. Thank you!

OP really has such a knack for explaining a concept in a way that pierces through any veil of obfuscation. It's akin to a song that hits a nerve in the right way for a particular mood, but the nerve in this case is the one that leads directly to the "Oh!" sector of understanding for a given topic or idea

Nice tutorial easy and simple to understand visually. however during incremental backup animation that starts at 2:31 onwards the weekday backup shouldn't carry on the day before's backup.. like for Wednesday it should have only shown yellow data rather then green+yellow.
@Modifyinc1
@Modifyinc1 5 жыл бұрын
Exactly, I'm surprised no else noticed or commented on it. Based on his illustrations, incremental should take the same amount of time as the differential. It shows the incremental copying the previous day's backup for every day of the week just as the differential did.

If you watch it again you'll see the backup is represented by the tape icons. The animation here is not the same. The cylinders below show the cumulative data that has changed since the last full backup, not what's being backed up.

Please note that some backup systems (such as restic) do not do any of the above, because they are typically uses on media that is not a linear read/write. such as S3 buckets or hard drives.

Very cool animations and very clear explanation. Just one notice: backups are not only for disasters/hardware failure but also used for user errors when a user deletes something and we have to recover it. And if this happens maybe the file to be restored is stored on a specific "day's" incremental backup, you only need to open that specific and one incremental backup tape so opposing your explanation, in this case there is no need to restore all incrementals but only that specific one is needed to be opened where the deleted file backup is. When there is a disaster of corse you have to restore the full and the following incrementals but if a deleted document is to be recovered then only a single incremental backup is needed maybe. What do you guys think, it this correct?

I still don't know if or how much backup space these methods will or won't waste. - Full backup » next full backup needs at least twice the backup space as usually removing old backups comes after the new one has been made. - For those other two » will it just add a bunch of double, tripple etc files that are often modified until you actually get to a restore? What if your backup space is identical in space to the drive you want backups of? And you just want the full backup to be updated with the latest modified files overwriting the old ones.

well done, and using the 'tape drives' is excellent way to demonstrate backups(bups). ( except the young'uns may need to google tapedrives/history..) 1. for the average person (with a PC/laptop with 500GB internal storage) , you simply need to buy a 2TB or 5TB external usb drive. 2. if you make alot of important updates to your PC, then make 1 Full bup each day ( but KEEP a known 'good' copy) Else 'schedule' a differential bup , using your bup program 3. they only time you will ever care about bups is when you need to get your data/system back. SIMPLE is BEST.
