In his youth, Kapil looked like a dark skinned Dennis Lillee: Both stood exactly 6 feet tall, both had a highly muscular physique, both sported a moustache, both were very athletic when fielding and both had a piercing smile.

If I had to choose one cricketer from India as my favorite, I will choose Kapil Dev. I saw him in person for the first and last time in 1983 in Guyana when India defeated the West Indies in a 50- over match.. He is without doubt one of the greatest players on planet Earth -- Mohamed Alli.

"This was the first victory against Pakistan after 20 Test matches". They made it sound like we kept on losing. Its not true. India already won in 1952/53 series. Then it was 15 or 16 draws and then India lost 2 test in Pakistan. So the head to head tally after this match was 3-3.

After 1961, cricket between the two couuntries resumed only in 1978-1979. Till 1961, only two series were played between the two teams. This series was only the fourth series between the two. So the commentary was full of cherry picked statistics.

Who was the top team during Miandad's time? It was not England, it was not Australia, it was not New Zealand. West Indies were head and shoulders above Australia and England, and New Zealand was the weakest test playing nation in those days. What is the performance of Miandad against West Indies in West Indies? And for that matter against West Indies even in Pakistan?

1979 seems so far away ! I can see a lot of people eating icecream .What a seachange .In those times you had to struggle to get test match tickets with stadia full . Today test matches are played to empty houses . Nobody has time to spend five days in a stadium ; you'd probably get sacked for remaining AWOL at office! Thanks for taking the trouble Jai , a labour of love .

Wow!!!i remember those days during the test matches when i m in school in the school break me & my friends running to the canteen & ask the latest score bcz in canteen there was a radio where teachers & other students listen the commentry. What a days now just remember only.

It was my first match that I seen and enjoyed on BW tv at my neighbor 's home . We were recently came from native place gujarat for settle in mumbai. And Kapil dev was only player to whom I know as indian cricketer.

Me too. Just listening to the commentary gave the utmost excitement, visualising in imagination. Remember that Gavaskar innings at the Oval test 1979 where he scored 221 chasing the target of 436 against Mike Brearly's team , match ending in a draw.

Abbas' temperament against high quality pace bowling was already in question after his mediocre outing in the West Indies in the series prior to this tour when Marshall, Garner, Holding and Roberts were back in the regular squad. He was therefore under pressure as visible for most of the Indian tour.

Miandad’s lbw was dubious but then Gavaskar also got many dubious decisions in Pakistan

@@amitjain11000 , Miandad was never given out LBW in Pakistan. Miandad's batting record against West Indies bowling (the gold standard of pace bowling those days) is nothing much to write home about.

By the way Miandad to date remains the only player from the subcontinent to have 2 scores of 250+ in the SENA Region ( SA, England, New Zealand and Australia). No Tendulkar , Sehwag, Gavaskar or Dravid , only Miandad. Besides he remains only one of the two.players whose career average never went below 50 and while Sutcliffe only played 60 tests Miandad played 124 Tests Also please compare his numbers against Lillee/ Hadlee in their backyard against Gavaskar to find out why Australians/ New Zealanders of that era respect Javed more than Gavaskar

I was in 6th standard during those days when this test was played.My friends use to discuss about happenings of Test matches/series and I used to keep mum as I hadn't any idea.One of my friend insisted to come and watch match at neighbor's home ( oh ,having TV at home was sign of rich people).I started to watch match unwillingly right from its beginning. As the match advanced,an interest started growing in me.I watched the match (barring school time).India won the match.After that I became fanatic about game of Cricket.

Before 90, most of stadiums are completly filled with crowds in test matches. Now in india its hard to see even 25% filled the stadium

The same fellow, who; in kahoots with the CM, created a drama of getting kidnapped, and get more than 10 people, who were charged with murder and such, and who were friends of veerappan, released from jail. The CM then ordered these criminals to be released, Thank God, this plot was foiled by the court and the drama ended in few days after release of great rajkumar shame on him!

Who says that cricket became popular after 1983 world cup win, look at the Wamkhede in 1979, you can't find atmosphere like this in these days in a test match.

Bring back old Wankhede, Eden Gardens, Cheepauk, Mohali. You would see atlist 50% turnout even in a boring draw test match. Bring back old stadiums. Bring back the crowd.
