If not for his knee surgery in 1985, he could have acheived more with the ball. Had he curbed his natural instincts he could have easily acheived 40 plus average with the bat.

Kapil Dev is the real fighter. He and srikanth and young Azhar could score quick runs from the shadow of the test matches in this team. 200 - 225 was very good score in those days and if a team could score 250-275 they would surely going to win the match. It was more than 350-360 plus equivalent score compare to today's game. Rules had changed, fitness level had improved, more security measures are in the game now but the emotion of crowd is unchanged. Those was sweet memories.

Not many people know that Kapil was the 1st man to take not only 200 but also 250 wickets in ODIs. From 1988 to 1994, he was the world's leading wicket taker in ODIs, ahead of Botham, Imran, Hadlee, Marshall etc. Kapil is the only captain to take 9 wickets in an innings. Only man to claim 400 wickets and score 5000 runs, also only man to claim 400 wickets and 4000 runs in Tests. (Though Sobers is said to be the greatest all rounder, he managed only 235 wickets in 93 tests at a horrible strike rate of 87 and a poor avg of 34, Sobers also has no 10 wicket hauls and only 6 five wicket hauls. rather close match..so lucky for us to have the incomparable kapil dev!....feel a little down watching that kiran more stumping(....very much his salim yousuf moment....!( earlier that year..yousuf claimed a catch of botham when the ball clearly bounced in front of him...but the umpire was smart then!...).....the Kiwis are gentlemen...did not go to town against this decision!..although martin crowe seemed to linger on his crease ...lol!

He never did justice to his batting. Remained flopped as a batsman in 90s. His contemporaries like Imran and Botham could bat at number 3 or opening slot during the later part of their careers. He on that other hand batted more like a tailender despite being so talented.
