Could be a slightly exaggerated opinion, but I think India's home success boils down to this: 'We are not at good at playing spin, but opposition is definitely worse'

Opposition is not worse. They are playing against better quality spinners who are used to bowling long spells. Overseas spinners are not used to bowling long spells barring someone like Nathan Lyon.

@@nitlover8319 Agreed. That is another pillar of the dominance. Apart from Lyon, no great spinner in the world today. I sometimes wonder how Yasir Shah would've fared on Indian pitches. Nope, people forget change is slow in a real system. Because their avg at home against spin was good and they continued to win, the juicers were favored. Test championships have reduced the number of flat batting paradises. Now their batters are suffering. It is really bizarre for them to do this when they have a very good pace attack.

Amazing content thank you. As an Indian, I love these pitches - from time to time - because it's fun and every ball is interesting. But every Test can't last two and a half days. There has to be some balance here. You can't make spin bowlers (Lyon excluded) look like world beaters purely because of the pitch - its too much luck and not enough skill. Once a series its fun, but it can't be every match. Tests need to go 4-5 days.

As far as 2020 is concerned, you need to remember India played only four Tests that year. Two of them in New Zealand where the highest run scorer of the series managed only 122 runs from 4 innings(the highest from India only a 100), the third Test had India being bowled out just for 36

Looking at those figures, it's not just that their batting has dropped off so much, it's also that their batting was at an extraordinary high in that 3 year period between 17 and 20 also. I think you should do a comparison to a few more 3 year periods prior to 17-20, just to show how dramatic the drop really is.

One other aspect i wish was covered here is the number of matches/year the top six end up playing. During India's peak M Vijay, Che Pu, Jinx, Vihari, Ashwin, were test specialists. Now look at the indian 11. They are ALL multi-format players except Che Pu. Show me other players that play the same volume of cricket as indian top 6 and yet shine in all formats? With the congested schedules taking away tour matches, shrinking gaps between tests (4 day break between tests???) the players simply dont get a break and cant switch formats. I believe this definitely has played its part.

You could look at that data, but you wouldn't have a particularly robust (and in many cases non-existent) sample size. Away batters will play few (or often no) tests in any one nation during a three year period. In fact, Australia are the only one of those sides to have played in India in both the three year periods that Jarrod focused on. The Australian numbers dropped off significantly (a decrease of a little over 8 runs per wicket), but this is from a negligible sample, and with variations in personnel. Comparing the performances of a home side to those of away sides in any one country over a three year period is not reliable in this way, because no away side will play enough matches there.

Forget the established bats....the guy i'd use as an example is Shubman Gill. When i saw him debut in Aust a cpl years ago i saw a magnificent technique and talent. BUT, since then he's gone on to have a 30 average which means he must have seriously dropped off. The clue is he averages 40 AWAY but only 24 at HOME. He's playing half his test cricket on wickets created to stifle touring bats, and it must effect Indian batsmen also. He SHOULD be minimum a 45 avg after 15 odd tests.....his technique is that good. You get better facing spin as your game matures so i wont judge him too fiercely on this series. There's a chance he could even be lost to the game if runs dont come in the 4th test. When he toured on quality test standard batting wickets in Aust, he made good runs. Its a damn shame.

Poor Jadeja gets pushed to #5 in difficult conditions (swing or spin) for left/right combination, in order to disrupt the rhythm of the bowlers. You're more likely to see him bat in the top 6 at 50/3 rather than 200/3. If top 7 were included in these stats instead of top 6, the drop will not be as significant I believe (he has two hundreds batting from 7 last year).

@@MukeshKumar-ss5tm Pant was also getting out at #5 in the first two tests of the England series, which is why Jadeja got promoted in the first place. A year later, in the 5th test, Pant got better, and the Dukes' balls also got weirdly easier to face. Jadeja regularly faces 2nd new ball with ease, although he's set by then. I feel he looks the part and leaves the swinging ball really well, which other Indian batters (except Rohit and KL) have a lot of trouble with. He could be persisted with at #5 or 6, in my opinion.

It's just they hardly played any domestic match before they face any gd genuine spin bowler. The best spin india batsman can face are certainly inside India itself. So top players didn't have the quality to play against. U can say match practice but jadeja and Ashwin isn't the one who can provide a variety of attack that India needs to get used to. Pant and shreyas has gd records against spin in India. And that's because they are new and has face domestic bowling recently in last 5 year. The only one who is a little out of loop might be shubham gill but he also hasn't played that many matches. So it's all about top order players has run out of domestic good spin bowling practice.

You can see it in the current series. Wickets produced to favour the home team, and it does takes time for a touring team to get accustomed to these unusual decks. As the series has progressed the tourists batting is improving (and they probably should have also won the Delhi test, but collapsed in a heap). There's nothing wrong with it as long as Indian fans are ok with 3 day games and seeing less quality batting. Afterall, there are currently half of the worlds top 10 batsmen playing in this series, and that is normally something definitely worth seeing.....but they are not getting to see them doing what they do best. Those type of wickets are killing both teams these days.

