21 years ago and this loss still rankles me!! India could have achieved the unthinkable!! Could have proved decisive for the Indian cricket

Thank you for suggesting this, since I've wanted to relive it again from my school days . I remember that it was the only Test game with a winner during that 1997 five test tour by India.It coincided with Brian Lara getting his first (even though temporary) try at the West Indies captaincy.The win boosted his chances at finally getting it permanently in 1998.The loss affected counterpart Tendulkar's hold on the position.

The interesting thing about this match was when India got bowled out it rained heavily and the field was flooded for two days. If India could have hung a little long they could have earned a draw. But what a Bowling attack that was.

This was the match between humans and aliens great windies skills at best. Miss these kings of game I still remember their terror on field. God bless all of them specially lara.

This Indian cricket team was filled with real legendary players. If the current Indian fancy cricket team would had faced this West Indies cricket team then they would have gone all out for 25 runs. or would had lost the match with one innings.

Talk about a minefield. Ball constantly taking off like crazy from length and seaming with every delivery. Pretty much impossible to bat on. Recall watching this live as a kid and being embarrassed by India's failure to chase a paltry score of 120. Watching these highlights today though....I can at least understand why it happened.

For all Indians worst defeat in years similar to Pak loss in 99 these two test matches still gives me sleepless nights feels like as if a part of me playing there even Sachin Tendulkar has mentioned this as a greatest loss in his test career coz it was a golden chance for him as a captain to win a overseas series on W indies tour

Very painful defeat. On a pitch that was getting terrible on each passing day,West Indies was reeling at 95/8 in the 2nd innings with a lead of just 74 runs - and all proper batsmen back in the pavilion. A target of 85-90 would have given lesser pressure and a famous win to India. But the 9th and 10th wicket pair of West Indies - Curtly Ambrose,Franklyn Rose and Mervyn Dillon - added another 45 runs(!!!) on this wicket and took the West Indian 2nd innings total to 140 - setting India a target of 120. and that turned out to be the difference. Lets get this straight. Sachin Tendulkar was a very good captain. But he always captained an ordinary side and was extremely unlucky as well. Now many fans call him bad captain. Unfortunate. In this case,the Indian bowlers failed to finish the job in the 2nd innings and let the match slip away.

I agree entirely, cricket became a lot less interesting for me in the 2000’s. Still never say never!

BCCI should seriously consider bringing Windies Cricket to the Indian television screens with so many channels now showing interest in cricket.

This was a very tricky pitch. I had my doubts if India will be able to score 120 on this even with a very strong batting line up. A couple of friends even made fun of me for saying it. Look at the balls that got Sindh and Azharuddin. Shows the unpredictability of the pitch.

The worst of the pitch they could have made... bloody started crumbling in the end.one ball bouncing over head and other ball bouncing below knee pitching at the same spot...a disgrace pitch.

That pitch was utterly unplayable. I only started following cricket in the early 2000s and nowadays that game would have been abandoned. No wonder batting averages were lower in the 90s than they are today. Imagine Smith, Kholi, Root etc averaging over 50 on these wickets. Impossible to bat on.

India batted much better here than 36 all out.

I know India were bowled out for only 81 chasing 120 but at least 3 of the Indian wickets were taken by balls that were unplayable. No batsman in the world would have stayed in. The pitch was fruity to say the least!! Plus the first wicket was bowled by a No ball !!
