Indian Railways in the steam age: loco sheds Saharanpur and Moradabad

Maintenance of steam locomotives required a large number of staff. Around 1000 people worked at each of the large sheds, not including the drivers and firemen. With the introduction of diesel locomotives many employees lost their jobs. The video scenes were taken at Moradabad (roundhouse, turntable) and Saharanpur (engine yard, coaling facility) in 1994, the last-but-one year of working broad gauge steam.

Film cameras have way better quality than even some of the modern digital ones . Many of the old moves that has survived in negative films can be transformed to 4k or even 8k video with proper work. Although it will take like a month to transform a 2hr film to 8k film.

Upto 1967 we travelled by steam locomotive only 12 coaches used to be there 3 types class. 1 2 and 3rd class First time rly introduced 17 coaches. With diesel engine Though we had so. Much dust and our eyes used to. Have coal dust whenever we peep through windows still it was golden days because of less population travel was very comfortable

Steam locomotives were the most open locomotives. Only boiler was hidden other than that one could see piston, steam, big wheels, hear the magic sound in the silence of night or day and people would know a train is passing by. In short they were magnets attracting people.

This video footage itself is very old from 1994-1995. Steam locomotive trains no longer remain in India except the rare heritage and tourists trains! Steam locomotives were in decline from late 70,s itself in India. Major cities had shunned steam by then. Only small towns and branch lines operated them. Steam broad gauge main line officially ended in 1995 in India but it was more of the few sporadic services which were remaining. Metre Gauge Steam I believe ended in the year 2000.

Main nangaldam passenger se jab Punjab jaata tha to jaise hee train station par aati to toofan sa aa jata tha. Steam hee steam ho jaati sab jagah. Kaya din they wo. Aaj Nangaldam passenger Himachal express hain. Jab naya naya Diesel engine lagna shuru hua to bada khush hua ki ab hum jaldi pohancha karenge. Being Mechanical Engineer, l really miss this Iron horse/ Big brother Steam Locomotive. It is highly pollutant. However, the reciprocating Piston - Crank with Chugging sound with Majestic head light & unique honk are very special to watch. Indian Railways can design CNG boiler for Steam Locomotive to avoid pollution & use Steam Locomotive for houling Tourist trains. Electric back up van can be used for coaches light/AC purposes CNG is clean fuel. We can not see black Smoke but we can enjoy the Steam Locomotive ride.

WP class locomotives - interesting how these were built by a variety of manufacturers from North America and Europe. Thirty of them were built at Fablok Chrzanów, Poland. WP 3024 was the 5000th locomotive assembled since the factory's inception. Sadly, Fablok as a locomotive builder is all gone now.

By 1980 or so most of the steam train locomotives were stopped in India but few services remained. Officially speaking all scheduled steam locomotive trains of broad gauge ended in 1995 and metre gauge in 2000 in India Now only the heritage and few tourist steam locomotive trains remain in India. In UK Germany USA though steam locomotive trains remain in plentiful. Even in Russia and China has a lot of industrial steam locomotive trains working in the mine quarries. UK has even mainline steam locomotive trains plying almost daily somewhere in their country.

I wonder why steam engines have been shunned? The problem was with coal not the steam part. So why not replace the coal with a clean fuel and use steam. The benefits of steam in a large locomotive is the power and tractive effort which is unmatched even by the most powerful electric locomotives.