India was unbeatable through the 90's, playing on turning pitches with 3 spinners & a pacer but Indian batsmen always got big runs because they knew how to play spin. Most of the current Indian batsmen don't play any domestic cricket, and therefore, they lose their skill to play on turning pitches. We used to see the likes of Sidhu, Tendulkar, Azhar, Ganguly, Laxman, Sehwag, Dravid, etc. use their feet regularly to the greatest of spinners, like Warne, Maralitharan, Vettori, etc. and smash them all over the ground on turning pitches with batting average of above 40-50 in India but the current crop of Indian batsmen are just incapable of doing that. The selectors should give more chances to people like Sarfraz Khan, Prithvi Shaw & others who are doing well against spin domestically, and we will see very different results in Home Tests. Maybe India should have horses for courses, and have different set of batsmen for Tests within India, and Tests outside of India. Why not? We don't play exact same bowling combination for Home & Away Tests, so there is no reason not to have different batting combinations for Home & Away Tests. Players like Prithvi Shaw, Mayank Agarwal, Pant, etc. who are really good at home on turning pitches, should play in Home Tests, and the likes of Ajinkya Rahane, Pujara, etc. should play in SENA countries.

Indian batting lineup in test needs a bazball sort of attitude

You are overthinking this, barring Rishab and Rohit our top 6 have simply been poor and the pitches have little to do with it, kohli has scored tons of runs on rank turners, he comes from delhi the pitches here have always favoured spinners and he has scored many runs on these kind of tracks early in his career, he used to be great against spin playing late and using the crease but over the years he has forgotten those skills , changed his game to play against swing overseas and coming forward more often.

India has produced great players of spin and continues to do so look at the stats of sarfaraz ,iyer, easwaran, jaiswal, mayank, yash on turning tracks they have been brilliant even on tracks like the ones India is playing on , current indian top 6 except rohit and pant are just simply out of form

You're using Rohit as an example but remember what Rohit used to do just before the overall downfall started , maybe you're forgetting what Rohit and Agarwal did while opening beforehand so compare that to now and the whole video is actually true like he mentioned kl Rahul's drop isn't that much cause he wasn't that level to start with and same applies to Rohit so something like an avg of 45 will look good unless you remember it was 70-80 before

@@saitama2508 yes Rohit's avg has dropped at home but it hasn't dropped as much as other players in our top 6, even virat used to avg in the 70s at home and he still averages close to 60 because of that past record only but in the past 3 years he is averaging in early 20s, same is the situation with other indian batters and its mainly due to the fact that they have been out of form they once had the skills to score on these tracks thats why i mentioned delhi and how kohli used to score so many runs there early in his career on tracks similar to ones on which he is struggling now . Pant, Ashwin ,jadeja, axar are averaging way better than specialist batters playing on the same tracks. The pitches are bad for batting i am not denying that but Indian batters have had the ability to score on these kind of pitches look at the upcoming players i talked about they are scoring runs on turning tracks like these.

The Indians were hoist by their own petard ! Playing on spinning tracks was bound to rebound at some stage especially given India's fragile batting line up. It was obvious to most watchers except the Indian think tank ! They escaped by the skin of their teeth in Delhi thanks to the Aussies losing their heads for 90 minutes on the third day after being in front through the early part of the game. It could so easily have been two one in favour of Australia but India did not learn its lessons .Each pitch played progressively worse than the previous one with Indore being the worst .The sensible thing to do was to play on sporting pitches that lasted 5 days as India has the bowling line up to take advantage of such conditions. But they were so obsessed with getting to the WTC final that they lost sight of the BGT. Now the momentum is with Australia and India will have to do all the running to get to the WTC final !

I'd say the name of the game in pitch curation should be balance. If your pitch favors any one category more than everything else, then it's not a good pitch. Be it batting, pace bowling, or spin bowling. I can see that it's easier said than done but at least this should be the goal of pitch curation even if you fall short. But when it's clear that your goal was to favor any one thing more than everything else, then there's really no excuse.

don't worry, Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant will score crucial runs in pressure situations for India.

Very good analysis but I don’t think tweaking of pitches is the sole cause for the drop. One of major reason could be due to Virat‘s form the whole team relied on him so heavily when he is not scoring centuries the entire lineup is falling apart. Another reason could be the scheduling changes after the WTC and Covid. India hardly plays at home and due to the busy schedule none of Indian test players play lot of FC at home. I feel the pitches are the same as before but skill of the players against good spin has reduced drastically in the recent times. The ICC should make the rating of pitches more transparent it should not be based on the result of the match instead pitches should be rated comparing the behavior of the pitches in test matches to the first class matches.

Except Pant, all the Indian batsmen are in poor form. They are now not able to score runs even against mediocre spinners even in India. IPL has destroyed their batting😡😡😡😡

You might notice that they average much better in ODIs though. Indian players take a while to transition between formats, so while a player has been playing well in ODIs, he takes a test or two to play well in the test series immediately following the ODIs. Since India has been playing more ODI and T20 matches, they haven't got the chance to condition themselves to play tests anymore. It's also a transition time for India now that they're batting lineup is ageing. SL struggled similarly, once they lost Sanga and Mahela in quick succession, but they've recovered in a couple of years. We'll see another couple of years before India get back up on their feet.

The thing to remember as well is there is no excuse for pretending the wickets are that way naturally....for a long time curators could control the amount of sunlight, the amount of water, or even dig out the entire square and import the perfect soil and grass...can even have drop in pitches in big city stadiums. There's no shortage of money in the game to do whatever they want. So they definitely CHOOSE to prepare these types of decks such as at Indore....hence the BCCI must want this. I dont think its good for the game in India. They are missing out. The difference is that in Australia when champion batsmen visit (eg Lara Tendulkar) the locals want to see them play...its a treat that they are touring. in India however, they seem desperate to somehow stifle them and reduce any chance they have of performing. The crowd misses out....and the WORLD misses out. Each nation is allowed to do as they please though. These days even their own top class bats seem to struggle on them also. I'm thinking its far more likely the influence of white ball cricket in destroying sound techniques.
